well......it depends on wut race you start out as:
Elvaan: you might wanna spend most of ur money on weapons and armors and such, especially near the beginning. you won't have too much mp to be wasting your money on magic, with the few exceptions of the vital spells like Cure and Protect.
Taru: You have lots and lots of magic. get some spells and armor so u can take hits while you nuke the crap outta the monsters
Human: you will be balanced anyways, spend your money on the vital spells and use the remainders on equipment. you mite find urself doing a lot of quests to get ur equipment ie: spatha
Mithra: ur mp will be same as a human cept you take a lil more dmg and more agi.
Galk: Same as Elv
I myself am a Taru, i luv being a rdm, i can heal, nuke, and if i feel like it fight! Tho i dont hurt for jack, but its great for the Renkei =D I can do RLB wit my PLD sub
Windurst for life!
Cactuar server is a ghost town compared to Jap =\
On what to lvl up: I only know what to do for Windurst, which should only be picked if u start as a Taru or Mithra
unless you party with someone who REALLY knows what they're doing, ie. someone lvling up a secondary job, you should solo:
lvl1-2: the easy crap just outside town
lvl 3-4 rarabs and stuff, anything that says "decent challenge" try to stick with crawlers cuz they drop silk thread $$$
lvl4-6 by this time you could probly take on crawlers and crabs, just follow the river

hmm .. there's quite many spells you can leave them till later on...
some that you need would be
all cure spell. get them as soon as possible.
protect.
paralyze, slow, silence
you can pass these spells
ba type. nice to have but not neccesary
en type. they are great to have when you solo. get en-ice and en-fire should be enough for soloing at low level.
shell.
elemental attacking magic are kinda in between... as redmage you can perform a healer task too and healing is more critical.
And I personally would go for weapon first, and only grab what ever armor i can afford with my left over money. with good attack it will help me kill stuff for more money a lot easier.

yes just start off as rdm first then , once you hit level 10 I reccomend leveling a blm to 10, so that after you get level 18, you will automatically be able to go to mog and access your blm sj.
that way you will be an automatic benefit to your PT.
One other question when you have to lvl. up your subjob, like blm, should you then sub your rdm job or use a whm sub instead? Id rather not have to lvl both whm and blm unless its really necessary
Hmmm.... If I were to play a MNK/RDM, would the En line of spells effect all of my hits, just the first, or just both punchs?
I'm asking this becuase I wondering if a MNK/RDM could be one of the best damage dealers in the game. With WAR you get a tiny bit more defense, the chance for an extra attack, and some decent stat boosts. With SAM you get extra tp. With RDM every hit you do does a few additional poitns of damage... add to that the fact that grapple has the lowest delay in the game and it may be a winner.
I'd ask on the Monk job forum, but this is really a question about RDM anyway.
yes your en will affect all hits you make.
there's limitation to that however. MNK doesn't have MP, using sub /rdm will only give very little MP you can use. And en magics power rely on your magic skill which will be very very low using rdm as sub job. I don't think it's useful.

En-magic doesn't do much damage when subbed. You'll get a much bigger attack boost from subbing WAR and using Berserk than when subbing RDM and using En-magic. And you won't miss as much as a MNK/WAR because RDM has pretty bad DEX. Red mage won't give you Double Attack either. In the long run MNK/WAR will do more damage than MNK/RDM.
After a lot of thought for the NA release I think I have almost settled on RDM as my job. I still have a couple urges to go THF, but I am pretty sure RDM is what it will be.
I have a quick question about weapons though. What is the difference between swords and daggers, and why would I want to use a dagger over a sword in combat?
Dispel is 32(someone posted it as different waaay back)
I also have a question on daggers and swords. Does the dagger weapon skill you get at the higher levels drain alot of mp? I noticed that after level 30 at the crawlers nest and even after I got the fencing degen, I missed alot of attacks, hit for 9-14 damage, and my Enchanting rarely did its max(9). So would switching to dagger around level 30 be a good idea?
Quick edit-I used a sword the whole way through(I didn't say that before)
