  • Chest/Locked Door Picking Basics

Who can pick chests and locked doors?
Only Thief as MAIN job can attempt to pick chests and locked doors. They usually pick chests for quests/map purpose, and sometimes to make money.
What devices are used for this purpose?
Thief's Tools, Living Key, and Skeleton Key. First two can be purchased by NPC in a nation not in 1st place in conquest. Skeleton keys must be crafted. It is cheaper to craft the tools depending on your server.
Which is the best tool to use?
They all perform the same. Your main job level will depend on the success rate of the pick.
What is the success rate of picks
All zones have a minimum job level before you can successfully pick them. This varies by zone. Coffers require a much higher level thief than a chest. Doors do not have a job requirement but the higher level the thief is, the better the chances of opening it.

If you have a specific key for that door or chest in your inventory, the success rate will become 0%.
What is the chances of critical failues
The average chance of critical failure fall between 20% to 25%. It will be higher for a lower level thief (sometimes up to 40%) and lower for an higher level thief (sometimes as low as 15%).
What happens on a critical failure?
On a chest, you will be inflicted with weakness (similar to raise weakness) that can last anywhere from 5 minutes to 5 hours. You will be unable to open another chest until it wears.

On a coffer, a mimic will spawn in its spot. It will almost always start with Death Trap, an move that will cancel Utsusemi, briefly stun you, and cause a severe poison (10 dmg/tick). You have three options: die, perfect dodge/instant warp, or find a way to defeat the mimic. Mimics do not despawn until they are defeated. Mimics have a 100% drop rate of that coffer key. You cannot run away from a mimic due to their draw-in ability, and if you encounter one that another thief spawn, they detect on sound and magic. Mimics have the same level range as the coffer key mobs in that zone.

Doors do not have a known critical failure rate.

A new chest/coffer will spawn within 5 minutes after a critical failure, sometimes in the same location.

    Re: Chest/Locked Door Picking Basics

{Weakened}... you can get Weakened even if you are THF45 trying to open KRT's chest (happened with me using a Skeleton key >.>).

an move that will cancel Utsusemi
while doing my AF coffers or my usual coffer hunting, it never canceled Utsusemi :/
i always see "1 of Sequdaz's shadows absorbs the damage and disappears.".

also, i believe DEX helps in the success of opening the coffer.

What is the chances of critical failues
as a THF67, i never got weakened from opening the coffers using thief tools. only Mimic which is rare to happen to me.

    Coffers to hunt for gil:
Garlage Citadel (spelling?) : Light Gauntlets
    Castle zvahl baileys : Ballad2

noticed after the last update i've been getting more gil than Ballad2 , which i used to get in every coffer i opened...

    edit:
correct me if i'm wrong, Coffer repop 30 minute to 1 hour.

      Re: Chest/Locked Door Picking Basics

Dont start rumors of stats that enhance coffer picking.

Depending on the lvl of the area with the chest you're going to pick, it could be better to use Thief Tools, as they are cheaper. But for higher lvl areas use Skele keys.

And if you get a weakened state from a chest or coffer, it will respawn soon after.
