It's sort of a rant I have, that the way I see Red Mage played out, is pretty much exactly how a Scholar should be playing, and not a Red Mage.

The people who are used to Red Mage as it is now should take up Scholar and use that as their new main. Hopefully, if what S-E has in mind for Red Mages pans out, the more magey-types don't have to adjust, as they are already playing practically the same job as before.

      But, I digress . . .

Thats pretty much how i feel, i mean RDM should be better at melee cuz thats like kinda what their origninal perpose was (little melee, little magic)

Re: So, who is going to be a Scholar the first day? (Just trying or new main)

BLU came and destroyed what little hope RDMs have of Front-lining. I tried the tests. I had posts and everything. I even had #1 Melee RDM (Hyrist) assisting. But. Yeah. It was fruitless.

So anyone that wants to be a melee RDM: Do your self and everyone on the server a favor and raise BLU.

BLU and SCH seem to be the two extremes of the envisioning of a RDM, to a certain degree.

RDM is, once again, caught in the middle, with Refresh as our only vice.

Too bad none of the jobs I wanna level outside of PLD can use the Joyeuse.

(Dance can, but just as was the case with COR, I'm not going to raise a job I marginally like up to lvl 70 just for the Joyeuse...)

Oh, but SCH can use the Genbu Shield, lol...

I love RDM the way it is.

I think I might like SCH too, reading about it!

At this point, I'm a little confused about what the major differences between the two jobs really are... it seems like SCH gets a few more of the spells from BLM and WHM, but lacks Refresh. I guess I'll wait a bit to find out precisely how it differs from RDM before deciding.

I'm honestly so ready to try dancer when i can get my copy, but I'll probably try it out sometime or other. It usually takes hands-on experience for me to really figure out if I like something or not.

If the spell list posted in the other thread is correct (and complete), I don't see how you can compare SCH to RDM. No enfeebles whatsoever (including Dispel and Sleep), hardly any enhances (refresh, haste, stoneskin, blink, phalanx, enspells)... and they don't even cure or nuke particularly better than rdm, except once every 4 minutes (longer if you want to combo stratagems). And in exchange for that they get... nothing much. They don't have a single spell RDM doesn't until the weather-change spells (meh) and their 60+ DoTs (we all know how much people appreciate DoTs).

I guess the passive benefits of Arts must be pretty huge, or SE wouldn't think that this was a reasonably balanced job... even so, they'll be very limited in what they can do, I think. /WHM will be the dominant SJ to get back some of the spells they're otherwise missing (-nas, barspells, protectra/shellra, erase at higher levels), I think.

Unless a bunch of spells were left off their list, of course.
Defeated: Maat, Divine Might, Fenrir, Kirin, Cactrot Rapido, Xolotl, Diabolos Prime, Kurrea, 9/10 Dynamis Bosses (missing Tav), Promathia, Proto-Ultima, Proto-Omega, 4 Jailers, Apocalypse Nigh, 6/6 Nyzul Bosses
                    RDM90, PLD90, DRG90, COR90, SCH90, BLU54
All Nations Rank 10, ZMs & PMs Complete, AUMs Complete, Captain, Nyzul Floor 100 (5 Weapons, 4 WS), Medal of Altana, WotG Mission 15, 1/3 Addons Complete, 9/9 Abyssea Main Quests, 6/6 Caturae

Yes, RDM is a bait and switch job -- but once upon a time, that "switch" was to enfeebler. My thought when I noticed this was, "Wait -- enfeebles actually work in this game?! Cool!" SCH, however, can't really do that. It heals, it nukes, and that's about it until after sub levels. If they really wanted mages to start subbing Scholar, SE could've stood to make the climb to sub levels a little more compelling. We're still gonna stick with our plan, mind you, but we actually have our reasons. -- Pteryx

Looking at the spell list on FFXIclopedia, they definitely look a lot different from RDM.

It looks like from the list there that they also get Regen II, Drain, & Aspir in addition to their weather spells and are lacking a lot of the RDM's enfeebles and enhancements.

I think it still sounds interesting, though not at all a replacement to RDM (which is a great thing!).

The passive benefits of the Arts do look pretty huge and it basically looks like, depending on the subjob, a SCH could completely fill in for a WHM or BLM in a party without sacrificing any utility.

Plus they get the board-hat and glasses. Can't beat that!

In response to Pteryx, I think what you said is pretty much spot-on. I don't know that RDM was ever "bait and switch"... the original vision of the job ended up just being too weak in execution and nobody wanted it, and by the time the game was released outside JP, it had already taken on the role of support class. Regardless, it seems like SCH is more along the lines of the vision they originally had for the RDM job executed with more thought about how the game actually works.

Keep in mind, their vision for Red Mage was and still is a Sword Mage, and, if nothing else, it lights up my little Taru heart to know they are at least trying to fix that.

you, S-E. You may sometimes appear to have an inner ear infection when it comes to balance, but at least I know you haven't given up on us.

Is somebody stopping you from being a Sword Mage right now on your RDM? You have En- spells, Blink, Phalanx and Stoneskin for just that purpose! I say go for it! Poke those badguys... poke 'em good!

                              I don't have all of those yet . . . I'm still a lowbie.

But, I'll be sure the next time I log in to FFXI, I'll poke 'em real good.

(But, yes, I do get yelled at for it occasionally, even though I AM still at the levels where Meleeing is supposedly still acceptable for Red Mages; or so I've read.)

The Jungles were fun for me also.

My enspells did more than my melee.

I thought I was cool with a Centurion's Sword and stuff. Little did I know that I wasn't cool at all.
