  • /smn + Lightstaff = free carbuncle!

    Greetings,

This may be old news, but I just discovered it. I was farming in the marshlands and I usually bring out whatever avatar who's most powerful on whatever day it is. Well it was Lightsday and I had ol Carbuncle trotting around and I looked down at my MP bar and it wasnt dropping. Now I only just bought my lightstaff (had been using dark) and anyway, to shorten this down: With /smn and my lightstaff, I get no MP slip with carbuncle out. Pretty kick ass, thought I would pass it on to those who maybe didnt know. I'm curious to see if the other elemental staves have the same effect on the matching avatar.

It does that no matter the day, Carby and Fenrir are the same upkeep cost. The others are more. /smn, you might want to try the subjob belt for less cost on the other 6 (-2 I think?). Also, HQ staves would reduce cost by -3 instead of -2.

Tikki, I'm not sure how much the perpetuation cost is on Fenrir but I know its higher than Carbuncle. Its lower than the other avatars but not as low as carb.

They are not the same. Tikki, from SMN LV30~35 perpetuation cost for Carby is 4 and Fenrir is 5. At 36, they're the same at 5. from 37~44, carby at 5 and Fenrir at 6.

Carbuncle Mitts can only be worn by a SMN. We are talking Light Staff + /SMN sub! Light day makes the element/avatar of that type stronger, but he stated that it was free on light day.

Now at level 75 with smn sub, carbuncle can't be kept out for free with a normal light staff. Has anyone tried with a HQ version, Apollo Staff? I have 2 mp per tick mp regen, counting the SMN sub's auto refresh.

I want to know if it's worth it to invest 1mil+ on a Apollo Staff.

Are you also using the /smn belt? That might be the difference needed.

I'll get that belt to see if it helps, it's cheaper than a Apollo Staff, even though carby is weak as ****. *sigh* too bad Meteorite is level 55.

I did a field test on this recently because I had a theory that I had shared with a friend. My theory was that /SMN + avatar belt + HQ staff = any avatar free. The theory came about because my friend was considering raising SMN as a SJ for the purpose of blinking tanks during HNM battles. I felt that, with the proper equipment, it would be easier for him to leave Garuda OUT for this rather than resummoning her every minute, thereby wasting several seconds of valuable time that could be spent casting other helpful spells.

I'm a 71 SMN, but I'm also a 75 RDM. I don't have an avatar belt and I only have a couple of HQ staves. I do, however, have a v.cloak, which my friend in question does not have and is not planning to buy in the near future. The discussion was avatar belt + HQ staff. For the purpose of my field test then, I used v.cloak + wind staff - avatar belt and headed to qufim and summoned Garuda.

She cost 2MP every 3 secods. V.cloak+wind staff = HQ wind staff for the purpose of this test. Avatar belt reduces perpetuation cost by 2MP every 3 seconds if you are SJ SMN. Therefore, by my calculations, ANY avatar can be free as SJ SMN with the right setup of gear. In fact, I would be so bold as to say that SJ SMN + HQ Staff + avatar belt + v.cloak would = +1MP every 3 seconds, as we main job SMNs already know from the buncle mitt + v.cloak + apollo staff combination.

Edit: Forgot to mention. For SJ SMN, having Fenrir or buncle out free would require only avatar belt + NQ staff, since their perpetuation costs are a bit lower. I did test this, and without the belt but WITH the pluto/apollo staves and v.cloak, each one cost me 1MP/3sec.

                        free avatars using elem staff

                        In response to Sharmarali's testing:

Watch out for macros that equip Ice/Aquilo's Staff!

For those jobs using /smn to augment their curing/support roles, they'll have to manage how they switch to Light/Apollo's Staff, to minimize the ticks spent with the 'wrong' staff equipped. Light Staff isn't quite as problematic as Ice Staff equipped for Garuda, at least, so a few ticks lost shouldn't hurt much, if the caster ends up being busy for a bit.

is there any way to get a free light spirit?

I imagine it would be incredibly useful for a whm/smn to keep one of those out permanently.

i think this was brought up in another thread, and was quickly disproved. Because the Elementals have such high perp costs, and there are so few "non-smn" -perp items (thinking in terms on Austere's Robe, and AF (v2 and maybe v1), or stackable "refresh" items it's going to be really tough to get the perp cost down to 0.

at 75WHM/37SMN, the Light Spirit costs 10 mp/tick.

                            Auto-Refresh: 1
                            Apollo's Staff: 3
                            Avatar's Belt: 2
Vermy: 1 (or Dalmaca, or the new whm jse body; still 1)

This adds up to 7. You can toss on a RDM's Refresh to keep even. Now, that's just fine and hunky-dorey, if your whm is just gonna stand there and look pretty. You'd need both a rdm and brd to keep the mp comin back, while the whm uses it.

Under certain situation, i can see where this would be feasable, but not for you every-day exp pt.
