  • Which of these sets of jobs can get the avatars first?

Heres my problem, like most people I want to start Summoner with all the avatars other than Fenrir. So this means I have to level another job up first. That isn't much of an issue since I want to play a few other jobs first. However, I want Summoner available for my sub job as soon as I can get it (for soloing, duoing, and other such things. Maybe some parties if it works well). I would love to have all the avatars by the time my Bard hits level 20, but that would mean I have to get my White Mage or Thief to a really high level before I can start Bard. I could settle for leveling my Bard without Summoner to level 50 I guess, but I would like to get it before that.

I could just pay someone to get them for me, or level Summoner to 20 and do the solo quests, but I would really like to get them the hard way. I don't want to just leach off the party to get them either, I want to be a help. My brother always plays with me as well, so the second job in each option is what he is leveling with my job.

So my question is, which of these sets of jobs is the most usefull for an avatar fight earliest. For instance, would White Mage and Red Mage be a big help to the parties at 50, but Bard and Ranger wouldn't be useful untill 55? Keep in mind that I want to be as much of a help as I can be, without having to level really high without Summoner as my sub. ( I know Summoner isn't the best sub for Bard, and that my White Mage can use Black Mage as a sub. But I just want it available, just in case I want to use it.)

Please post what level you think I could fight the avatars at with whatever job set you picked. Also, post what level you think the rest of the party should be (and what jobs) for us to be a help, but still win =) Thanks for any help.

At a bare minimum you will be doing 18-20 levels of black mage, 30 to 37 levels of white mage while making BLM your subjob.
Then you level bard as your main job subbing WHM to at least 60 if you want to get the primes the old way.
If you keep going with BRD/WHM to 75 you would enjoy a high level of desirability in end game content and parties while playing as a BRD. Of course BRD is extremely tedious and not fun for alot of people^^

I would do that route personally if I ever started another character for the sole purpose of hitting highlevel game content quickly and then becoming a SMN with fenrir at level 1.

If you really want to be a summoner, I strongly suggest leveling summoner to 20 and doing the solo quest. A while ago, defeating the primes was the only way to obtain summons, but luckily now there is a way to get summons without getting high level. Leveling a job to even 60 will take a lot longer than you'd expect.

      Good luck

Thanks for the advice guys =) And thanks to everyone that voted in the poll. Any more advice and votes would still be very helpful, since I haven't made up my mind completely yet. But I have sorta decided how to go about this, thanks to the posts and votes so far.

My brother and I talked about this a bunch today, and we decided to go with a mix between everything posted =). We are thinking of leveling our Black Mages to at least 17 and get Warp, then get our mages (White Mage and Red Mage) to level 34 and get Teleport (or whatever level the first ones are). After that we'll decide exactly what to do next. Either level our mages high enough to get the avatars the old way, or just level Summoner to 20 and get them the new way. Maybe even forget about having Summoner leveled for a while and start Bard and Ranger.

Doing it this way will let us level our trade skills more before we start Bard and Ranger, so that we can make all the ammo my brother needs and all the instruments I need. It will also ensure that I never have to level White Mage for my Bard's sub again (if we get them to 37). Then I can have Summoner ready to sub to my Bard or my White Mage if I ever want to, right from the start of Bard, but I don't have to cave on anything if I'm not ready to.

Anyway, as I said, I still haven't decided for sure. We may still skip Summoner for now all together and just level Bard and Ranger, or we might decide to just get our White and Red up to level 60 first. We might even just go unlock Summoner right away and level it to 20 to get the avatars. So any votes and advice is still very helpful.

Thanks =) I figured it would take a long time to get to 60, so I was hoping that maybe White and Red Mage would be helpful to an avatar party at 50. My brother and I weren't really expecting to hit level 60 with any job, let alone White Mage and Red Mage. We figured Bard and Ranger would be the only two we would ever get anywhere near 75 with. But we figured we could get to 50 in 4 or 5 months or something. =l Oh well. We'll try to get White Mage and Red Mage to 60, but if we start getting tired of it, or it's taking to long and we just want to play Bard and Ranger, we'll quit and get the avatars the new way.

