As a red mage in an xp party, have you ever:
Main healed? All the time.
Tanked? Hah, never.
Pulled? Yes, due the the leader not realizing I was joking. :p Consistent chain #3s while still doing my normal job as a RDM.
Been main nuker? I think the only times I've ever been asked to nuke at all I was also expected to main heal at the same time, so, uh...
Pulled too much hate? I find that surprisingly hard as RDM. But there was this one time where a BLM -agaed the party badly while I was main healing, and so I put up Stoneskin and Phalanx and then Divine Seal Curaga IIed...
Skillchained (pre-Refresh)? I think so, back pre-25 when I was still allowed to melee at all.
Skillchained (post-Refresh)? Heck no.
Accidentally Chainspell + Warped out of a party? Nope.

Killed an NM? A few. There was this tree in Yhoator, as far as good fights go.

Been stunned/petrified to death? If Besieged counts. Stupid Bugards not letting me heal Najelith. She died too.
Been DOT'ed to death? (Bio, Dia, Poison, etc.) Think so.

Describe your best red mage moment: Actually using Chainspell to good effect in a merit party when I realized, "Shit, I have too much to do at once!"

Describe your worst red mage moment: A NIN insisting that I Haste her and that NIN was unable to tank without it. Never mind that she wasn't debuffing and that I had to debuff in her place in order to make sure her shadows lasted.

How long did it take you from 1-25? A fairly short time, maybe a month and a half.

How long did it take you from 1-50? A VERY short time, due to staticking with a SMN who was very dedicated to the job -- maybe three and a half months?

How long did it take you from 1-75? Due to losing access for a month, disrupting the static, I slowed down after 50. Also, after 60 I wasn't in much of a hurry; I could do what I wanted with little fear at that point. So the total buiildup probably took around a year.

What was your first subjob? WHM.

What is your current subjob? Depends on the situation.

What subjobs do you actively use on a regular basis? WHM, BLM, PLD.

How many times did you fight Maat? Would you believe once? I overprepared.

What is the biggest "close call" you've ever had? Too much has happened for any one to stand out.

How long did you solo before xping in parties? Until 14, knowing that otherwise I'd be asked to main heal but not be up to the task. Though I wound up PLed (without asking) for the last bit of it.

Did you solo any of your AF quests? I don't think so; at the time I was in a big linkshell, and we rarely soloed anything.

What was your biggest misconception about the job when you first started playing? Being so used to single-player console games, I honestly didn't expect debuffs to stick regularly.

What do you like most about being a red mage? Just generally that I make it all work. I fell in love with the support role years ago in role-playing.

What don't you like? That we can't be put into a melee role after the lowest levels. Of course, realistically being able doesn't mean we'd actually GET to, but I wish the option were there.

How many merits do you have? And what did you spend them on? 16 (no, I don't merit much -- I static with a moody BLM, but hey, good friend): MP lv. 1, Enfeebling lv. 1, Shield lv. 1 (for PLD's sake), Spell Interruption lv. 1, Ice Accuracy lv. 1, Wind Accuracy lv. 1, Paralyze II lv. 2, Phalanx II lv. 1.

What is your primary role in Dynamis? I don't have an endgame shell. Way too much of a time sink for something that by all accounts sucks fun out of the game.

What is your primary role in Sky? See above.

What is your primary role in Assault/Salvage? Assault and Salvage are two very different beasts. As I have no endgame shell, I don't do Salvage. As for Assault, depends on the Assault. Mostly I've done Excavation Duty, and for that I either follow the melees or solo the north wall. I'd like to do more of Lamia #13, but only if I can find more people willing to straight-up fight her rather than doing the play-it-safe kiting strategy -- it's more fun that way.

What is your primary role in XP parties now? When I get them, main healing.

What would you change about how you leveled RDM from the very start? More Hasting tanks when I was lower.

What was your biggest misconception about the job when you first started playing? Haha, you only asked this because you already know the answer. Same misconception as everyone else; that it was the battle mage S-E advertised and was in previous installments.
What do you like about being a red mage? I'm still trying to answer that. Off the top of my head, I'd say the self-sufficiency.
What don't you like? It's poor implementation. You don't put a Jack-of-all-Trades in an MMO.

As a red mage in an xp party, have you ever:
Main healed? Oh hell yes, lots of times. RDM + BRD is a beautiful thing.
Tanked? Only in skill up / coffer key parties, never in EXP
Pulled? Only a couple of times, and then the parties made me stop after how terrible I was XD
Been main nuker? As my main duty? Only a few times. But back in the day when people actually did Skillchains I usually had enough MP to magic burst.
Pulled too much hate? Yes, mainly due to being the only healer in a party where the tank was getting torn apart. 3 - 4 Cure IV's or Curaga II's back to back really piss off mobs. And of course Souleater + Last Resort + Vorpal Blade in skill ups.
Skillchained (pre-Refresh)? Hahaha... maybe a few times in Valkurm / Qufim
Skillchained (post-Refresh)? I think I did skillchain about once or twice, but it was accidental if I recall, and I stopped meleeing shortly after getting refresh.

