  • Food? which WS? DEX or STR rings?

Ok my samurai is still lvl 16 and i just want a few questions answered if you dont mind posting thoughts or suggestions. When it comes to food should i eat Mithkabobs (ther're all i can afford) or rice balls? And i'm also elvaan so do i need to specialize in DEX or STR? and one last thing. Which weapon skill should i use now and at later lvl's to do the most DMG if im not in a skill chain. thx all who respond.
FFXI rocks, but then again because of it i

    use kabobs

you should always try to be in the SC
if for some reason you aren't ( o_o ), Enpi is the most dmg until Jinpu, then Yukikaze/Gekko/Kasha.

All depends on mob and all

      From 1-48 (which I just gotlast night ) I've always use kabobs. +ATK +STR <Yes please.>

As an elvaan, you're top dog for strength, and the other Elvaan samurai I've met have alwsy griped about their accuracy, so I would say DEX. As for WS, I only have up to Kagero (orz...) But yeah, Enpi is your best bet, and it's highly unlikely that you wont be asked ot either open or close a skillchain.
Last night I was SC with a MNBK using Kagero and his Raging Fists for a spotty Fusion SC
Most times you'll probably be asked to use Enpi to close a SC for Distortion since a lot of monsters have a weakness to Water/Ice and the mages can get higher MB off of it. A lot fo time sit depends on your party make-up, but you can SC with pretty much evreyone, that's the wonderful thing about being a Samurai, in battle, everyone wants to be your friend

Has any SAM tried using Jack-o-lanterns instead of meatkabobs? I read the lanterns come with +10 acc and evasion. Maybe the +acc can prove more useful than hitting somehow harder?

I am just curious is all, since I am still deciding to lvl either NIN or SAM as my 2nd job. ^^

Alright thx for all the great responses but i have one last question. After i get my full AF set (lvl 62or 64 is all of it i think) should i stick with that armor or buy another set that is lvl 70 ( not sure of the name)?

Complete AF is level 60. Last thing you get with level 60 is Myochin Kabuto the AF Helm.

Level 59 is Haubergeon which is much better then the AF Body. It's 1,5 Mio on Odin, the HQ version is around 3,5 Mio.
Other parts depend on your money, Kote, Emp Harpin, Winged Boots or Leaping Boots could make things better then the AF equip but it's very expensive.

                Kote ~600K
                Emp Harpin ~350K
                Leaping Boots ~ 250K - Winged Boots ~390K
                Haubergeon ~1500K - Haubergeon+1 ~3500K

After 60 you should have more equip in your inventory - switching equip if you are doing WS is really helpful in PTs.
So there isn't the all over perfect equip, all depends on the situation and of course on your subjob too.

Last thing - the laterns, they are sold for 1 K each on Odin, I don't know how long the effect stays up and if the laterns have to same effect after the halloween event, same for the whole halloween items.

                The way of a samurai.

I'd say stick with kabobs. At 58, I can still see a very discernable difference in damage when using/not using food. I always use food in parties, but when it wears off you'll notice you're hitting for crap (especially on crabs).

So you're saying i should keep 2 sets of armor on me past lvl 60? and i dont think i will ever be able to afford a Haubergon (excuse the spelling).

i'm going to go out on a limb and say a Haubergeon is a must at some point. At level 59ish you should be able to farm for this at a reasonable rate.

LOL unless haubergeon goes for about 500k there will never be a reasonable rate of farming for it. it takes a month to farm it using conventional methods, and a month is in no way reasonable.

haubergeon isn't a MUST, but it really helps. good alternatives for those not lucky enough to be wealthy are master's gi, and assault jerkin.

Actually, on a complete lark, I decided to eat a Jack-o-lantern, just so I could see for myself. ACC+ is always hard to measure, since you can go on hot streaks with +5ACC and sometimes luck will be agaisnt you with +10ACC <shrug> But in my opinion I did notice a slight increase, not sure if it's something I would say is much better than Mithkabobs or Riceballs w/AF, but yeah, I think it does add ACC, might even be helpful agaisnt those damnable Torama's.
