A few questions about summoning.

I was just wondering about the magic that a summon gets. I read on gamefaqs.com that summons gain the level 4 of the element in which they are concieved. Then I bought the official strategy guide for FF XI, and it's said nothing about summons having those magics? By level 4 magics, I mean stuff like Fire 4.

Could someone clarify if summons do or do not gain those magic abilities. One more question as well. On average how much damage does a typical attack from a summon do? Aswell as their atral flow abilites. If summons don't do enough damage, I don't want to make a summoner.

Summoner isn't a DMG dealing job, its a support job. I'm 99.9% sure all the element based summons (all of them except Carbuncle, as of now) get the based level magic (ex. lvl 10 Ifrit has Fire, and Shiva has Ice) and then they get a lvl 4 version of magic... at like lvl 40... I think, I'm not sure though... check Sheila's Summoner FAQ that is Pinned to the top of this page, its got everything you'll ever want to know about Summoners.
