  • Why the new Hide+SA is useless (with pictures!)

(Note: This message has been crossposted to several forums. Please excuse the screencap aspect ratio; they were taken on a widescreen laptop.)

So with the new patch, we can now Hide and get Yokodama every five minutes, right? Wrong. Squenix has shown an amazing lack of foresight in implementing this patch (if it is indeeed intended to actually provide a boost to THF). There is almost no practical use for it at all.

Here's the test I ran. Fighting against a Crawler (sound-aggro mob) in E.Saruta, I would Steal to create a very small amount of aggro, then another party member (WHM) would cast Banish to secure aggro. I load SA+TA, and attempt Hide.

    http://tinyurl.com/hlbng/hide/clp00017.jpg

As you can see, even against this pathetically low-level mob, Hide fails. I then thought, "Well, maybe if I'm outside of detection range, it'll work." This would be an extremely obtuse way to implement a balance tweak, but whatever. So we hunt down a River Crab (also sound aggro), I Steal, WHM casts Banish, and I run way off in the distance (well outside of radar range), SA+TA, Hide.

    http://tinyurl.com/hlbng/hide/clp00018.jpg

    Once again, failure city.

So WTF is the point of this patch? So we can Yokodama on sight-only mobs? Quick, someone name off how many sight-only mobs are exp'ed on in this game!

As for the usefulness of this patch while soloing... it is even more pointless solo than in party. If the mob hasn't aggroed you yet (and won't), what difference does it make whether you can attack from the front? You can just walk around to the back!

If you are actually fighting the mob, and you try this, one of two things will happen:

    a) Hide fails, which means no SA from the front
    b) Hide is successful, which means (again) you can just walk around to the back

No difference at all. Oh, but now we can SA on elementals and jellies without trying to guess which side is their back! Brilliant!

Clearly, if Squenix intends this change to *actually do something*, they will need to make Hide work any time you don't have aggro. Otherwise, this is a useless footnote.

It's scent that ruins hide, not always sound.
You can hide from skeletons if you don't have top hate or aren't in sound range if you have top hate.

    Try using deodorize potions, too.

Crabs don't detect by scent, and I was WELL out of sound range (2nd pic), nor was I at the top of hate list. Hide still failed.

I dont think this new SATA+Hide combo was made for exp PTs, it was made for HNM...

I dont have pics, but one member of my LS (THF) was doing high damage on Fafnir doing this... and putting the hate on one of the tankers, with HNM you wont get 100%+ TP every minute, so the 5 mins cooldown works just fine.

            This ...
Don't expect hide to always work since it gives you the effect of invisible and not sneak or anything in that way.
Thinking that the new implementation in the patch is useless cause you can't figure out its futile to hide from sound aggroing monsters is just ...
Even to sight only aggros the hide is not 100% and that is kind of obvious.
And i'd say this was just something to even give THF a chance in their "PvP" system since thief can't output any damage at all without sata.
And also to help in soloing a little stronger enemys i'd say.
And it's also very helpfull in times of PTs where you want to sata + ws on the main tank. When the secondary voker cant pull hate off, for an SC to put hate back on the main tank, dissengage fast, load your sata, then hide. and just get ready for the SC
Just make an macro that engages and does WS first thing, and you dont have to take away hate from the main tank and give t othe secondary voker

Some more field reports from Valley of Sorrows:

When our THF attempted Hide+SATA vs. Velociraptors (sound-aggro), it always failed.

When our THF attempted Hide+SATA vs. Perytons (sight-aggro, I believe), he was always successful.

maybe they put it in to help hold the hate on the tanker like say you put your weapons away you SA+TA then you hide walk behinde the tanker and attack.

crabs aggro by sound, track by scent... according to monster DB.

I ran tests last night... using deodorize or deodorizers... I never had a failed Hide... whether they aggro by sight or sound...

Spider..you can easily use this for solo. As I mentioned in the Allakazam forums already that SEX wasn't bringing back any form of Yokodoma anyways. Der. When your farming some mob 40-50 and is farming by alot of other people and you dont have time to sneak attack every one of them. I've only tried with WS but the Hide --> snk --> WS does work (snk hide switch >.>). Eh..just woke sorry if it doesn't make sense.

Don't think this patch was meant to boost solo ability in any way shape or form... if you're soloing and use Hide, can't you just run around behind it and perform Sneak anyways? (that is, provided you disengage autoattack, SA, then Hide) This patch specifically allow you to do a Sneak from the front of the monster - which to me immediately raises a flag saying "hey I can Trick off the main tank while he has aggro."

Besides, Sleep Arrows and now Sleep Bolts allow you to perform that trick anyway.

Hmm, I expected a little more from you Spidey ; Usually your posts/opinions are pretty thorough/well thought out, and I'd assume you'd be a bit more patient in seeing how this change will pan out before making such a bold statement as that.

As for me personally, I have belief in Square/Enix they know what they're doing.

Let's see, XP mobs one would normally fight post level 30 (obviously when THF's get Trick)...

                      Madragos in Khazam
                      Gobbies in Khazam/Gustav/Kuftal
                      Beetles in CN or GC
                      Yags in Castle Oz
                      Orcs in Davoi

Just to name a few. This trick won't work on soung aggro mobs such as:

                      All crawlers in CN
                      Bats in GC
                      Spiders/Anticans in Altepa
                      Fishpeople in SeaSerpentGrotto

So...basically a Yokodama every 5 minutes, which only works on 50%~ of all mobs you're normally gonna be fighting. More if you decide to invest in Deodorize. I for one will take this enchancement and use it whenever I can.

I've never even heard of people seriously xping on Yagudo (the yags in Oz are too bunched up). The only other sight-only mob in that list are Goblins.

So if you use a Deodorizer (or get it cast on you) you can Sneak+Trick+Hide at any angle even on smell tracking monsters? Does this work with Sneak on sound tracking monsters?

If so, then I don't really see any problem with this. Thieves just have to keep a stack of Deodorizers and Silent Oil (? Whatever the sneak item is) with them, or have the mages cast it on them. Seems fine to me =)

Also, this would make the Deodorize spell (and item) more useful. I heard once that there is almost no reason ever to use those. Well, this sure seems like a reason to me. =P

I wasn't having problems using Hide on sound aggro mobs.

                              (Skeles for instance)

The only thing that was killing Hide for me was scent trackers.
