lvl 36: think I can solo some Tough mobs?

I'm currently a level 36 THF, at about 5k from capping it off at 37. I'd rather not try and join an exp pt for less than a level, not to mention that my current schedule doesn't really lend itself to seeking and joining exp pties.

I'd read about players soloing Mandies in Yhoator from 35 to 37. But considering how heavily camped that place tends to be, I think I'd rather try the black Mandies in Purgonorgo.

Alraune's in Purgonorgo are level 37 to 40 while Yhoator Mandies are 35 to 37. I plan on doing this as THF/NIN, using +racc gear for Acid/Sleep/Bloody bolts, using the Sleep bolts to set up Sneak Attack, and go heavy on +eva the rest of the time.

Does anyone else have experience soloing Tough mobs around this level range? Could I take on Mandies that are 1 to 4 levels above me? Or am I asking for trouble?

I wouldn't suggest Mandies as a solo target, really. MNK enemies are hell on Utsusemi. But it's entirely possible to solo that last bit of exp. You can probably just kill goblins or Quadav in Rolanberry Fields to get your last level. I've done it from time to time on diffrent jobs (even WHM!)

As a solo thief level 36? No way you'll even dent a Tough before it turns you into a bloody smear.

Only chance of doing this might be using ranged weapons on worms in the early parts of Attohwa Chasm, but with a D rating in marksmanship, that's going to take quite a while too.

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't suggest Tough. Maybe on worms, but as Icemage so astutely pointed out, that's still going to be an uphill battle. (Way to go for readin the thread title, Aelathir :/)

There's always the option of doing something with an exp reward, like Eco Warrior or an Escort quest. Ideal? Not really, but it's something to consider.

Black mandies are MUCH stronger then their Jungle cousins, just something about CoP mobs.

EMs is possibly, DCs and EPs definatly, but Ts might give you a problem. Worms and Jungle mandies *would* be the best Ts ot hunt though. A strong sword+high to capped skill would help MUCH more then a main hande dag. Fast Blade > VB in direct-to-face dmg.

Just get a single party and be done with it.

QFT. You will spend days trying to solo 5k, not to mention the gil you will burn up with Shihei and Status Bolts. Spend 3 hours in an XP Party, it will be a lot less painful.

Thanks for the helpful responses. It probably saved me from a very painful death. I took one of the suggestions, and went out into Rolanberry (a lot shorter trip than either Yhoator or Purgonorgo). Quadavs, Goobues, Goblins and Crawlers were all pretty much EP to DC. I noticed that many DCs just refused to stay slept from my Sleep Bolts. Quite a few mobs would wake up almost immediately after I hit them.

It took me quite a bit of time soloing the 5k or so exp I needed. It probably would have been much faster in a pt. But soloing in this manner was a lot of fun. In contrast, the last few parties I remember doing as THF were very frustrating. So many players either just don't understand how SA and TA alignment work, or they just plain refuse to cooperate.
