  • Penta Thrust

Just out of curiousity, have any of you found Penta Thrust useful in exp situations for SC's? I know the only lv2 it can make is Gravitation, so is it useful at all as a SC opener/closer and would it do more dmg than Tachi: Enpi? Just dinged 51 with sam and I was curious how useful Penta Thrust is in pt's.

I don't remember any single PT using gravitation. So I don't think it's that desirable.

I wonder why. No mobs weak to darkness? I know gobs are strong against it but I'd think crabs and maybe spiders would be weak. Weird. Well, it looks killer for farming. lol

The only "real" use for Gravitation *might* be off Torama's in Lab. of Onzozo, being that Toramas are weak to Earth, (or 1/2 of Gravitation). Of course, Distortion > Blizzaga II may prove to be better damage than Gravitation > Stone IIIn in terms of overall damage.

          Re: Penta Thrust

Imo, Penta went the way of the Dodo after SE nerfed tp. It does decent damage the first 3 or so levels after sam gets it, but it's best to just stick with G.kt now.

As for the SCs, it can make Compression, Detonation and Gravitation. But, as Alauna stated, Blm can mb for much more damage off other SCs like Distortion.

            Re: Penta Thrust

As a Dragoon it always depends on who's in the party and what we're fighting. Penta Thrust almost always does better than Double Thrust against goblins, but against Crabs I stick with DT. Against anything that's VT or lower I use Penta Thrust, because it'll be a lot easier to land the hits. When I'm fighting bats the party usually ignores a SC and just lets me PT to my heart's content.

the SAM in my LS utterly lothed Penta Thrust. "Nothing like an 11 dmg penta thrust" >< I agree that after the nerf from SE, Sam's are prob better off sticking with the katana

Thanks for the info. I'm still gonna keep spear lvl'd because I like to keep my options open. Plus, some of the polearm ws's just look too damn sexy not to keep it lvld. lol

Penta is nice in 60 cap Ballista :D Would never use it in exp situations though.

                    Re: Penta Thrust

I don't know about never, but I when I use it in the situations were it would do well I can land at least 3 hits, sometimes 4, and every once in a while 5. When the summoner has Ecliptic Howl AND Growl up there's no way I'm NOT using Penta Thrust.

                      Re: Penta Thrust

Actually Penta Thrust and other Compression type weaponskills do have uses outside closing Gravitation. And if you are doing Gravitation skillchain, your Black Mages can also Magic Burst Drain off it. In Yhoator Jungle, I worked out closing Gravitation as Thief/Monk with One Inch Punch with my party. It worked pretty well actually, but then we were chaining VT mobs.

Another more useful aspect of Compression weaponskills is the ability to be an opener for Distortion in a 3-person skillchain. Most parties are reluctant to do 3-person skillchains because of waiting but it does actually add quite a bit of extra skillchain damage. And waiting on TP is not really much of a problem for Samurai after level 30 anway. The order of these skillchains goes Compression > Transfixion > Distortion. So for example say you are in a party with the following 3 melee: Ninja, Samurai, and Thief. If your Ninja tank can get TP quickly enough you can create a nice 3-person skillchain of Penta thrust > Blade: Chi > Viper Bite (Or Dancing Edge if party is over level 60) that ends with a more powerful Distortion effect than if only 2 people had participated in the skillchain.

It really depends on your party make up and what level you all are to determine if 3-person skillchains are really necessary for your party however. If your 3 melee can create Level 3 skillchains it is more worthwhile to do so as the skillchain effect will be doing just about the same damage as the closing weaponskill. So if say your Thief can do SATA Sharkbite for 1000 damage, then Light skillchain affect will also add an additional 1000 damage.

If you're going to do Gravitation, SAM is better off opening with Tachi: Jinpu anyway, hehe. My Polearm isn't capped, but I just wish we got a good multi-hit WS like Rampage, Asuran Fists, Guillotine, etc. I use Tachi: Jinpu when farming easier stuff most of the time as it seems to do the most damage and also double attacks more often than the others. I did like 1348 or something on too weak when that happened w/o berserk, warcry, food, or even any good damage gear. Yukikaze is usually preferred for harder stuff for the blind effect since my evasion is capped.