=) I have been planning to take Bard to level 75 since about a year before the Japanese launch of the game. I love the idea of Bard, and the strategies behind it. I got to play a little of Bard in the beta, and I liked what I got to see. I really don't think I'll get tired of it like most people seem to. Though that's sorta why I wanted to get the avatars before starting Bard, I wanted to be able to play as a Bard/Summoner some if I start getting tired of Bard/White. Not all the time, just when I think it would be a good idea. (like in a White Mage or /Whm heavy party) That should be enough to keep it interesting between learning new songs =) Plus, I plan to do a bunch of BCNM's, Ballista, and other sorts of non-leveling activities, so I shouldn't get tired of Bard too soon. At least, I hope not.

I'm working on getting my Black Mage up for my White Mage's sub already, and my White Mage is level 15 now. So it shouldn't take to long to get it all ready to sub for my Bard. So I can play as Brd/Whm all the way to 75 if I want. Plus, I doubt I will ever complain about taking the time to get Warp and Teleport =) But I would still like to have Summoner ready for my sub, just in case I want to go goof off and dou with my brother or something, just to take a break from leveling like normal.

I'm planning on just getting Fenrir when my Bard is high enough to beat him (in a party). I doubt Fenrir is a very good avatar to use subbed until you get the Dispelga move of his (at 30-something sub, so somewhere in the 70's I think for my bard).

Anyway, thanks again for all the help. I can't wait to get the avatars, however I end up doing it. I set there watching some Summoner pulling them all out infront of Jeuno for a good 10 minutes today =) I was waiting for my brother to find his Ebisu Card, so I had to be standing there anyway, but still, it was fun =) I think I like Garuda the best, maybe Fenrir though.

I say beat the lv 20 avatars solo so you don't have to go back to beat the avatars 2x if you want to flag fenrir.

beating the lv 65 primes 1x = whispers and you have to trade in the whispers to get the avatar pact.

then beat them once again to get another set of whispers, this time you need to collect all of them and "trade" them to the taru in windurst waters to get the moon bauble

            Then go fight fenrir.

Someone told me that after beating him, you loose the moon bauble and have to once again collect all of the whispers one more time to get another bauble to fight fenrir for the other stuff to include the item needed for evoker's ring.

All in all, if you want "everything" take brd to like 65-70+ or whm to 70+ and get yourself a stead pt to continuously beat up the avatars.
            75/bst, 60/smn, 51/rdm, 46/whm, 40/blm, 37/nin, 37/thf, 37/war, 32/sam, 25/brd, 10/pld, 7/mnk

Ask anyone, the level 20 fights are much harder than 60+ with a good pt.
Belive me I've done them both. Besides if you do the lvl 60+ you'll never do the 20 ones.

If you do the 20 ones you'd still do the 60+ ones for Fenrir. Up to you.

Is this true? Do you lose the Moon Bauble if you lose to Fenrir?

I managed to solo all the avatars with my 75 Ninja (with a little help from some WHMs for Fenrir) *cough*

From my experiances, no way. I've died, been raised, and died like 5 times over on that guy, never lost a thing

The lvl 20 fights are really easy it's just that they require more gill in preparation and require YOU to be skilled enough. Main problem is that you are alone in there...you do something wrong and it's over. In party fighst well you can mess up a bit

And anyways you got to lvl up SMN to 20...if you really want to start playing the job well then just do that ppl are used to inviting SMNs as main healers so no biggie.

It's funny you brought that up. I was just thinking of asking if you can do the level 20 fights after you get the avatars from the prime fights. Since I would like to do both the solo fights and the prime fights, I guess I have to get them solo first.

About the level 60+ fights being the 'hard way' I just meant that it's harder to level a job to 60+ than it is to beat the solo fights (I assume). I've heard the solo fights are really hard (or expensive, maybe both).

