  • Summoner Sub Jobs.. the finale .. for me at least.

Okay heres the new and LAST thread about Summoner Sub jobs.

While I don't agree with the exclusivity about WHM as the ONRY sub I made this post to get out what I believe is a versatile job. Yet most people are stuck in the /whm thing no matter what.

What I aim to do is to provide you with situations where /whm isnt the best sub, but 1 of the possible subs.

/whm is the all around Utility job and works in many PT and BCNM situations. But lets not forget that not every enemy you fight will Spam AOE attacks and skills.
There are a lot of enemies that have single target attacks where /whm SJ wont help you because that particular -na spell is to high for you.

An example of this it the lizzie. Lizzies bugards and couerls tend to spam single target enfeebles. and require they be removed by the SJ whm or a FULL WHM.
In a BC situation where curega can save the mission or the BC, I agree whole heartily that WHM is the preffered SJ.
Anyone whos done promathia fights can attest to this. The thing abotu Sumoners being a gimp healer never falls on me, because I dont settle to just do that. I've made example posts abotu it before so no need to repeat here.

/rdm is the SJ that "I" used for 1-65 without any issues. I cant say enough what /rdm brings isn't the strongest set of skills but have their uses.
the biggest complaint people have is that they tend to fight crabs and other foes that have self buffs that make them harder to kill.

Theres the targeted cures that /rdm gives that help. There i salso the dia (which actually isnt resisted alot. just because you see 0 damage doesnt mean its not affected.
A quick test is to attack something you know has HIGH Def yet you can solo relatively easily. Do not engage simply cast dia onit once and watch his HP bar a few ticks. And you'll see what I mean.

The other Spell that Lands remarkably well is Dispel. Dispel on crabs and birds and gobs have a VERY low resist rate and lands fairly often. You will be resisted on occasion but not always.

/rdm to many player wont happen but is a good situational SJ. Situations such as SMN PT's or all SMN BCNM/GOD BC's . SMN/BST PT's where the SMN is usually the puller and Final kill on the mons. Solo ENM and Solo fights you where you expect stoneskin to drop fairly quickly. a good example is a SMN soloing on bombs. bombs sometimes will hold hate and attack you before a pet can pop. that phalanx and fast cast trait can save your butt.

/rdm is situational it just happens to be I use it alot for my Situations.

/brd This is unquestionably one of the Best SJ's for Summoners in my oppinion Especially if you have a dedicated healer and no refresher. Let slook at what bard gives minus the inability to equip instruments.

You get the Etudes, paeons and Ballad, also the only Dark resistance outside of items. What good is this you ask?
SMN PT and SMN/BST Pt's where a bst has whm or rdm subbed. Th eability to elimanate uneeded downtime is highly welcome.
When doing Bones in KRT, they spam abilities which can be resisted with the dark Threnody and the MP refresh alogn with juice helps.

If you notice this thread so far hasnt mentioned a "normal/standard" PT set up at all. This is all about the situations I've been involved with or have seen. nothing is speculation on my part.

/blm I have used before in the 3 man crawler BC to steal MP from the bug and then warp home after it. /blm is not a good Sj Imho But you may differ.

If you want more info on my playstyle look at any thing in this section for me.
This is my stance on the Summoner SJ debate. You may not agree but at least have an open mind and try things for yourself, and not let me or anyone else dictate what you shoudl play.

Any questions ask me here and Ill answer soon, incase thigns arent clear enough.

I think a point should be made that /BLU may be a very viable subjob for Summoners. I haven't seen much information on how weak or strong various offensive blue magic spells are when subbed, but the defensive abilities are known to be quite good (such as Healing Breeze being a somewhat more efficient Curaga).

If there is any reason to lvl BRD as a sub for SMN its this. 6 SMN PTs (back when they were cool and people where 'ascared of KRT) with /blm (just incase) and /brd is a highly enjoyable and profitable (in terms of exp) pt for SMN. Watching a Bone die in <5 seconds is quite amussing.

I've been using /BLU for the mini-avatar battles and it's been good so far. I've had mixed results in parties as /BLU and will most likely go back to /WHM fulltime after the avatar fights.

I have also been tempted to sub BLU with my summoner. Once I get to 37 blue i will give it a try and see how it works for endgame.

Re: Summoner Sub Jobs.. the finale .. for me at least.

