I've only been in one Colibri group as a RDM, but I was told not to debuff them at all. They said why, but I dont remember.

Stand in front of a mirror with a laser-pointer and target your own (or someone else's) reflection's eyes. You'll soon see why.

      Well, maybe not 'see' why...

Ya colibri reflect magic cast on them so if you unload enfeebles an nukes etc they will be comming back at yourself or whoever has hate at the time.

            Re: The Role

there are some things you can get away with casting on them, Dia is fast enough 9/10 times its comming back on you, and the other 1/10 it will eat a shadow. Slow can be cast because if it lands it is easily covered by haste.

              Re: The Role

Er, there's nothing entirely wrong with Debuffing a colibri, you just had better be sure to do it early on so it bounces back to you instead of the tank. Its a tad detrimental to debuff a colibri if you have a NIN tank, since that means a shadow lost, but if that Slow lands on you, there is the fact that you can Erase or overwrite it with Haste.

Even in the case of NIN, I've found Slow on Colibri helps out a bit, debuffing with a PLD tank is even less of an issue, just remove whatever it casts as soon as its mimicked.

/NIN melees are of no consequence to me, its your job to watch your hate and your shadows, I will not sit there and not debuff a mob just because you're scared of losing a shadow. What you spend on shehei is a drop in the bucket compared to what I spend on other jobs.

Now, nuking or AoEing a Colibri - that is a bad idea. Enfeebling, however, you play by ear.

Ah, thanks for the info. : )

All of this is new to me, I haven't played in so long and getting into my first couple xp parties was almost nerve wracking.

Worth noting that "Lesser Colibri" in ToAU area and "Colibri" in East Ronfaure [S] do not parrot magic; feel free to enfeeb to your heart's content.

Even for those Colibris which do parrot magic, you can still cast Dia II and Slow on them. Slow does nothing if one has Haste, and Dia II won't kill anyone in the few seconds it takes to cast Erase. Heck, if Dia bounces back on me, I don't even bother to Erase; that's what Stoneskin is for.

                  yet not a mote of dust is stirred;

leaving no trace in the water.

the effct of dia in a greater colibri party is also nice to wake you up if you happen to get slept by a mimicd sleep. Drop stoneskin take the dot and wake right back up. Often times you will be the only one with cure in the group so its nice to have a way to escape the 60s+ sleep 2 you will get from time totime.

its prolly just me, but when i start meleeing in a pt, i always keep -at a minimum- refresh, suitable En-spell, and debuffs up. granted this is only if im not main healer, but i tend to at least cast my enfeebles even if i am. when casting all of this i still stand next to the mob to get a hit in every now and then. if things start gettin ugly i back up and help main healer out.

to me the role of the RDM is to be as versatile as he/she can be. i can switch from one job to the next on my RDM prolly cuz im used to playing such a versatile job.

like i say on every other post where i defend the RDM, this is just me and my play style. im not postin this to start an argument or wnything else. im just posting this to show you how flexible a RDM can and how i make it.

I agree with Kitten. I've had the pleasure of leveling 4 rdms on various races and I tried doing 100% backline, 100% melee, and 50/50. I can say that there are very few rdms that can melee and do an effective job at the same time. This doesn't mean there are no rdms that can pull it off. Syko says that he doesn't have problems but he's probably one of the few. Since there are so few that can be effective, this is why people choose not to have rdms melee. I know when I was a melee rdm that there were times I'd go "Hmmm SC coming up and refresh round needs to start....which to do...which to do!?" It's fun being a melee but your mage duties should NEVER suffer because of it and many rdms just do NOT get this.

Please stop picking on Mr Mageo just for the sake of it. He's posted that he did NOT recommend melee'ing from 41-75 for most people. If you don't like what he posts, please use the ignore feature.
