do you have to have smn unlocked in order to get the ability to summon an avatar? or if I did the battle would I have to do it again after smn is unlocked? I'm close to unlocking the job and my ls said they could help me get some avatars. I'd like one for when I start smn.

I didn't get my avatars until after SMN was unlocked, but I'm pretty sure you can do the prime fights before you unlock the SMN job. The key is having the fame to get the quests.

The prime battles are generally for the higher level crowd, I'd say 60+. It's great that your LS is willing to help you get some avatars, but as level 25 BLM, don't expect to be much help, other than a cure or two, if you're not sitting way back out of the way (and if you're not way back out of the way, expect death when the Prime Avatar does it's 2 hr).

If you wanted to do the solo, level 20 battles, you'd have to have SMN unlocked and leveled at least to 18-20 (these I have never done, so I can't give any advice on them).

Don't forget that you need the appropiate fame in order to do either solo avatar battles or prime avatar battles. http://summoner.info is a good place to start in order to find out everything you need to know about avatars, fame, and equipment.
