  • What sub-class goes best with thieves?

I'm starting a thief and wanted to here some other people's suggestions on what is the best sub-class for one. I'll be using daggers and nothing else and thought dual-wielding them as a ninja would be nice. But, I'm a mithra, and a ranger sub-class would work very nicely stat wise...

    Click me, I'm a sticky!

    Edit:
To be fair, they don't have BLU, COR, or PUP listed on there, and that sticky hasn't taken into account the TP changes that happened recently.

Post 30, the general consensus is /WAR or /NIN for exp. /RNG and /MNK get some use too, but aren't used very often. The TP change made it so daggers give less TP back, and THFs can't abuse the TP floor by using two daggers with as low delay as possible. Although TP gain with /NIN (after dual wield 2) is still faster than without it, not accounting for double attack.

BLU doesn't seem like a very good sub to me. Lack of MP, and the best subbed spell for BLU, cocoon, isn't nearly as useful as utsusemi for soloing/avoiding damage, since THFs evade so much anyway.

PUP isn't too great either... You lose your ability to use ranged weapons so you can call a puppet that is half as strong. Better off using status bolts. You do get a martial arts trait after a while with PUP...but it's higher level than MNK, which gets it at level 1.

COR gives you access to ranged weapon skills and some weak buffs. It's like a m ix between /RNG and /BRD. Only without the bonuses of accuracy bonus, widescan/track, barrage, or paeon, ballad, or anything else you'd sub bard for.

I prefer MNK from 1-30 or so, but that's just based on what I've found to be most effective. /NIN is really great for pulling (makes the healer's jobs easier), but /WAR and /RNG both have a lot to offer too.

EDIT: Fixed above. Why the hell did I say PUP when I meant MNK?

I personally prefer /WAR unless the monster runs faster than you, then /NIN is definetly preffered, and /NIN Soloing EM and up seems to compliment the evasion bonus of a THF, so /NIN solo as well. /WAR however for Berserk, Double Attack and ATK Bonus seems the most optimal to me however and should be used whenever possible.

Personally a THF getting hit once or twice is fine, Regen usually covers that up unless they get a link, however if its like Raptors who are ungodly fast...then yeah shadows up.

          DRG also makes a good sub, but only down fall is the type of mob you're gonna fight. Cause the dmg is a bit better/less misses than with nin, yet doesn't have war's bersek and double attack. Though a plus is for having no tp and you got SATA ready you can just use Jump, which stacks nicely with them. On average, about a TA Dancing Edge w/o using Hide. As for long pulls in areas like Bibiki Bay, Defender is always a good thing when not using nin or in the rare cases when the nin dies and THF = meat shield ex. " (Akashimo) Troupan don't move this'll only hurt for a second [Provoke]. Akashimo provokes the Troupan. Akashimo uses Defender... ect." hehe Though if you got mobs with built in flee i.e. courels, colibra(new areas), nin is a must v.v;

For partying 1-33 sub mnk and use H2H, best dmg with sneak atk combo(You can use war as well but mnk reduced h2h delay). 33+ /nin /war /rng. /nin for long pulls or fast enemys, you get a nice agi boost from nin sub which is good for trick attacks. /war if your pulls are not long or the monster is really slow so you dont get beaten up on the way back, berserk and the str you get from war make you hit for more and do more dmg from ws's, very nice indeed. /rng for same pulling reasons as war but it boosts you agi not str which is still good for trick attacks, it also means greater rnged acc so if you've got xbow lved up you can spam bolts and ws like a man possessed. All good subs. You could probably get away with /mnk past 33 but everyone wants viper bite so its not a paticularly good idea. Hav'nt tried the new expansion jobs as subs so can't comment on those. /nin ftw solo xD unless you high enough to not die with /war

This pretty much sums it up. /mnk is ideal for 1-33 and /war past 33 when you get Viper Bite. /nin is recommended when pulling fast monsters or you will take a beating repeatedly. /nin is also godly for soloing thanks to the amazingly high evasion of thf.

Before SE nerfed the TP floor abuse, /nin and /war were pretty even in normal combat. Now /war has a clear advantage in both TP gain and damage.

when i was lvling thf pre 30 i went /mnk using h2h, between battles i chain boosted, then with the boost+SA and got 70+(around lvl 19) then when i had tp i SA+boost+combo for +100, it worked very well for me, totaly better over war imo, but at 33 when you get viper bite you should realy sub war and use daggers.

Erm... depending on what happens in Sauro Champaign.. I might start playing Thf/Blu...

So far the Sneak Attack Bludgeon alone damage is 350 - 410+ damage...

I can't wait to see what SATA Bludgeon does.

                    Ok... 450 - 475 damage SATA Bludgeons, 430 - 480 damage Claw Cyclones, 400 damage SATA hit.

It's not SATA VB on a skillchain, but it's not to be sneezed at, and vs weak creatures - Claw Cyclone was pushing out 675+ damage...

I wonder how effectively the combo could be used vs Undead or Pots...

Re: What sub-class goes best with thieves?

Mostly, it depends on the situation, but all around i'd pick /NIN.

                      Why?

: Pickup DD will usually suck, so having shadows to keep you alive until they voke your pull is very useful.

: Pickup tanks will usually suck, so having shadows to keep you alive when they don't line up for SATA and you get all the hate for that 500 damage VB is very useful

: Pickup mages will usually suck, so having shadows and evasion to keep a link occupied until it's slept is very useful

                      : Dual Weild looks kickass

                      :

                      Double Post Edited:
Concerning THF/BLU, I know someone who used this, hjust for the high DEX (apperently)

I personally don't recommend it, as all it gives you are a few minor stat bonuses, unless you're casting spells with MP you don't have

Dual Wield looks a lot less kickass when you're not working at potential. But that's just me.

I do agree that /NIN is very nice for those times when you're pulling and the mob hits hard (or often).

stats first, looks second, of course. That's just the icing on the cake.

I felt especially bad for my Elvaan bretheren in those days. Not that the Walahara (or however you spell it) Turban is much of an improvement.

I know at least one person who automatically hates pretty much everyone who still sports the Ohat+SH look. He says they're all assholes.

Ever since he said that, I started to notice he's right =/
