I've heard that Leviathan's melee is more effective on mobs with high evasion, whereas Ifrit is less effective. I've also heard Fenrir called the best melee avatar, but I can't find any resource with any elaboration on how different avatars perform when left out to melee. Anyone have more information on this?

Re: Melee properties of avatars
I've never seen any definitive proof, but from past conversations, my Summoner friends tell me Fenrir is the most combat-capable avatar in straight melee. From personal observation, Ifrit does seem to be a bit more whiff-prone, more so than other avatars, and he's rarely used by SMNs for that reason unless they have some reason to use Flaming Crush.

Re: Melee properties of avatars
I'm still wondering why summoning skill doesn't seem to affect avatar performance, shouldn't BPs be obtained with summoning skill lvls the same way WS are obtained?
Also, the higher the s.skill, the more powerful and accurate avatars and BP should be.
Or is it that way? My SMN is only lvl 20 and I don't think I'll lvl it anytime soon so I dunno what I'm talking about.sigpic

Re: Melee properties of avatars
SE said they'll make it that way. Let's see the October patch. There are painters who transform the sun into a yellow spot,
but there are others who with the help of their art and their intelligence
transform a yellow spot into the sun.

That's really depending on avatar Accuracy items and merits.
on Lower then VT Ifrit has pretty good accuracy, I use Flaming crush a lot on Hpemde.
I dish out a consistant 2k+ with 4/5k spikes with flaming crush on those.
Also when fighting Treants and Crush lands good the added fire effect gives pretty nice damage.
In my opinion for regular melee Fenrir is the best, has the most consistent damage output and accuracy.
Next to that he's the cheapest avatar to use next to carbuncle.
I use Fenrir for farming, I can pull a Sneak attack spirit taker to get back lost MP without pulling hate off him.Last edited by Shirai; 10-05-2006, 03:57 PM.Quetzalcoatl Server | WHM 80 | SMN 76 | NIN 75

As far as which Avatar has the greatest Acc, we haven't tested that. If we ever need a long turn tank, Carbuncle's always comes through for us. Seems to have the most survivability when duoing for EXP or NMs.Odude

You can also test it out with the one hitter from Titan (Mountain buster).
With those one-hitters it's either hit or miss.
Other level 70 BP's are all multi-hitters and depend on how many of the hits land on damage, which can range from really crappy damage from only one out of them landing to extremely high damage from all hits landing.
As for Carbuncle holding out so long on EP, he has Auto-Regen.
Which makes Carby a good avatar to kite with or hold off agro long enough for you to get far away.
As for real tanking purposes I rather use fenny because it's a lot harder to steal hate from him when I melee myself.Quetzalcoatl Server | WHM 80 | SMN 76 | NIN 75

Re: Melee properties of avatars
That's interesting.. because when I was in GC recently (btw if you remember me from my gear thread, and are curious, I'm 52 now ;3 ) and I was using Ifrit on beetles down there, and he was bearly hitting including BP's, so we also had another SMN, who was using leviathan, and told me something about 2 hit BP's but w/e, so I used Leviathan too and he was hitting MUCH more frequently. So you may have something there~

Re: Melee properties of avatars
Leviathan has a naturally higher accuracy in melee than most avatars. Supposidly each avatar has a special trait to their level 70 blood pacts, such as Leviathan's ability to penetrate armor.
In all my experience, Leviathan has always been the most accurate. Well atleast vs. Garuda.
Garuda has always been the one with max damage.
Titan has always been best vs. skeletons and arcana pots.
I havn't had too much experience fighting out in Aht Urhgan.
But most of my info has been from http://www.summoner.info (not sure if that site still works or not.) As well as personal experience.
Dynamis mobs still eat it quick to Garuda. I think Accuracy merits really help. I have 4 in phy. acc. merits.Hacked on 9/9/09

Re: Melee properties of avatars
Hiya ^^
I get to DD alot as SMN and I've been testing the diffrent Avatar's and there Magic and Melee attacks,
I find that Fenrir is best for pure Melee DD and can keep a good constant damage number,
Leviathans physical bloodpacts are the best for DD with BP's
Magic wise I would use Shiva or Garuda as they seem to keep up the damage
I'm lv 54 and on IT mobs Blizzard II has a Min att of 200 and max ive seen is 320 and max burst I've seen is 700,
With Shiva's Double Slap on IT does around 250 - 360
I will be compareing all data I collcted and make a post about it now ^^
