  • Provoke - Analyzed

what exactly is Provoke. We all know it is used to get a monster's attention. But how much attention exactly.

    Quesitons:

Does provoke increase in potency the higher one levels with WAR?

    Does CHR affect provoke power?

Is there an equation which shows how much raw damage a provoke is worth? In elaboration, how much damage would one have to do to a monster to equal one provoke?

I don't know specifically, I only have an example.

A blm and I were killing orcs in Yagudo Grotto. I was a thf24/war10 at the time. He'd do ~100 damage to it in a cast, I'd provoke, and it'd stay on him. Could very well be level-based.

me and my pld hommie were hunting tigers in battalia. since theres alot of people, hed use provoke to pull the monster. shorty after,(before the monster can hit him) i hit him with a crit at 203 and it turned to me... usually when he pulled and i hit, i would hit from 90-150 and it would stay on him. i'm guessing provoke has the same hate as a 200 dmg attack, but thats just what i'm guessing.

Provoke is basically getting the hate towards you. It makes the monster attack you because of it's hate. The hate will last longer if you use a great axe for warrior (Well for me it was). Yesterday I was killing Lizards and I was the puller. Since I voked it and whack it with my great axe it seems to get more pissed at me. Then the other war would provoke it to try to get it off of me which is didn't and kept on hitting me for a while till it turned back to the war  When a monster gets mad at a person for doing a move like the white mage 2hour if actived you'll get so much hate that sometime a warrior can't voke it off the whm. So hate is dmg based and ability based imo.

Yes the efficiency of Provoke where it comes to hate-gaining increases as your level does. That is way a tank will normally find it easier to hold hate if he/she is of a higher lvl than the rest of the party.

I'm not -entirely- sure about CHR and provoke, but I believe more CHR = better provoke. Must be a reason why they give us plds such a lot of it. :p

The higher your CHR stat the better the chance the enemy will turn and face you. To use random figures for an example, say Provoke adds +10 hate normally, having CHR+20 would make your provoke +15 hate.

Any idea of the exact ratio of effect for CHR to Provoke, Russ? Is it 2 CHR for 1 "bonus" to Provoke (whatever that is)? It would be consistent with the other stats, but that doesn't mean it actually does work that way.

Ive heard somewhere that job class also affected the hate you could gather (or natural emnity if you will) so i would imagine this would affect it aswell. (I.E. PLDs gain the most hate closely followed by WAR and i believe the lowest was RNG)

this may explain why in the earlier example the thf/war had trouble pulling off the blm.

If anyone knows for sure this isnt true feel free to correct me.

Also the idea of provoke getting stronger with lvl makes perfect since. Imagine if you were lvl 5 and used provoke on a mob and someone did an attack that delt 200 damage odds are that as far as the mob is concerned you just fell off the edge of the earth. But later on at higher lvls you could possible hold the monsters attention without the use of Ritalin.

Afraid not. It would take a lot of precise testing that I'm not ever sure would be possible. You would have to create pretty much the same damage on the same enemy several times while changing your CHR stat which you could probably guess would be insanely difficult. I guess only Square will ever know and seeing as they were reluctant to even release the world worst secret that AGI was the Fuidama multiplier I couldn't see them releasing it anytime soon.

It wouldn't be too hard to test.

You would need a provoker with alot of charisma gear (bard/warrior would be nice) and a caster. Grab a weak mob and provoke it, and then have the caster cast low level dd's against it. Do several runs with and without the +chr gear makeing note of how many casts and how much damage is needed to pull the mob off the provoker.

If charisma does have an effect, it should be very noticable with all the charisma a well equiped bard can have.

CHR doesn't affect how long the enemies stays on you for, that is Enmity, it affects the chance of the enemy facing you after you use provoke.

Maybe it's a lower CHR to get more hate? :/ Fafnir Aegis helm has + emnity and - CHR

I remember reading somewhere on this forum that Provoke effectiveness is linked to max HP of Provoker...?

That's the only consistent thing I can think of, as other possible factors (say, CHR) would result in things like BST/WAR and BRD/WAR having a better Provoke than WAR/x...

...although that would explain Elvaan's high CHR growth.

                            Question for high-level players:
In your experience, does a 50WAR/x have a more effective Provoke than a 50PLD/WAR?

In other words, is Provoke possibly tied to WAR job level?

Charisma can't have anything to do with provoke, because the Warrior class is in now way good at Charisma. I can understand level based, and I'm pretty sure its not weapon based. There is no way to tell if the monster is more angry at you if you already have the hate.
