  • Summoner on the back burner

So, I managed to get SMN to 20, mainly partying in Valkrum as healer but no probs, my SMN skill is capped anyway.

It envied me to see other SMN there pulling out all sorts of Avatars...but I would be 20 soon and I could get my own right!

Wrong. I spent ages gunning for Fame 7 so a so called 75 person could help me get the primes, but then they bailed. Fame is good for life but I wouldnt have rushed it like I did otherwise.

So I think, ok fine Ill do the mini's. Read eveything I could about them by the time I hit 15, watched all the vids I was pretty confident. What I didnt think about was the cost of all the ethers, hipots, crabs, etc. Personally I havent found a reliable way of making money yet. And it worked out 22k for all the stuff I needed from AH in Rabao to fight Garuda.

    2 SL's in and I was dead, 20k gone.

Unable to do the primes becuase the only 75 in the LS bailed and I dont know any others.

So Iv gone back to lvling RDM to 75 first, then SMN can come back out.
So unless you are very rich or know helpful 75's, make sure you take the time to save some cash b4 you start the mini's if thats what you're doing. Otherwise you just get disheartened and burnt out like me

If you don't like a challenge, sadly, SMN may not be for you.

I beat all the mini primes, as I'm sure did a lot of other people here.

I've also beat all the full primes multiple times, including fenrir and diabolos, and just recently beaten the prime+1 alliance fights.

But it's not always easy. I think I only beat ONE avatar my 1st run doing the mini's, and the rest took me between 3 and 7 times to beat. It was obnoxious sometimes, but fun. It was a great challenge and I really felt like I "earned" those avatars, as opposed to getting high level friends to take me with (no offense if you do that, I ended up doing that for my first Diabolos and Fenrir fight since I kept losing otherwise)

But it's not like it gets easier. You'll be expected to play a 2nd rate WHM for most of your career, or stuck duoing with friends or soloing. The gear you'll "need" will come from super tough HNM's or rare drops from alliance battles.

    SMN can get real tough.

But that's not to say it's not rewarding. I have a GREAT time playing it, always did. I was up for the challenge. And when you get to 75 people will love you for God fights, dynamis runs, Promyvions bosses, etc. You'll be a great addition. But at times, the road will feel quite rocky.

Don't give up if you really want to be a SMN. But if you want something a bit more subtle, and easier to get a party, then definitely go RDM. A lot of people have real good luck with SMN as their second job.

    best,

Its not like I dont want to play it - I do. I loved the job and I still do.

Yes I have accepted the fact that I can always be out and out summoner + avatar DD in battle, but thats the way it is. I dont care.

The thing that is holding me back is I dont yet have a steady source of income, apart from farming (which I dont count as steady as sometimes Ill farm chips or silks and get a low drop rate), and these mini's take a lot of money per fight to even have a chance of winning.

But it does certainly seem you do best at summoner when you have a lot of high level friends. My plan so far is to lvl RDM to 75, and use that job to beat the primes and then start on SMN again.

So yes, maybe SMN will be better suited to me as a second job. Of the mage jobs, RDM, BLM and SMN are planned for 75, WHM to 37.

I am not a SMN, but to be honest, I think most jobs need a steady source of gil income (unless the player does not care...)

Even RDM need gil for spell scrolls or different set of gear to swap in different situations. Some scroll or gear can be expensive or hard to get too.

Yeah, its true, but with SMN mini's Im would rather get all of my avatars in one go rather than here and there - with RDM, my scrolls are not that expensive! I think the most expensive one I have had to buy is Dispel.

And its not often I have to buy spells either. Meh.

If you're struggling to find 20K for an avatar fight, you've got problems coming your way. Elemental Staves cost maybe 200K each on average, and you'll want at least five (Light, Dark, Ice, Earth, Wind) to level RDM. For SMN, you'd want the HQ versions, which are all over 1 million gil each.

I recommend taking up a craft that will earn you some steady cash, such as Fishing or Cooking and build up from there.

Well I am dedicating more time to cooking now, so I am hoping that will be my gil earner in this game.

I have admittedly neglected crafts and such to a point now where I am going to have to spend ages catching up, as I concentrated too much on doing other things!

Re: Summoner on the back burner

When I was low level I took a break from levelling and farm silk for weeks to buy refresh and dispel :O which were both over 100k each at that time.

I wouldn't recommend crafting just yet. All crafting cost quite a lot to get your skill up to be able to make profit. If you're really tight on gil, I suggest just go farm. Kill stuff for drops. Once you have a couple million in your pocket, it will be a better time to craft.
