  • Pulling with Sam

So, I've been pulling frequently on my Sam, and (not so oddly) tanking just as frequently.

In either case, I've noticed a bit of a problem. If I'm pulling the mob, I usually hit it with my ranged attack (I have bow capped currently, and a +racc bow) and as a result gather a bit of initial hate. I'll truck the mob back to the camp, and start hitting it with the group. Then, immediately going into combat, the warrior or nin can only provoke the mob off me about 50% of the time. The other times, I've usually hit (or worse, crit) the mobs and thus steal alot of aggro. The problem here is, because I'm doing fairly significant damage along with the pulling, It's fairly difficult for the tank to steal hate.

Does anyone have any workarounds besides the obvious "don't pull" or "don't attack until the tank has aggro" or something like that?

Welcome to the life of most DD? Other than telling your tank to provoke right away and holding your WS's till after the tank gets hate I dont really have any other suggestions.

        Re: Pulling with Sam

The way I did this was to avoid the use of Berserk, I also stayed in Seigan mood most of the time.

I would TP along with the group till I got at least 100% TP. Afterwards, it depends on 2 factors, how fast my PT is killing and if Meditate is up.

If my PT is killing relatively fast, I'll run out and pull at around 30-40%. By the time I come back the mob should be at about 20-30% and I'll finish it off with a WS and maybe a few more hits.

If my PT is killing relatively slow, I'll run out and pull at around 20-30% so that by the time I come back I can WS the other mob to death and we can beat up on the new mob.

Now if meditate is up I'll run out and pull earliar then those estimated percentages. Mainly get a feel for how much your WS can do and how your PT members are doing. Now if you still have hate just turn around for 2 or 3 rounds and the mob should be focusing on the other DDs while you can run away for another pull. I think Hasso is generally what makes your DDing grab the mobs attention (or maybe the DDs your PTing with are just lacking in terms of skill/gear). At least this was the case for me. Everytime I used Hasso while DDing I'd grab hate, but if I resorted to just Seigan & Third Eye it wouldn't be as bad. Of course, I'm loosing some DD but I'm also pulling and keep mobs comming in a steady flow so it's all good to me.

A easier solution to this would be to grab someone who can SATA or TA(THF) onto whoever you want to tank.

          His sam is 12

At that lvl, Bow hits are like freaking cannon blasts on the mob, combined with the average dunes 'tank' there's not much that can be done.

Except, ya know, tank it. In the dunes, most melee have pretty much similar, if not the same stats. Hell I remember one pt as a thf where I had more Def then both the Pld and the War. And I was subless.

Gear plays a big part at those lvls, and with very limited offensive stuff, you should get the best Def gear you can afford. Sam can take hits pretty damn well in the dunes, so just take the hits and keep on rolling. For best results, go for low IT-VT mobs, and if you have no competition, high T mobs with fast chains works wonders (yes, I just suggested a TP burn in the dunes, it works.)

I say roll with it. Eat Rice Dumplings for the +30% ranged attack boost (also pumps melee attack and accuracy among other misc benefits) and have fun. Just wait until you hit 16 and can use a Power Bow +1. You'll be the king of the dunes >.>b (especially on flies)
