What is the best subjob for a elvaan samurai? Hopefully one that will make a good subjob until you can unlock samurai.

the best (most efficient/fastest) path to elvaan samurai would be:

Start warrior, to 18. Subjob Thf. As elvaan your hitpoints will be ok, and you will want thf AT LEAST level 15 later on anyway, for farming. It also makes a decent tactical sub at samurai level 60+.

Warrior/Thief to 30/15.

Samurai/Warrior is simply the best, solid, all-round damage/tanking combo.

Samurai/Monk works, but its really just inferior in the end to Sam/War.

Samurai/Thief starts becoming an idea at 30/15 with sneak/enpi. I'd personally not recommend it until 60/30 for trick attack, but its a choice.

Samurai/Ranger if you have money and patience to keep up your archery skill is a nice alternative at 60. Its quite damaging, aggroing and its fun.

Samurai/Dark Knight is a rare approach to a damage samurai. I've seen it work. With a little MP gear, you can at least use absorb spells. However, its by far the least useful of the subs mentioned.
