    Re: Galkas!? Double-u tee eff!?

Well, one of the most famous SMNs on Diabolos is Finathlon, so I know Galka SMNs can do just fine. The thing to realize is that while Taru may be way easier to level up with our obscene mp pools, we can't take a punch to save our skins. You'll see that a lot later on, (they don't call it 'Die'namis for nothing). Galkas tend to be the only SMNs still standing after a few nasty AOEs. You also have the option of meleeing and skillchaining with your avatar more than Tarutarus do. Finathlon's strategy for ENM60 in Movalpolos includes using a staff + Double Slap skillchain... I don't dare try that on Taru, I'd be face down before Shiva landed the first hit.

I wish I could say this was true 100% of the time. But pre-Lv.30 people are going to look at the Race and Rank much more often.

      Which would you pick?

      Galka SMN/WHM or WHM/BLM @ Lv.20 who's Rank 1 or 2
      Hume SMN/WHM or WHM/BLM @ Lv.20 who's Rank 7-10

You're going to realize that the Hume has more MP, will ~most likely~ have more gil to blow on lots of HQ items, and may even have MP Merits to add to their MP Pool. Galka's more than likely going to be on their main job, going through the Dunes for the second time, and will not have tons of HQ MP items. It's not right, but let's face, most people will select that Hume over the Galka. Of course this could also be that the Galka switched their allegiance and could very well be the more experienced player. But people are going to be looking at these things. Make sure you use /search comments to help you stand out.

Of course if the Galka's the only one that level range, then there's no question about, but at before Lv.30 people will pay more attention to race. Last party I built I didn't know the BLM was a Galka until we all gathered to Teleport. I just don't pay attention to the race any more.

I never look at race when inviting people to my parties. But then again, I'm not just anybody.

No you aren't. You're the son of Maat.

Although you do bring up a point, hardly anyone actually looks at race, people will remember you for it in the future.

I can't remember the last time i actually used character race to chose who to invite to my party. Actually when i make parties i like galkas for some reason. Usually people who chose to play galka as a mage play it well and don't have problems. I also really don't bother with rank unless its rank1 I just prepare myself to explain things if they or a new player. Many times rank 1 or 2 people in my parties just switched nations though.

              Re: Galkas!? Double-u tee eff!?

Perhaps if you are going to level Galka as a mage, you could start out as a Black Mage? Granted, BLM is not as good as a sub for Summoner, but you might have an easier time climbing the levels as a Black Mage, as your MP is not necessarily used for keeping the party alive. A bonus of having little MP is that you will very rarely cross the hate line with your nukes because you will not be casting many.

Anyway, back to my point, if you level Black Mage first, you can amass a bit of gil for yourself to grab a bit of MP + gear before you start leveling WHM as your sub and also SMN. As a general rule, if you're going to level a mage job, you're usually going to want to level all the mage jobs to at least sub-job level (37) because all of them can make good combinations in given situations.

I'm not sure if using BLM appeals to you at all, but it's something to consider if you're looking to level a Galka mage, it might make your life a little bit easier.

And I didn't mention using RDM because it's all too often that RDMs get asked to main heal in the lower levels, and that might limit you somewhat. With BLM, you get the MP pool to draw from but do not necessarily *need* MP all the time in an experience party to contribute.

I really appreciate all these responses and it's made me realize that this decision is a rather tough one, though it should be simple. I'm anxious to play the game, and I'll be sure to let you all know of my decision once it's been made. Expect to have it around Thursday

                Take it easy folks.

                  Re: Galkas!? Double-u tee eff!?

If you really want to play as a galka that can cast some spells, why not try Dark Knight? I mean think about it. You would do awesome damage, and you can cast spells yet at the same time you don't need to be totally dependent on mp. But really it does me proud to see a galka mage on a high level, or any level for that matter because I know how hard they tried to get to where they are, and galkas alone are pretty rare on my server. Saw a galka redmage level 75 yesterday and I was like wow it must've taken him a long time and he must have put in a ton of effort into getting there. So I say, be who you want and do what you want ^^.

Another thing to note: when you go into the game and already have an idea of what you want to do, chances are that you really are going to change your goals, and significantly too, as you try out other jobs. I had no intention of being a mage at all going into the game, so i started out as monk. I got to 30 and still leveled no mage jobs. I remembered how much I used to hate casting spells on my earlier character from about 2 years ago, so I avoided it... but then someone really reccomended that I try summoner. So I tried it and I got addicted, so addicted that i neglected to level up summoning magic skill up until level 9 ( at that point i leveled it up 22 levels @_@ not cool!) and now I am leveling whm to sub smn and I want to try to get the avatars at level 20. Going to go do a bc20 for astral ring too. I guess my point is, don't be so narrow-minded, like i was. Try things out and see what suits you the best ^^

                    Re: Galkas!? Double-u tee eff!?

                    Not sure about SMN, but do you really need Astral Rings for Galka WHM? ^_^;

When just starting to party at Lv.11, total MP pool to last though a battle is a concern, and a pie would go a long way to help with that. I'd just level cooking to 30, and pack 8 stack of pineapples and 4 stacks of water crystals, and a stack of pies before heading to Dunes. You'll be able to burn more MP than 90% of Taru WHM's out there. (Make sure you have a Pilgrim's Wand as well.)

When your MP pool is large enough, switch to ginger cookies, but keep packing the juice materials. Around Lv.21, you'll get the mighty spell Regen, and can breath a lot easier.

By the time you start leveling SMN, hopefully you'll have the funds to get some MP+ gear. Maybe you can get WHM up to Lv.40 for some BCNM40's to fill up your wallet first? lol.

leaving no trace in the water.

Something else to keep in mind, you don't have to pick just one. Spend an extra $1/mo and make one of each. You can share the gear if you're leveling the same job. Cost of spells and EQ isn't too expensive to start, and it'll give you a better feel to level them up ~15-20 for their strengths/weakness firsthand, as well as give you some hours of staring at your toon to decide which you want to spend more time on.