I've been /whm my whole SMN career. Reading the benefits of /brd and /rdm makes me want to go level both of those jobs to 37 and play around. Thankfully I have a great LS and a great group of friends who would let me go merit/xp as DRG/SMN if I wanted to be that silly (gotta love friends with a great sense of humor!!).

I've only seen SMN/BLM's and the reasoning was always "so I can nuke, and I don't want to heal." That's not enough to make me want to try /blm as a sub (unless I'm solo of course). If I wanted to nuke things to kingdom come I'd go level my BLM.

Thank you for your explanations of both /brd and /rdm as subs and what you can do with them.

Re: Summoner Sub Jobs.. the finale .. for me at least.

Using lizards as an example of SMN/RDM might not be a good idea. :x 3HP a tic poison at level 12 hurts. And it's usually more effecient just to poisona it off right away anyway, even at higher levels.

Anyway, that's not the point of my post.

I don't see /THF mentioned, so I'll talk about it some. It's an incredible solo subjob for SMN after level 66 and spirit taker. Spirit Taker does some damage and that damage is converted into MP, regardless if how much (if any) MP the monster has. It's a physical weapon skill, so it stacks with sneak attack.

Using /THF, high staff skill, a vermillion cloak (at this time, I still don't have yinyang robe), evoker/conjurer's ring, and a pluto's staff; I could farm with no down time at a high speed. It gets even faster if you decide to use cheap attack food like dhalmel stew (3kish at a windurst shop, lasts 3 hours).

During Darkday I could eclipse bite every EP spider in boyahda (where I did like 90% of my farming), thanks to my AF2 body. During that time, I was averaging about 14 spiders killed before they started repopping. (I had boyahda down to a system before I started lagging.) This is even easier now with AF1+1 feet in exsistance. (I still need to get the temenos item before I can get my shoes.)

Sneak attack spirit takers do about 175-300 damage on EPs with an elemental staff. (Numbers vary on what type of monster they are and their level.)

The (obvious) downsides are that you have to use silent oil/prism powder to sneak around, and that you can't cure yourself. I found my HP not to be a problem when fighting spiders...but against some things I prefered /WHM. (Mimics in pso'xja come to mind.) This is also a solo job combination only. I don't suggest it at all for groups, even SMNx6 groups. >_>

Re: Summoner Sub Jobs.. the finale .. for me at least.

                    I agree with most arguements,

I myself have always used whm subjob in solo and party since it is the most useful subjob when it comes to curing status effects etc.
(And we all know 9/10 parties is main healing)

It's handy to have Reraise, most /na spells, Erase and Cures up to Cure III and Curaga II when a nasty AoE hits.
Divine seal comes in handy when one of them nasty Sprinklers decide to cast Flare or Burst upon you unnoticed >.>; (yeah ouch)

Bard sub indeed comes handy with a 6 Summoner group in King ranperre's tomb.
And yes, seeing bones die in <5 seconds is a fun sight.

Threnody spells lower the mob's resistance to elements. All Dark Threnody will do is help land Sleep better, and will be resisted with no instrument and halved singing skill. You're thinking of Dark Carol, which is Lv50. The only Carol /BRD gets, however, is Light Carol at 72... maybe nice to tack on for a Byakko fight or something.

For other spells... Paeon is just about worthless subbed, IMO. As BRD75, Paeon IV+V+Regen only equals Regen III.... Paeon III without an instrument will be just the same as Regen from /WHM. Also, the thing about Ballad is that it takes so long to cast, you could get an extra tick of /healing in for just about the same amount of MP.

The only situation I have really found for /BRD is in an alliance battle where I'm in the BLM PT and there's no BRD already. That way, at least everyone else has an extra 1MP/tick refresh.

RDM I don't like. Less MP, no status cures, and no Curaga. The only thing /RDM has going for it to a SMN is Fast Cast... and having to wait between Blood Pacts kind of negates that anyway (should be able to time it so avatar is out with a couple seconds left on timer). I love BLM/RDM and BRD/RDM. But SMN/RDM? Meh.

