Best Strategy For SMN To Kill Toughs

Having used Smn for a short time now, I have had a few people ingame telling me that SMN can kill toughs. This is obviously because of the use of the pets they have.

Okay, now I'm only at level 8 with my SMN, so obviously I can only use Carby as my pet (apart from the elemental ones) until level 20 when I get to do the quests for the others.

So, being level 8, can anyone tell me which mobs I can fight which are tough, and more importantly, which is the best way to get around this without dying, as I'm too scared to try it without any good advice about it.

One idea I have is to get carby to fight the mob alone until it dies, then I can finish it off myself, but I'm not too sure if this will work or not.
Does anyone have any good ideas on this?

Also, I've heard that it's not a good idea to fight anything tough which casts spells. Is this true? If so, what is the reason for it?

Honestly at level 8 you'd be better off just killing tons of DC and EP until you get into the double-digits. And you'd be unlikely to have much luck killing toughs until you get other summons, but I could be wrong on that.

From what I've read, it's less about better summons and more about being able to maintain carby for long amounts of time.

Smns solo things by kiting them. Summon carby, have him assault a mob, then run far far away. Run so far away that Carby's hp bar disappears and then stop. That gives you enough room to resummon. Rinse and repeat. The tough part is learning to avoid aggro over such a large area. Practically anything can be killed this way, but mobs that self-destruct like bombs, dolls, and goblins are preferred.

i had all elemental ones except ifrit, fenrir, and diabols at level 1. just use carby as the others are big mp whore (fenrir costs 15 mp, others take 2mp/tick to start). i had ifrit and fenrir by the time i hit 27.

be careful about using bloodpact moves shortly after pet engages the mob - you will pull hate right off the pet. if you pull hate, you are dead. you have zero defense and few hp, the 2 biggest drawbacks of being a summoner.

at low levels, stick to worms. don't forget to bring juices and tons of echo drops. worms don't melee and if you yank hate from a bloodpact move the worst they can do is cast stone/bind on you.

use juices if you can afford them or craft your own, that way you can keep carby out for longer periods of time

The ones in Konschtat or LaTheine should be ideal for that level. I leveled my BLM and RNG and RDM on them no problem.

Re: The kiting method. That sounds like a really good way to take forever to get exp at level 8. But maybe it's really good practice for later? I can see how that would really come in handy then.

But I found that when i used Yag drinks, i just kept Carby out and just kept fighting mobs with out releasing him.......therefore not skilling up my SMN skills, so i would stick to Orange juice and Apple Juice till you get to around lvl 12.

For low-level, field-squeezing your own Pineapple Juice is the way to go. It only takes 2 pieces of fruit, so that's a lot fewer inventory slots. After level 10 though, Carby will still eat your mana on Pineapple Juice, so switching to Melon (also a 2-piece recipe) is a great change up. Going to Yagudo is not advisable b/c it is a 4-piece recipe and uses a Dark Crystal which is usually kinda expensive.

Has anyone noticed that Grape Juice and Yagudo Potions are in fact "fermented" beverages (e.g. wine) since Dark Crystal = Decay which when one refers to the production of beverage = Fermentation. ^^

Yeah i spend last night lvling up cooking from 20 to 30 so i could make Pineapple Juice, thanks for the advice......And just a tip buy the Pineapples from Kazaam Super Cheap, buy a ton of them so you have enough to last for a while and then just make em as you need em.

Snoll as others suggested worms are great Also think about trying to fight EP>DC>EM mobs in that order, your exp will role in faster than fighting toughs all the time. Its how I level up at low level jobs. just KILL everything that crosses your path no matter the exp and you will level up in no time. I soloed to 15 before I got bored soloing.

Just Remember to Keep and eye on your Summon Magic Skill it is pretty hard to keep it up without standing around forever Spamming Carby or your Spirits.......Someone in my LS gave me a bit of advice when i finished the Flag Quest. That advice was every time you gain a lvl find a place that you won't get aggrod and spam your avatars for about 5 min, sure its five min of just standing there doing nothing but Summoning and Releasing, but it will help out in the long run when get to the dunnes.

Summoning magic skill hasn't been proven to do anything to avatar damage/HP/DEF/etc, so there's no real need to pull your hair out over summoning magic skill at this time. (Unless you use spirits often. Then you'll see their delay between casts go down.) You'll probably go crazy trying to keep it capped, especially after level 50.

As for soloing T's as a level 8... Things that can be done at high(er) levels aren't always worth doing at low levels. Grab a pole type weapon and smack stuff. Have carbuncle fight one, you fight another. Or if it's higher than EP, then team up against that one monster.
