Will I lose EXP if I die fighting a level 20 avatar?

I want to have a battle with Titan without spending any cash right away so I can learn the enemy and the battleground. I know I will die, but will I lose EXP? Also, is it true I need Bastok fame 3 to fight him?

It's true that you need the fame. As for wether or not you'll lose EXP... I don't know. I did all the Prime fights on my NIN before leveling SMN. --;

Yes you do lose EXP

It's still probably a really good idea to get experience of the battlefield, even with the exp loss. The cloisters are very nice looking (I'm fond of leviathan's, but I'm partial to blue), so you can get the "oh wow, this zone looks nice" thing out of the way on your test run, as well as getting an idea of how to do what people suggest when fighting the avatars solo.

You lose experience if you fight the level 65 battles.

You do NOT lose experience if you die fighting the SOLO level 20 battles.

I died fighting several of the avatars and never lost experience. I know this because I was only 15 points into level 20 and would have lost the level but never did.
