  • Carbuncle's Ruby ..... HELP!

    I've been trying to get my Ruby solo and I have prob. killed at least 80 poison leeches at Buruburu Peninsula.

    I am a 30lvl Red mage and 13lvl black mage.
    What could I be doing wrong...If I am doing anything wrong ^_^
    I don't play much so I have been trying for 4 weeks.
    Ugghhh!!!
    Help!!

    That's just the way the Ruby is... You can try finding a friend with TH2, but it's still a rare thing.

    As with all things FFXI, patience is the key. The Ruby will find you when you're ready... Summoner is not a good choice for a first Advanced Job anyway. It takes a lot of money and preferably a powerful other job so that you can acquire all of the summons. I suggest you gain a few more levels and instead of hunting poison leeches, go and make some money on the leeches in Passhow that drop Beastman Blood in addition to the Ruby...

      You'll also want to de-gimp your sub and level White Mage. White Mage is the only truly appropriate sub for Summoner.

      Path:

      BLM->18
      WHM->37+

      If you're looking at SMN as a DD, don't... Try BLU instead. Play SMN for what it is--a versatile class. Don't refuse to heal--you won't pack a big enough punch until later to justify your inclusion in a PT without healing.

      Other DDs: MNK, BLM, RNG, SAM, DRK, PUP, THF
      Other Support: RDM, WHM, BRD
      Other Pet: DRG, PUP, BST

        I beg to differ! While a majority of SMN is bitch-healing (don't know if much has changed in light of the recent updates), past 70, summoners become ridiculously overpowered and can deal ungodly amounts of damage. Plus one of the only job classes that can soro.

          I actually mentioned this...albeit very briefly...

          This was for those people who would say that... 70+ a SMN is a great DD. Which, of course, it is, but before that you've got some 70 levels of game to play before you get to be full-time DD--much of which will be spent buffing/damaging and healing. Though with the new setup I'm not sure if SMN will have the time nor the mana to heal. I haven't picked up SMN post-update, but I did just buy my Light Spirit Pact--they were on sale CHEAP... 90k only and they used to be 2mil! It's really quite sad the impact deflation has had on this incredibly useful and hard-to-find BCNM item. It kinda makes me a little bit sick...

          One thing that I'm absolutely sure of is that you definitely...won't be nuking...therefore, BLM sub is worthless (at least until Warp/Escape).

            Since the OP is merely 30, extolling the virtues of SMN DD post 70 isn't really going to help him or her with the 40 difficult levels before then. But totally. Past 70 it's a real DD powerhouse.

              Re: Carbuncle's Ruby ..... HELP!

              I have heard people get the ruby in the 4th leech they killed ad I also have heard people trying for 4 days straight with no success. I just got mine the other day and I wasn't even trying. Whenever I would go out to an area to farm where there were leeches I would kill them and see if something dropped. After a while of this off an on search it finally dropped.

              Also, if you are a level 30 Rdm then maybe you should get some friends to help so that it will be faster.

                I was lucky and got my ruby during a exp party. I have summoner unlocked but haven't done anything with it yet. My main job is whm (which I love) but I also wanted to look into smn and brd as alternative sub jobs besides blm.

                  Re: Carbuncle's Ruby ..... HELP!

                  I did what the OP did and farmed Poison Leeches in Buburimu; I also farmed some leeches in Valkurm, Zeruhn, and Passhow. The Passhow leeches are harder to get since they're camped rather heavily--I ended up back in Buburimu after I gained a few RDM levels (probably 35ish) and soloed leeches until they dropped the ruby. I killed probably 150 or so leeches (in between other things) over a period of about 2 weeks to get my ruby.

                    This is what I was going to suggest. At 30 you can handle them on your own, so getting a little bit of help would let you take on 2 or more leeches at the same time increasing your chances of getting it to drop quickly.

                    I got the ruby solo at around 38RDM in 9 or so kills, came back with a friend a few days later and it took us a few hours to get it to drop. It's just the way things are.

                      My rank is also rather low, But this should make no difference at all right?

                        Rank makes no difference--unless you consider the travel time/expense associated with Teleportation vs. Airship.

                          No Rank makes no difference at all in droprates.
                          However there are a for things that do influence it.

                          Try farming during Full moon, for example rare things have a higher chance of dropping including Carbuncle Rubies.

                          Also if you have a 45+ thief friend try and trick him into helping you farm.

                          For the rest it's having patience, a friend helped me get it and we ended up farming Leeches for around 4 hours in Maze of Shakrami.

                            Which also doesn't matter since Teleport-Mea > Chocobo will get you to Buburimu faster then Airship to Windurst > Chocobo will thought the latter would be cheaper.

                            If you want help but don't have too many friends to help, you can try asking in your servers forum. Personally I like helping people like this when I'm bored but don't feel like finding something else to do.

                              Re: Carbuncle's Ruby ..... HELP!

                              My advice would be to wait awhile before you go ahead and lvl your SMN.

                              Feel free to unlock it however, either continue to solo leeches, get some friends to help, or lvl THF and solo them with that instead. But once the job itself is unlocked I wouldnt advice getting into it.

                              You see, each of the 6 main avatars (Fenrir and Diabolos excluded at the moment) require you to have certain fame in each nation. If you don't have any fame at the moment (which you probably don't since you're new to the game), then you can't do any of the avatar battles.

                              As for Fenrir, he is only unlockable if you can do all the other avatars, and Diabolos requires you to progress through the Chains of Promathia storyline.

                              So even if you can unlock SMN, you will be useless in a PT without the other avatars (note that the other avatars aren't really needed till 20+ parties, but you still need fame nonetheless).

                              My advice is to unlock SMN, then do quests in other nations to boost your fame, continue lvling your RDM, unlock and complete avatar prime fights at lvl 55+ with other players (or do SMN solo battles at lvl 20), and then go ahead and lvl SMN (unless you doing the capped battles, in which case you must have it to lvl 20+ already).

                              Here are the Avatars and the fame lvl and nation you need to complete:

                              Garuda: Lvl 7 fame Rabao (San D'oria)
                              * Advised Quest (Merchants Bidding, Only the Best, Afraid of the Dark, Starting a Flame)
                              Shiva: Lvl 6 fame San D'oria
                              * (same as above)
                              Titan: Lvl 6 fame Bastok
                              * Advised Quest (Only the Best)
                              Ramuh: Lvl 7 fame Windurst
                              * Advised Quest (Mandragora Mad, Creepy Crawlies, Paying Lip Service)
                              Ifrit: Lvl 7 fame Kazham (Windurst)
                              * (same as above)
                              Leviathan: Lvl 4 fame Norg (Tenshodo)
                              * (Mihgo's Amigo)
                              Fenrir: (must acquire the whispers from all other avatars, 6 in total)
                              Diabolos: (must defeat him in Chains of Promathia)

                              Hope this helps and good luck
