  • a theifs life

Hi, im fairly new to the game and i am curious as to what a party is like for a theif. Do i just stand there and watch my character auto attack the creature or do i have a serious of moves i cast ect? I realize this is a fairly basic question but it depends on whether or not i buy the game.

At the early levels your job will be simply Damage Dealer, which will be boosted at level 15 when you obtain the job ability Sneak Attack.

Sneak attack: Creates a guaranteed critical attack on your next hit, while you are positioned behind the mob (creature your party is engaged in fighting).

At level 30, then you're role in the party becomes even more important. You gain the job ability Trick Attack.

Trick Attack: Hate (aka Enmity) generated by your next attack will be transfered to the party member standing between you and the mob you attack.

Through the use of both Sneak attack and Trick attack, and coordination from your party members, you can create a Critical Hit that places all the Hate on your parties Tank, allowing your party to flow with a little more ease.

Early on you will be engaged in the Skillchain process in your party.
Skillchain = Two members in the party use Special Attacks (Weapon Skills) in succession to create a combination move known as a Skillchain.

Another important part of playing thief is the use of a Crossbow and Status Bolts.
The proper use of status bolts can help everyone in the party. This comes into play more as being a Thief you will more than likely be called upon to Pull/Fish the mobs for your party to kill. You are the hunter. You track the mobs, attack (preferably with a ranged attack) let the mob chase you back to your party, and begin to kill the mob. It will be important for you to pay attention to how your party is handling the mobs, because it will allow you to make a better decision as to which mobs to pull depending on how they /check to you.

/check is a game function that describes the target mobs Difficulty level relative to your own level, with information such as Mob Evasion and Mob Defense.

Here is the list of status bolts available to Thief.
Blind Bolts = Can Blind the mob decreasing their accuracy
Acid Bolts = Can lower the mob's defense by 12%
Venom Bolts = Can poison the mob
Sleep Bolts = Can put the mob to sleep
Bloody Bolts = Can Drain HP from the mob to restore your Hit Points

I know I haven't covered it all, but it's late and I'm just a bit tired. If you find yourself on Alexander server, look me up, I'll be more than glad to answer any questions you may have, and assist you in your early development.

In short. Never a dull moment for me being Thf (Thief) in a pt (Party). ^^

I hope you have found this information helpful.

    Later,
    Mazon

One quote was not enough. Berserk is much more useful than utsusemi or even very often DW. Yes I admit you need shadows when pulling raptors and things but thats at about level 60, you have a long way to go. Eat attack food too, if you find you can't hit, take a leveling break and farm until you can.

You need to watch when you go /warrior, due to the fact of your own healing in the party. If you do not have very smart mages, then you may not want to take those extra hits while running to the camp site(for your own sake). That may sound weird, but considering that while taking a few hundred damage a hit then not really.

Just saying, you may need /ninja sub occasionally.

            Re: a theifs life

Against most mobs, a decent ranged weapon should give a thf more then enough room to run back to camp without ever being swung at. Though being at camp waiting for that first voke might be a painful few seconds, that's more an issue of a bad partner then a bad sub choice. Plus regen should more then cover any dmg you do take, unless the mob spams AoE, which is again a different story.

Though one thing I would like to add, when you pt in ToAU areas, especially in your 50s, nin sub will be needed to pull. Colibri, despite being some of the easiest EXP mobs in game, *will* tear you apart on pulls. They are FAST, in both movement and attack and will hit you like a truck.

Also, one decidedly sad factor about thf is that our abilities are directly tied to the skill and cooperation level of your party, far more then any other DD. If your pt will not work with you, your dmg output and abilities will suffer. But in a good pt with a good setup you'll be able to do your job far better.
