For parties, you'll probably want to be a Thief/Warrior or Thief/Ninja. You can read the ongoing debate here.

Thf/Rng wouldn't hurt for farming, no.

I'm thinking unless you're extremely blessed, you should go thf/whm until you get sneak attack (solo),

then go with thf/mnk and use sneak attack + combo
      (hand to hand weapon skill)..

but keep a sword on you
in case you get into a good group
that wants you to do distortion
      with sneak + fast blade.
I made that mistake yesterday and
no sword was found on me.

ok i got alot of info on the NIN side... what about ranger??? i really dont want to be a WAR... i was a tank for 4 years on EQ i want to try somthing diffrent. i like the idea of a ranger but is that a viable option with THF?

Long answer: you're a beautiful butterfly, unique as a snowflake and free to choose any job/subjob combination you want. That being said, you don't see many thf/rng's looking for a group (read: none), but don't let that stand in your path, strike out, be unique, set a trend by soloing to 75 =P

          Short answer: no.

I'm currently leveling thf using a rng as sub, currently level 22 thf/rng.

I did it just to try it out more than anything. So far, I've done great damage in parties. I use sneak attack then use sharpshot ability to inflict pretty damn good damage using self bow and beetle arrows. I am also pretty accurate when sharpshot is unavailable, (5 min recharge). Often when pulling IT mobs, I hit them with bow on pulling shot.

I use two bone rings +1 for the ranged acc. Thf/rng also enabled me to team up with one or two other members in Korroloka tunnel to get past the dreaded 15-20 levels that are close to impossible in the dunes to level easily.

In my opinion try thf/rng out, far too many people rely purely on forum messages instead of just doing what they want. I've had no problem getting into parties and they like the damage I do.

                Guess what?

you'll be tanking as a WAR.

you'll be tanking as a NIN.

you'll be tanking as a MNK. (if you're good)

NIN and WAR tank differently though, NIN is more costly.. initial cost of NIN Utsusemi quest is in the area of 60k+. WAR is by far cheaper but NIN is very useful as you will find out when playing NIN main.

Well In my opinion Ranger or ninja are good subs just depends.. both offer good damage propisitions but of course ranger will cost you more. But ninja would be the best choice in my opinion because of dual wield first off..... and secondly because of the ninjitzu scrolls which will allow you to help tank aswell.

ok if your really want to be a thf/rng go for it you will get tp just as fast as thf/nin and there for your pt can really get pissed cuz it takes to lone to charge you viper bite. 2 they both cast a lot in arrows and ninja powders. level your ranger useing a crossbow and then you can buy a gun but ya i think thf/rng is a good combo try new things and puls to many f#cking thf/nins

                            both can be really good.
thf/nins get blink so save their ass. good for pulling. and they get some lower level ninjitsus like hojo ichi which is pretty good. and their stealth with tonko will be incredible. they also get tp faster than thf/rngs too. they can sneak+trick+vb or de or sb.

thf/rngs are good for hunting nms since they have widescan. at higher levels they are insane in damage too. once u get a good bow and arrows and get ws like slugshot or sidwinder u will do like 1500+ damage. too bad u cant combine it with sneak and trick though. but doing such high damage and all u have to do is just use trick and lose all that hate.

so i have to say both are good combos. although a thf/rng path should be harder than a thf/nin since u have to level ur bow/gun witch takes quite some time. and u need to spend alot of money on arrows/bullets maybe more than powders than nins.

Outside of exp parties, THF/RNG is one of the best combos in the game.

Inside of exp parties, it has clear disadvantages compared to /WAR and /NIN.

The one potential saving grace of /RNG (Slugshot) won't really work, because THF needs to use their TP on SA+TA+WS.
