Well, unless you were having trouble having Bio II doing damage, I doubt this did anything for you.

This is what concerns me most about this strat. The luck involved in landing a sleep seems quite a high risk, so I'm keen to try a strat that doesn't involve sleep. I've only seen one or two, though.

My Dark Skill isn't capped, and I used all NQ staves. Had no trouble landing sleep on him.

Landing sleep on Maat isn't that hard, unless you're dead set on going in on Lightday. There isn't any more or less luck to landing sleep compared to any other action.

Sleep is enfeebling when you are skilling up. Is it dark-based when you cast for some reason?
Guess I am gonna go with the sleep+nuke method after all

Granted I had my enfeebling capped, used a Pluto's Staff and went in on darksday, but he didn't resist a single sleep for me in my fight.

Re: How is Genkai 5 (the Maat fight) these days?

Cool video, but Maat went distinctly easy on her... chainspell bio lol. No blinks, no asurans, hardly any nukes during chainspell. In short, I don't think the person in the video won the fight as much as Maat lost it.

No offense intended - that's what usually happens when you beat Maat. But it makes crowing about the awesomeness of your strat somewhat hollow. What makes RDM Maat such a frustrating (and legendarily difficult) fight is that no matter your gear, strat etc., the outcome still depends on what Maat does. You can improve the odds for yourself, but you can't win solely on your own skill.

And the video maker did rely on sleep - right at the start. I strongly recommend that rush-and-sleep opening. Letting Maat have plenty of time to buff himself can be very very bad. You need to get that buffing time for yourself *while denying it to Maat* and that means an early sleep.

Players without an enhancing sword might be better advised to steer clear of the melee idea, anyway.

Re: How is Genkai 5 (the Maat fight) these days?

Because back in the day, I was told to cap drk in order for my sleeps to stick...so I did. Then when that failed they told me to get a Pluto's Staff....so I did. My enfeebling was always capped every level so I didn't have to work on that. It was only when I finally capped my drk skill, got a Plutos Staff, and went in on darksday that I was able to beat him. But like I said...this was quite a while back.

Re: How is Genkai 5 (the Maat fight) these days?

I managed to dig up a Japanese page on the matter which puts a bit more thought into it.
                      ½ô¹Ô̵¾ï Repause¡ÊRepose?¡Ë

Basic gist is, we know BLM is the job that Sleep spells were made for, so why would it be dependent on enfeebling? At the same time, if it were based on dark alone, RDM wouldn't be landing the spell as much either. So the assumption is made that it is based on a combination of enfeebling+dark (similar to how some BRD stuff is based on wind+string).

                      At level 75:

                      Sleep spells
                      WHM: enfeebling 225 + dark 114 = 339
                      BLM: enfeebling 230 + dark 269 = 499
                      RDM: enfeebling 276 + dark 200 = 476
                      DRK: enfeebling 225 + dark 269 = 494

                      And a related assumption:

                      Repose spell
                      WHM: enfeebling 225 + light 269 = 494

I guess this makes a fair bit more sense?

                        Lol... Too much math...

It's all Enfeebling + INT. Geez, JR, when was the last time you played.

I took the melee/dot route since I'm a galka. I also melee/dot with my 2nd account (elvaan). Beat maat both times at lvl 68. I tried to swapped in my earth staff when he used asuran fists.

really no strat involved >.> just make sure HP is up!

Also does Stoneskin last longer/absorb more dmg when cast on earths day or is it totally random? I know its based on your enhancing skill but set skill aside does earths day have any effect on it? I beat maat both on galka and elvaan on earthsday and stoneskin was such a help and it just seemed overpowered. Also to note i wasn't equiped with my earth staff.

Fight was straightforward in the end. I went on Darksday with mostly INT and MP gear, switching between the two as necessary. Wind staff, dark staff, enfeeble torque. Ate pie+1 for the INT and MP bonus, used 1 Vile Elixir after convert, but would have won it without. Wasted a dispel and gravity. A couple of sleeps resisted. Everything else went perfectly.
