Re: New to the game, and I want to play a Thief.....

One thing I've found with low level WAR is that sword is pretty versatile in PT. I always carry one with me(even though I prefer G. Axe at low level) just because 9/10 times I'm asked to use it to start a skill chain.

As for crystals, only EP or greater will drop them. You can get the standard(non crystal) drops from any mob, ranging from too weak to incredibly tough. Also, make sure you get your signet from the gate gaurd if you want crystal drops.

For quests, you should get the strategy guide for FFXI, otherwise you'll be wasting time just trying to figure out how to finish it. ^-^
like everyone said, NIN/WAR is the best way to go :3 i warn you though, i think i've heard that NIN is on the pricey side :\

Re: New to the game, and I want to play a Thief.....

The reason I want to go Thf/Nin, honestly, is for the Dual Wield.

I played a S/S Paladin in Dark Age of Camelot, then a Reaver (also used a Shield), but then I tried an Infiltrator and fell in love with Dual Wield.

I moved on to World of Warcraft and played a Warrior. I tried the whole 2hand thing, but it just wasn't me, so again I went to Dual Wield.

Yes, I know Ninja subbed with ANY class can DW, but the reason I was gonna go Thief is because it reminds me most of my Infiltrator. I'm not worried about giant, massive attacks every 6 seconds. I like constant DPS from fast hits. I know DW in this game works differently then the others, but it's still my aesthetic choice.

And Thiefs, well, the other reason I want to be a Thief is because I beat the original Final Fantasy with a party of 4 thieves once for the hell of it, and just fell in love with the class (And they turned into Ninja's after that, so, it just makes sense!)

And yeah, I heard about Ninjitsu and how when you cast the spell you lose it and have to buy it again or something, but from looking through the list, I think the one I'd use the most is (I think) Utsutsemi:Ichi or something like that, the shadow one. I'll have to research it more, but I knew Ninjas cost a bit of money to play, but it could be worse. I could be a Ranger :x

Not to discourage you, but getting ninja from 1-37 as one of your early jobs is not for the faint of heart. Utsusemi: Ichi and Utsusemi: Ni both cost quite a bit, not just for the scrolls, but on most servers, shihei (the tool you need to cast Utsusemi) runs around 7-11K per stack of 99. This isn't even touching the other ninjutsu which you'll be using.

If I had to guesstimate, to play a "reasonable" Ninja from 1-37 on my server would cost upwards of 2 million gil these days, between scrolls, gear, food, and tools, and that price tag can easily spiral way above 3 million+ if you insist on having the best gear and items.

You'll also want to lvl War itself to 37 as well. In this game the ability to change your sub is just like using a piece of equipment. Some items are better suited for certain tasks. For example, when you solo you'd want more Eva gear, but when you PT you'd wanna focus on gear that will help your dmg.

Sub jobs are the same way. In certain situations it's best to use one SJ over another. For things with low def and mediocre eva, Thf/War will do far more Dmg, in both dps and dot,. But on mobs that run fast or have higher eva, Thf/Nin will keep you alive during pulls and give you a better chance to get full Tp.

And as for lvling War with a sword, I can assure you there is a difference between using a Sword and using axes. I started lvling my Elvaan mule from scratch one day and I had her switch between a Sword and a one handed axe. The axe had better Acc and dmg overall. Then when she hit 5 and I whipped out the Gaxe, the skill ups came fast and once again dwarfed the swords Dmg capabilities. And in Pts a Gaxe is the best thing you can use. Shield Break, the Gaxe's first WS, inflicts the mob with a massive Eva down status. Though the direct Dmg may not be that impressive, watching every other melee not miss once for the rest of the fight is. Shield Break at the start of the fight is one of the best WS uses in the dunes.
