    Re: Summoner/Red Mage

*sigh* You can sub any mage job you want to for summoner. Play what suits you as long as you're cool with it and you have fun. People just say sub whm because you'll be invited as a main healer a lot, but that doesn't mean you won't be invited as a real summoner. If it is taking a long time to get an invite, make your own party with a whm and you'll be fine. Mages have their pros and cons, but play what you like. It's just other people prefer you to play the BEST of something to make you have the best results of the job possible. We all don't want to be TOO MUCH alike. It wouldn't be as fun if you saw the same combination of a main/sub job everywhere. So, good luck with whatever you picked.

P.S. Just don't sub a non-mage job for summoner. I know it's obvious, but I just don't want you to think I was talking about sub ANY job for summoner. I meant sub any mage job you wish to sub.

Aaliyah is more than a woman and she graduated with a 4.0 GPA (she only had 1 "C" grade ever in her life).

I bolded and underlined the "is" just for you, Malacite.

      Anyhow.

      I'll stop rambling.

EDIT: I would like to point out specificly that 1/2 of my time as SMN/WHM isn't need is still /whm because it what is most likely to be useful for the party. Just becaues /blm works sometimes and I'm patient enfough to form my own parties to make it work doesn't mean I will sacrifice the good of the group. As Hamlet said - the party comes first. Not my own desire to crank out a little more DD.
Yes, I'm more inclined to listen to you. Or really anyone who bothers to explain their point in a reasonable fashion.

I have no doubts that SMN/BLM has some situational use. If there is one thing I've learned in this game, it's that there are a lot of different job combos that work at a lot of different times. What I consider gimpy is not having the option to sub what is best for your party at the time. Insisting on subbing one thing, especially when it's an unconventional and highly situational sub is gimpy. And I'm not afraid to tell someone that. I'd never just say "Your <job> is gimp" in game to someone I saw with an odd job combo, but if someone is going to spew a bunch of nonsense about how they don't care about anyone else, and they are going to sub what they want? I don't mind saying it then.

        Re: Summoner/Red Mage

slow invites? then why in 5 weeks i got level 57?
thats why i have every job levels to 20-40 exept whm is level 1 and als o dark knight is level 1.
        Quite frankly I'm amazed.

To answer your question about how you got 57, here's my guess:

You were lucky, you play alot, and you subbed rdm for alot of your parties where you were invited as main healer and ended up hurting the party when you main healed.

I've been in two parties with a smn where he/she was invited to DD.

I agree that /blm could be situationally useful (if there's already a whm and a rdm/whm or blm/whm in the party), but I'll be surprised if you make it to 70 without lvling whm. Not so much surprised that you could do it, but surprised at your stubborness for not lvling the most useful sub for your job.

btw, I had rdm with /blm subbed for most of my way through 60. I used /bard alot (back before I even knew of anyone else that did it, a long time ago, before it was even considered acceptable. Many people on message boards called me gimp, but every mage in my parties went nuts for me and I was even pretty well known on Midgar for awhile for being the rdm/bard, or as one blm put it, the "best mana battery I've ever seen!"). I even tried out /nin for dual wielding and the elemental enfeebs (this obviously doesn't work), so I'm not a cookie-cutter fanatic. Once I lvled /whm, however, after hearing really good things, I barely ever use /blm anymore. The status removal tools are really awesome (and they get more important the higher you lvl).

          Re: Summoner/Red Mage

/whm is more for the independence than anything. The main reason i can't let go of whm sub is erase and free sneak/invis. my light spirit has the only other spells i'd need.
subbing blackmage really doesn't do much of anything but give you a free warp home and the ability to tractor a few dead bodies. The higher your level, the less the chance that your /blm spells will land full strength. If you want black magic spells you can get the exact equivalent for your level by throwing out a spirit. For farming of course always sub thf mainly for 300-700 spirit takers.

Actually, it USED to be possible, before elemental staves. I was already a 65+ RDM when the elemental staves came out, and it was several more months before everybody had a full set and they were expected. At that point in time, when the only options for weapons were a sword or a +MND +INT wand, people really didn't care if you meleed in PTs, so long as you still tossed out all your enfeebles and kept your refresh chain moving.

Good luck trying to do it after 51 now though. You'd get a whole lot of "Hey, you know, your paralyze would stick a lot better if you'd use an ice staff instead of a sword..."

I think the person who started this thread has more than enough information now.

I was at the same lvl when the staves came out, and like you said it was awhile before most mages had anything more than a dark staff.

By that time I was firmly anchored backline casting with a wand, however. Even though wands don't help as much as staves, I saw the difference more worthwhile than my meleeing.