Is it possible to win the solo fights without spending a ton of gil? I'm not asking because I want to get them for free, I have no problem spending a ton of gil on the fights if I must, but I figure it will be more of a challenge if I don't use a ton of max-ethers and yagudo drinks. I wouldn't want to win and feel like I just won because I bought my way through it, but I don't mind buying items to make the fights more strategic.

Anyway, thanks for the replies everyone. I'm leaning on doing the solo quests right now, just because they sound like a lot of fun, and I don't want to miss out of playing them. But I do plan on fighting the prime avatars as soon as I can in a party as well, since that sounds really fun too =)

#1. The 6 "main" Avatars are pretty useless to you before level 20. They drain too much MP for you at that level and using just Carbuncle is perfectly fine.

#2. Why would you level up a job you don't even like, just to get the avatars? They added the level 20 battles SPECIFICALLY so that people who want to level up SMN as their main job can do so without getting to level 65+ for the Primes.

#3. Fenrir is out of reach for most SMN, unless they are playing SMN as a second job (and already have a level 70+ job they can use to get Fenrir). If SMN is your first job (which is what you want to do), you won't be getting Fenrir until 70+ anyway.

Well, for number 1, I really had no idea what it's like for a low level Summoner. So I guess it doesn't really matter which way I get the avatars, and the solo quests seem just as cool as the higher level ones. Plus, I can still do the high level fights after getting the avatars from the solo fights. I suppose I might as well get them that way then =)

About number 2, it's not that I don't like the other jobs I listed, in fact, I'm sure I like Bard far more than I like Summoner, it's just that I wasn't planning on leveling them so high before trying other jobs (like Summoner). I love playing my White Mage, and someday I'll get it to 50+ probably, and Bard is the job I plan to take to 75 first. Thief is still fun, since it's my first job, and I like it alot so far. I was just ready for a break from Thief to try some new stuff. My problem was more that I wanted to have Summoner leveled for my White Mage's (and maybe even Bard's) sub, but I had always planned to get the avatars in the party fights. So I had to decide which job set I wanted to level without Summoner, before leveling the other sets too much.

So I don't mind leveling any of those jobs to 60+. I just would like my Summoner leveled before I get them all that high. I could just forget Summoner all together and go with Bard/White to 75, but I really like the idea of at least trying Bard/Summoner before then. (Don't get me wrong though, I plan to use Bard/White 99.9% of the time. I just like trying out other stuff, and Bard/Summoner seems kinda fun, at least for goofing off or something.)

As for number 3, I've always assumed that I wouldn't get Fenrir before I level Summoner. I'm guessing that my Bard will be my first class over level 70, if I ever get one that high. I'd love to unlock Fenrir, but I'm not planning on waiting to get him to level my Summoner. I'll just take him with my Bard when I get that high.

Anyway, thanks for the advice. You all have pretty much decided it for me. The solo quests seem like a lot of fun, and it's still just as cool getting them the other way. So I think I'll just unlock Summoner as soon as I hit 30 with my Thief (maybe after getting White Mage to 37 or something) and level it to 20 for the solo fights. Then I can level my Bard without always wondering what it would be like to be a Bard/Summoner at that level =) Then I can take the high level avatars when I get there, and either collect the wispers to get Fenrir, or get some of the items. (The Garuda dagger is cool =) ) (P.S. Sorry if anything in this post doesn't make sense, my house is full of smoke for some reason and it's giving me a headache. So I haven't really read over my entire post yet.)

Ofcourse it's mostly about skills and also some luck.
With luck I mean if the avatar does his elemental magic on carbuncle it's one hit kill so you don't want to be close when that happends. 2hr on the other hand it's you own fault if you die from it.

Anyway if you don't spend any hi-pts which should be there just in case you can fix every match by using only 1 yagudo drink and two Mulsums. I think that's about 4.5k on my server. Not to dangerous is it?