I've been looking at what BLU has to offer as a sub... and all I see are offensive spells. BLU is definitely an offensive job. Pollen, Healing Breeze, Metallic Body, and Coccoon are about all you'll get with /BLU. Everything else up to 37 is offensive--and good luck landing them with halved magic skill. I'd put SMN/BLU in the same category as SMN/BLM.

thx for the correction on the Threnody and carols. Dunno how I forgot that duh.

the thing is Rydian you are thinking of SMM/RDM as a 6 man standard PT, Im not using that example. Seeing as how I used to solo ALOT and do bst, smn, BLM, PTs instead of standard , Thats the experience I'm coming from.

People tend to forget that 6 Man " tank, 2x attacker, 3 mages" arent the only types of PT's available. So Subbing whm Onry isnt always a viable thing.
I know alot of people just want exp and will just go along with the "ONLY" SJ for smn. but I dont. Since you are on Ramuh whenever you can just /random search me sometimes. You'll see a fluctuation in my SJ nearly every given moment. depending on what Im doing.

I havent experienced Blu as main yet, and you're right it does seem is Strictly designed to kill something. So It probably wont even get a nod from me.

Also tirrock the /blm thing works good for Doing Sandoria Escort in Eldieme Necropolis ^^ did it last night haha. Escape ftw ^^

Re: Summoner Sub Jobs.. the finale .. for me at least.

I soloed my NPC (or would it be duo?) 50-60 as SMN in Toraimarai Canal. I went /WHM simply for easy-access status cures (paralyze from scorpions; blind, choke, rasp, and ice spikes from skeletons; attack down from bats). My downtime was already pretty bad (~400MP spent per mob), I didn't want to make it worse by having to use Spring Water to rest. I've also grown out of using /BLM for an easy escape route since Teleport-Holla -> Al'Taieu -> Tavnazian Safehold is relatively quick and painless.

In actuality, though, I've given up ever EXPing in a PT with SMN again. I can regain lost EXP faster than it takes to get a PT (I have problems getting PTs as BRD... you can imagine how bad it would be as SMN). I honestly don't like EXPing with SMNs on my other jobs because they are as mediocre of a job slot as you can get (for a traditional party setup) and are easily replaced by another mage job.

When I solo for EXP, I either level off Sprinklers in Ru'Aun Gardens or Om'hpemde in Al'taieu. Both situations are relatively risk-free, so any subjob would work. I just choose /WHM as a precautionary measure (EG: Divine Seal Cure III in case I eat a Firaga III, Poisana in case I get poisoned, Erase in case I take a Mysterious Light, and not to mention keeping Reraise on in case I get R0'd or jumped by an Om'Yovra and die).

Realistically, you could sub /MNK for solo play and if it works for you, then it's a viable sub (hell, you get Dodge, Focus, Chakra, Counter, Subtle Blow, and more HP). Solo play is really all about preference, since the only person being affected is yourself. I just happen to like /WHM the best because of its self-sufficiency.

I agree... I've always said that people should do WHATEVER THEY WANT when it comes to solo play. Want to be a MNK/RNG? Well, I can't see any possible value that /RNG could ever add to MNK, but if you're using it for solo, it clearly isn't affecting anyone besides yourself, so go for it. Want to wear a bunch of STR down gear as a WAR? Hey, if you're solo, knock yourself out.

Ultimately, there are compromises that must be made in any group situation for the good of the group. Hence, PLDs and NINs should sub WAR in a standard exp PT, and 99% of the time in a standard exp PT, I would say that SMNs should sub WHM. All in all, a SMN/WHM brings more to the table for a PT situation than a SMN/Anything else. For all the same reasons that I feel SMNs should sub WHM, when I PT on my RDM, I always sub WHM unless someone asks me to do otherwise. I honestly, truly feel that EVERY mage should have /WHM available and should be willing to use it when asked to do so.

That said, yes, there are other ways to play the game. There are other things to experience. There are plenty of things to try out and do. I suggest that people try things out either by themselves or with a small group of close friends rather than using a "test" during a PT where others are spending their time and gil to try to get as much experience as possible in a limited time frame.

Lastly, if you don't want to heal, anyone, ever... Don't be a mage. Just don't do it. Don't be a WHM. Don't be a RDM. Don't be a SMN. Don't be a BRD. Don't be a BLM. Don't be a BLU. There are a load of other jobs to choose from. Be one of those.

I agree with Shar on most of this, But I know for sure Ill be subbing either war sam rdm to BLu and whm during lower levels of it. 30+ = war, 60+ = sam, solo = rdm
