  • Questions about weapons and jobs..

Hiya, I'm fairly new to all this, and while browsing around the forums, I've noticed that thieves use daggers and swords? I've been using a shield for my sub-weapon. So, what should I do? Level up my dagger and sword skills? I am completely confused...I dunno, does it just depend on what sub-job you want? In that case, which is the best job to choose after thief?

OH lord, I dunno even what I'm asking anymore.

I know I started with thief, so now what? How can I get the sub job thinger? And what, in your opinion, is the best one? Can anyone give me stats and skills and such? I'm so sorry. :\

Thief are able to equip Dagger, Sword, and Hand-to-hand weapons. And you should try to keep at least 2/3 of them skilled up until you arrive at level 30. But the weapon that Thief has the highest rating in is Dagger. Dagger has an A- rating for Thief whereas Sword is a D rating and Hand-to-hand is an E. For the list of weapon ratings and an explanation on what the ratings mean I would suggest you visit this site: http://www.ausystem.org/~aushacho/gbox/ff/skill-e.html

The Subjob is a quest that can be performed at the earliest at level 18. An NPC (Non-Player-Character) in the Town of Selbina named Isacio will offer you this quest. It entails defeating certain monsters in Valkurm Dunes (The beach area outside Selbina) for rare non-tradable items. These are Crab Apron (Dropped from Clippers), Damselfly Worm (Dropped from Damselflies), and Magicked Skull (Dropped from Ghouls which also appear in other zones but only appear in Valkurm Dunes at night time) These monsters however are impossible for level 18 to defeat alone so you will need a party to defeat them.

Realize that You can still change your main job to whatever you like whenever you want and level it as well. In my opinion you should go back to your Mog House and change your main job to Monk. It is one of the easiest jobs to play in the beginning because the majority of the time all it requires is for you to engage the monster and just watch as your character pummels it to death with your fists. There's no spell casting, and it is not a very macro intensive job. It's 2-hour ability Hundred Fists is one of the most powerful of all the jobs and can make quick work of even Tough monsters in an emergency. On top of that low level Monk equipment is cheaper than for most other jobs. You can even go weapon-less from level 1-10 because your bare hands are already pretty strong. (I would still highly recommend you go buy a decent hand-to-hand weapon from an NPC Merchant though)

Up until level 33 Thief the Combo Weapon Skill will be your strongest attack and Monk subjob is recommended to improve it. How Monk subjob does that is like this: Fistly, it grants you the Martial Arts abilities at level 1 which increases the speed of your attacks while using Hand-to-Hand so you will do more damage over time. Secondly, at level 10 Thief / 5 Monk you will gain the ability to Boost your attacks. This increases your melee attack by a percentage for the next attack round. It can also be stacked multiple times outside of battle to increase your melee attack by a large percentage and perform a stronger first attack. Using Boost before activating the Combo weaponskill makes it even stronger. And once you are level 15 Thief you will gain the ability to Sneak Attack which acts a little similar to Combo except it does not stack and the bonus and the Attack Bonus only applies when you strike the monster from directly behind them. At level 15, Thief/Monk's Sneak Attack + Boost + Combo attack is the strongest attack no contest.

One of the reasons you would not want to use Hand-to-hand weapons after level 33 is that the Weapon ratings (Remember the chart above?) Hand-to-hand although it is very powerful is still an E rated weapon for Thief and will begin to perform less and less admirably in accuracy after level 30. Also at level 33, Dagger weaponskill Viper bite can be obtained and it can also work well with Sneak Attack and will hit much more reliably since Thief has A- rating in Dagger.
