Question About Avatar Items

Alright, I'm rapidly coming up on the level where I can start going on Prime Avatar hunts (once my fame is suitably boosted) and I do have some questions I'd like to ask - first of all, I would like to get all of the Avatars for my summoner from fighting the Primes, so I have them ready when I finally go back and level SMN. But... I also want to be able to get the Garuda's Dagger item that you can choose as a reward for beating Garuda's Prime form. Is it possible to beat an Avatar once and get the ability to summon them, and then beat them again for a choice from the rewards, or would I have to defeat the Mini-Avatar battle to get the Dagger and the ability to summon Garuda?

You can do them both as many times as you want, but only once a day
