  • personally i think that mithra would be the better option for a rdm than a human (i havent tried it so dont hold me to that!) i think that the dex is more important than the strength because as rdm lvl up - they start to miss, and miss, and miss in combat. hitting twice for less damage is MUCH better than hitting once for a little bit more damage and then missing. now i dont know how much of a difference that extra dex will matter in the end, but it should help compensate for constant missing.

plus mithra in rdm is the best looking thinkg you will see.

      • You made RDM sound like no one will invite you if they already have a WHM in the PT.

By saying if you are the closet thing to a healer... you will get invites...?

I don't understand. Back-up healing is part of the RDM job. But, all-in-all... buffs and debuffs... all my enfeebles land and last for a long time, unlike other mages. We get special enfeeble spells like Dispel.

And why do you hate North Americans? Please, do not judge all of us to be the same... because, I do not fit the NA discription you put on me.

        • Just a question.
What food do you Red Mages use? I started leveling cooking and I usually party with RDM buddy. So I started making food for him.
Is MND or INT more important? I know it kinda depends on the sub if it is /WHM or /BLM. Also how important is it to have either +MP food or heal +MP (that is before lvl 41-Refresh and with no BRD in the party)?

But still the main question; is there a preferable one food that RDM like to eat?

Please let me know, and also if you can separate before RDM lvl41 food and after.

Oh and please don't say "Brain Stew" cause it's lvl 90+cooking

          Many Thanks.

          • I hardly eat food anymore, don't really need it. But apple pie is good enough and cheap. Int boost for nukie powa if needed. Eat it always at lower lvls but when higher your manapool isn't as important, unless you are the main healer godforbid, and you'll prob only nuke for a MB anyways.

At higher levels, RDM won't be meleeing much in xp parties. You might do it for skill-ups, but no RDM will hit hard enough to make a significant dent in the ITs you'll be chaining. I stopped meleeing altogether against most enemies. You will NOT want to melee against foes in xp parties when they have nasty AE attacks or powerful WSes such as Jet Stream or *gasp* Dimensional Death. By hitting the enemy, you give it TP. This is not a good thing when your damage per attack is low.

The main problem with mithra RDM is their low MND. Hume will have higher MND, the same INT, and the same MP, making hume RDM superior to mithra in xp parties.

                  • Hi everyone. new to the forums.

I just recently got FFXI (PS2 US version) and started out as a Galka Monk. I love that race/job, but my friend just also recently got the game and I wanted to start over as a magic caster and a Hume (so I would be able to try many jobs without too much trouble).

So I decided on RDM. I'm level 5 right now and have a question about spells. Which ones should I buy (I'm looking as far as level 20 right now)? Currently I have:
                    - Dia
                    - Cure
                    - Stone
                    - Poison
                    - Paralyze (For level 6)
                    - Blind (For level 8)

Right now the only spells I use are Dia (cast it right away, to start a fight), and Cure (self explanatory).

I know spells are expensive so i wanted to ask you experts on which ones I should definitely purchase.

As far as sub jobs go, I'm pretty sure I wanna go BLM, if that's something you'd need to know.

                    Thanks everyone.

                    Dragoon AF-1: Completed!

                    • You pretty much listed all the spells you need up until lvl 10, but do not forget to buy your elemental spells (Aero, Water, etc.), they'll come in handy soon enough. Regarding lvl 10 and beyond, you'll want to buy Slow, Silence, Cure II and Regen, that's pretty much all you need, there are other spells available at those lvls, such as Bar-elementals and Bar-status spells, but you really don't need those, buy them ONLY if you can spare the extra cash.

                          • ummmm....rdm/nin

Yesterday someone told me that rdm/ni is one of the best subjobs for redmage. WHY? i asked. He then said they can do almost more dmg than a drk with this combo. He explained to me that red mages have a arsaneal of very good swors, duel weilding them with effects with enfire and everything +str can make rdm a very powerful fighter. This combo sounds pretty good, but has anyone been one?

                            Comment

                            • Yes, I have and I posted a lot about RDM/NIN in this thread. It has its good points and its bad points, but over time the bad far outweigh the good.

To sum it up: The combo is never as good as RDM/BLM or RDM/WHM and becomes completely ineffective after a while. A RDM would be better subbing one of the other mage classes to begin with and leveling up NIN to use solely for the purpose of soloing in later levels.
                              There will be cake.

                              • RDM/BRD can be effective after level 50, if there is no bard in your party; but it's even more work than RDM normally is at that level. You will always be doing something, even between battles. There are other threads on it on this forum so see those for more details.

RDM/NIN is just bad. Melee is not a RDM's strength (except maybe against slimes and elementals) and dual wielding won't make it so. Giving up the max MP, spells and JAs of a BLM or WHM sub for Ballad is one thing, and giving it up for Dual Wield and Utsusemi is quite another.

Some people say it's good for solo, but I don't know what they're doing with it solo; clearly not farming or NM camping (need Treasure Hunter or you're wasting your time) or traveling/fetch quests (/BLM for Warp is king here).

RDM/SMN is bad too. Conserve MP >>> auto-refresh (if you're casting normal spells; conserve MP wouldn't do a SMN main much good though) and you still don't get any of the spells and JAs of either /BLM or /WHM subs. Instead you maybe get one useful bloodpact (Aerial Armor) which you can't really afford to use. In fact there isn't any job that really benefits from /SMN. WHM/SMN doesn't completely suck but conserve MP makes WHM/BLM better.
