the way I understand it, I'd imagine the main reason is that it will give even more hate to the main tank, assuming the mob is on him.

but I'm a mage, what would I know?

    Thanks for the sig, Selphiie!!

SA normally needs to be done from behind the monster (it produces a substantial damage boost). it's just now with Hide, you can do it from the front of a monster if certain conditions are met (refer to spider-dan's post).

        Re: Hide + Sneak Attack

I know about the being or not in the hate list part of SATA Hide, but I have a question.

Does it only work that way or can I be in the mob's hate list and then (in the case of sight tracking mobs) SATA + Hide?

I'm thinking about mobs like gobs and orcs that track by sight only (or at least that's how I think they track ). Would it work then, even if I'm already in the hate list?

I believe you'll get a Hide failed message so no (but i'm not 100% certain).

Hmm, I guess I'll have to find out when I get Hide. I'm lvl 37 right now and gotta get the last 2 lvls with PLD before leveling THF (and BLM) so it's gonna take some time.

Does this work on if used on someone in ballista? Its been so long but I remember a thf SA then hiding but I cannot remember if he used WS or a normal hit.
              Thanks Kazuki.

                Re: Hide + Sneak Attack

Yes, it works if you're already on the hate list as long as it's not currently fighting you and you hide where he can't see you. Like run behind the mob, SA+TA and hide, then run behind the tank and unleash your WS and it'll be just like you SATA from behind the mob.

It's Sneak Attack. A stealthy attack, that's why it works from behind because the mob can't see you and doesn't know you're doing the attack. This is why hide works for sight tracking mobs because they dont know you're there so it's a stealthy attack.

Back on topic, has anyone noticed Hide SATAWSs do less than SATAWSs from normal position? Mine always seem to be a couple hundred less.

Where you stand has literally nothing to do with it. If you could only Hide from mobs when you were out of their line of sight, Hide would be almost completely useless when soloing.

To answer the question, whether or not you can Hide from a sight-based mob depends on whether or not they track by scent. Orcs and Mamool Ja track by scent; Goblins and Lamiae don't. So it doesn't matter whether you're in the front, back, or side; if it tracks by scent, you can't Hide, if it doesn't, you can.

There are exceptions to the above, but they aren't really worth discussing, save one: you can't Hide from any mob with a pet.

SA->HIDE->Dancing Edge is nice surprise for people in Ballista. Most dont see it coming and usually die as a result. Keep the delay between each as low as possible... like 1.2 between each.

                        Re: Hide + Sneak Attack

                        A few notes about Hide:

Hide+SaTa can work on anything as long as you are not on the hate list (This was said a few times)

Hide+SaTa is only to allow you better positioning and nothing more, it doesn't affect Dmg. (Or at least as far as I know, if you have mathmatical proof please prove me wrong)

Hide+Sa does work in ballista, apparently players are sight aggro.

Using hide can take you off the hate list of some sight *tracking* (Not sight aggro like beetles and orcs) mobs, allowing you to use the Hide+SaTa trick mid fight.

Hide can work on some undead, as long as you have white HP. The only undead I have trouble hiding from are ghosts, who seem to randomly be able to see through hide. There were times when TW bogys saw right through it but VT ghosts in Eldieme never touched me.

                          Re: Hide + Sneak Attack

Since Hide is along the lines of it, what about the WHM invisible and the Rangers Camoflauge. Since they are both mask sight detection like Hide, would it have the same effect?

                            Re: Hide + Sneak Attack

Invisible, Tonko, Camouflage, and Prism Powders merely grant "invisible" status. Hide is a hate-shedding JA that has a side-effect of "invisible" status; think of it as Super Jump + Camouflage.

                                Yup yup.

                                This is a nifty trick that I didn't learn until 50. ; ;

Wish I had learned it earlier, cuz it would of saved me some trouble with party formations.

For monsters that detect other than sight, there ARE medicines that you can use to assist you with overcoming those detections, but the timing that you would use them in is so crucial it's almost pointless
