theif job help (request)

i m thinking of sarting over as a theif but i have a few questions:

Should i be a hume or elvaan? (i m leaning towards hume)


Since theives are weaker in early lvl where is the easest place to start lvling? i m geussing sandy


What equipment for lvls 1-30?



Swords or daggers or hand-to-hand?

No i m not new to the game just new to theif (decided to be one cause their so cool) i m coming from my awesome taru taru war or will just start a second content id for my theif.

Well, for 1-15 I would suggest playing thief like you would a ranger...with a bow. I would recomend using h2h because when you get Sneak Attack Combo is the strongest thing you have so having a MNK sub is good till 33. If you wanna level dagger sub NIN and use Fast Blade with sword in your main hand and a dagger in your off hand to level it up.

There is no need to create a new character. Just change your taru into a thief. Besides, elvaan is the worst race for thief.

Can we see some parser logs for non Elvaan THFs outdamaging Elvaan THFs? If they're wearing the same equipment, Elvaan will hit for more, hit for hit, and maybe do less with their SATA WS. After so much DEX and AGI the returns become less, don't you ever see high level THFs wearing STR gear?

Has anyone noticed a connection between Racism and Ignorance?

You can see the +DEX and AGI in my profiles, +27 i believe... im too lazy to look. Anyway i got Dex etude froma BRD to try it out. +35 dex with it, i noticed a 10 damage difference at most, i kid you not. After a certain amount of DEX it really doesnt do much. I'm gonna see if any of teh new items add some STR but where i can keep my DEX. I think STR will help out a lot more now, especially with Shark Bite coming up.

Nice gears Tokitoki^^. I'm trying to work up to what you got now. I've got all of the stuff I can at my level so I'm just gonna frankly pick and choose each peice I can equip to stack on the DEX from here on out. I also agree with what you said, I think DEX/AGI cap out at a certain point(kinda the same principle as returns from ATK/DEF capping out at higher levels). As Elvaan we simply need more DEX/AGI gear to make up for it, whereas Taru/Mithras will be adding more STR equips higher level. I bet there are very few Tarus/Humes/Mithras that could outdamage me at my level, it would just be too random to tell. Maybe after 10+ hrs of parsing you may get a slight difference in dmg compared to other races.

Thanks ^^ I'm planning on upgrading some stuff since my LS is starting to do smaller HNMs. Grace Rings, maybe Amemit +1, and try to find some new +STR equipment.

On the main topic: the biggest thing for lv 30 is Merc Capt Gear. Gives a nice amount of DEX/AGI/STR. Of course Emp and Leaping are always a luxury but they arent necessary at that lv really, though you will need them later.

Hand-to-hand for up to 30, but try to keep dagger lvld as well. You'll want it at/close to cap for lv 33 and viper bite.

Well, I will say that it seems that returns on DEX bonus seems to diminish at about 100 total with bonuses. I still see good returns as I raise AGI though (its at about 102). I have been trading some +DEX stuff for ATK or STR lately for higher damage output. In the end, a Mithra with +STR and +ATK will be a lot closer to "cap" DEX and AGI than any other race with the same equipment. I would say Hume over Elvaan though.

I don't want to turn this into yet another race debate, but the cold fact is that elvaan are at a disadvantage when it comes to thieves. However, it doesn't mean elvaan are always bad thieves.

And no, thieves don't wear +STR equipment unless it comes with other stats or there is nothing better to put in that equipment slot.

Fact is, the difference between mithra and elvaan str at 50 is less than the difference between mithra and elvaan dex.

At 50, an elvaan's maximum melee hit would be about 9 points higher than a mithras, give or take str bonuses. However, a mithra's maximum SATA hit would be 40 points higher. So, it's easy to see that a mithra would be better at hate control, while an elvaan would do about the same damage, but more of it would be melee damage, rather than SATA damage. A parser would likely show that both races at 50 in the same gear would show the elvaan doing about the same, if not more, give or take the 6 accuracy difference between the races.

So to argue about which is better is dumb. The STR of elvaan pretty much covers what they lose in SATA with melee damage.

This is simply not true. Flame rings are a very good example. There are plenty of rings that you can choose from, Thunder, Sniper's, hell I've even seen alot use Breeze and Tiger rings. But most thief's I've seen use either Flame rings or combo of Flame/Sniper, including myself.

Can we stop using the term "racist" when referring to discussions about whether elvaan or mithra are better at thieving? Elvaan and Mithra are not different races, they are different species.
