  • Thief or White Mage?

I debating whether to choose between a thief or white mage (to start). I'm not sure whether I prefer thieves over casters. I've been accustumed to thief for a very long time now (D&D, DDO, etc.) If I am to start a thief it would be a mithra thief, and if I'm to start a white mage, a tarutaru of course. Here are some of my questions...

1.) Can Tarutarus' make good thieves, rangers, ninjas, etc.?

2.) Can Mithras' make good casters?

3.) Which build do you prefer?

4.) Can you have two characters on the same server?

You don't have to answer all or even any of these questions. Feedback/Support would do good. Thanks!

    1.) Yes.

    2.) Yes.

3.) Neither. Both are great jobs. WHM is, like any healing class in any MMO, more needed by parties.

4.) Yes, but you don't need to. One character can play all jobs. In fact, it would be more frustrating to try and level two characters at once, although it's not unheard of.

Any race can play any job. Some will be slightly better than others on paper, but really gear and skill both are greater factors in who is the better THF or WHM or BLM or whatever.

Thanks a bunch Aelathir! So that clears all the questions I had with race compatibility. I guess it's up to me now to decide!

What's great about FFXI is that you can try all of the various jobs without having to start your character over from scratch. I mean, when you start a new job, you're level one, but you still have access to the resources you've built up, and you can always switch back to what you were leveling before if you don't like the change.^^

Thats nice. For once I can actually play one character, instead of having a whole library of 'em.

Yep.^^ Just pick the race and appearance that you like the most, because you'll be looking at it for a long time.

Then I guess I should pick a unique or amuzing character. I'm planning on this game lasting me the next good couple years... Which is the great things about MMO's. It's the only game genre that actually improves over time instead of becoming outdated.

The Elvaan do everything with... panache. Attack animations look like they'd hurt. The Mithra do everything very athletically, weapon swings, but have this back hunch (think angry cat) during battle that bugs the crap out of me.

The Galka do everything like professionals, nothing over-emphasized. The Tarutaru are like kids; taking little steps and swinging weapons with their entire bodies.

The Humes are totally plain vanilla boringness. Also their butts wiggle unsettlingly when they run.

Pick one that suits you, this game'll keep you occupied for a looooooooong time.
