  • So suppose I *wanted* a mimic to pop...

I'm tired of hunting in beadeaux for my coffer key, 25,000 xp there and counting, and now I'm nearly 59 and no cyclas as yet.

So...from what I've read, mimics are 100% key drop rate, yes? I'm assuming they're not any tougher (or more likely, not as tough as) the ordinary mobs that drop the key, or else mimics would be owning thieves before they could even fire off perfect dodge.

So if I want to spawn a mimic...what's the best bet? I mean, could I take a 35 thf or something and be pretty much guaranteed that they would fail to open the coffer and spawn a mimic? That would almost seem....too easy, for getting keys.

I appreciate any information you can give.

Mimics are rough. Be prepared for a tough battle. I've never killed one, but yes. They are very bad. We thieves can barely get a p-dodge/warp out before we're under half-life.
I've never killed a mimic so I wouldn't know about the 100% key drop, however I too have heard of this.
I think SE thought of what you're thinking, until recently every coffer I failed to open turned mimic, but now it's about 50/50 mimic/weakness. (may differ by area)
If you're going to try to take down a mimic, you will need a full party. And they will need to be prepared to die, if things go bad.
Mimic's hold you in, there is no escaping from them, you can't even Flee away. For Limit 60 quest, I had 2 other people with me in Monasticav, I saw a coffer, and they wanted me to open it so we could get some gil. I failed, and it was a Mimic, I managed to P-dodge/Warp, but they both were slain. After the thf dies, it won't stop until everyone else in the party is dead.

Well, at this point, I think it's safe to say that we're willing to die for a chance at a "free" key. Now, it's hardly gospel, but there's a post on allakhazam under the listing for Mimics which says a level 72 thf and the poster (doesn't mention their job) were able to kill a mimic with "relative ease." They were hunting for the poster's coffer key, and the thf decided to just open the coffer.

Now, three jobs need coffers from castle zvahl.

      1) Warrior
      2) Bard
      3) Thief

Assuming the poster wasn't playing say, their whm job and trying to get a coffer key for one of the above three...well, none of those three jobs offer any heavy healing capability, which implies that a 72 thf can more or less solo an AF coffer mimic.

If that's the case, a full PT of 58+ should be able to handle the fight, I'd think. Well, five-person PT, as the assumption would be that we're going to have one of the members go low-level thf (probably the bard) and purposely try to get a mimic to pop (fat chance he could actually pop the coffer, his thf job is all of level 30).

It's probably worth a shot...thanks for the reply, I'll be checking this thread with great interest to see if this is feasible. For many coffers, finding them is harder than getting the key, and so getting a PT capable of killing a mimic to the coffer would be an issue. In Beadeaux, however, finding the coffer is laughably easy.

Well....If a PT of 60+ can take it then...der go camp 6 of the 8 spots in Oztroja and your set. If shit hit's the fan, use 2hr and wait for the others.

Depending on the thf's available subjob and if 2hr is ready have him use perfect dodge, utsusemi, blink, etc before opening the coffer.

i saw a japanese coffer party doing this, the thief opening the coffer was in af so i'm guessing he got the mimic from using the cheapest key / lock pick / whatever. which they proceded to kill.

aye, you could have any level thf do it, coffer spawns are at about 30 minute intervals, If he happens to open it sucessfully, Oh shucks... you all get gil ><. I think a 60 thf using "The cheapest lock picks" (thief tool) would have a fairly high failure rate.

what he said ^^ (the post directly before this)
Thieves tools have the lowest sucess rate, and are cheapest to buy.
Living Keys are midrange (I use these for most of my pickings)
Skeleton keys are high end, higher sucess, more expensive