Describe your best red mage moment: Best RDM moment? Probably getting my Duelist's Boots (only piece of AF2 I own, sadly). Either that or finally being able to put on my full AF. That was a good day.

How many times did you fight Maat? 3 times. First run was a test run, I was just going in to see how he operated. Second I got him to about 30% but he Asuran Fists'd me. Third run he never even broke my Stoneskin.

What is the biggest "close call" you've ever had? Maat being literally about an inch away from melee range when I got my last Aero III off, and then being at about 20 MP.

How long did you solo before xping in parties? 1-10

Did you solo any of your AF quests? Solo'd the boots. Solo'd the Coffer in Castle Oz, but didn't solo key.

What was your biggest misconception about the job when you first started playing? I didn't have too many misconceptions. I had been scouring these RDM forums for about 2-3 months before I ever got the game, so I knew what I was getting myself into.

What do you like most about being a red mage? The overall versatility of the job... being able to fill different spots when on events.

What don't you like? People expecting me to have an endless supply of MP in parties and then bitching at me when we wipe, after I had said Out of MP about 5 times before pull but the dumbass melees didn't listen.

How many merits do you have? And what did you spend them on? Haven't merited yet, I went straight to leveling SMN after I got RDM to 75. Going to merit both jobs (gaining merits on RDM, obviously) when SMN hits 75.

What is your primary role in Dynamis? Used to be main tank refresher/haster/backup healer, but I have to get Phalanx II merited before I can get back in this role. Nowadays I usually focus on enfeebling and Sleeping Avatars and Sleep/Silence BST pets.

What is your primary role in Sky? Refresh/Haste/Chainstun

What is your primary role in Assault/Salvage? Don't do Salvage, but in Assault usually just buffing and debuffing.

What is your primary role in XP parties now? Main healing, durrr.

What would you change about how you leveled RDM from the very start? I would have stopped and farmed more so I could have afforded better gear. I wasn't gimp, but I wasn't great either (hell I'm still not great gearwise).

Describe your best red mage moment:
Soloing Bune for the first time was an awesome moment for me since it had been something I'd wanted to do for quite some time. Also, obtaining my Duelist's Chapeau ranks up there.

Pretty much the entire stretch of 1-30, where I'm sure I was quite horrible as a RDM. It was around level 30 that I started consulting various online resources and really learning how the game worked.
How long did it take you from 1-25?
Don't recall, probly a couple months.

7 or 8 months.
How long did it take you from 1-75?
A little over a year. I leveled in a static that was off again, on again for quite some time.

5 times. A few of which, were more experimental than serious attempts. I wanted to try stuff like sleep arrows with a full ranged acc. setup and stuff like that.

Had Gration catch me with a 1k Thundaga III at 3% before that nearly one-shot me through Stoneskin. Fenrir came pretty close to one-shotting me as well on my first try with a double attack + Eclipse Bite combo.

Think I was round level 13 when I got my first party invite.

Was going to, but ended up doing them with LS friends.

I thought RDM would be a little more proficient in melee.

Meriting lol. I hate how limited RDM is in most merit party setups. It's fine for an hour or so, but long merit sessions can get pretty mind numbing.

Pretty much the same as in meriting. My LS likes to use BLM and BRD as the primary sleepers. RDMs seem to just run around, picking up whatever slack needs to be picked up while refreshing/hasting etc.

I usually solo/duo/trio alot of stuff in sky with some friends. Usually, I'm tanking or kiting something.

1) Waraxe Beak -> Draw-in + Breakga + Stonega IV
2) My first Maat fight
3) Sea Horror at level 39. I ran back into the cabin but he hit me thru the door.
4) Most embarrasing: Dying in CN while PL'ing. Got hate and linked about 10 caveberries.

What is your primary role in Assault/Salvage?Whatever the situation calls for in Assault between capabilities of all 4 of my lvl 75 jobs. I used WHM in Salvage so main healer (Salvage LS died I need new one...).

What would you change about how you leveled RDM from the very start?Not have a gimp lvl 8 SJ and had a real SJ from the start. NA was new to the game and nobody ever said anything so I didn't know any better.

As a red mage in an xp party, have you ever:
Main healed? I'd say 75% of my time in XP parties from 10-74 was spent main healing. 95% of it is spent main healing in merit parties.
Tanked? Only for occasional things like mission fights and such.
Pulled? Did a lot of pulling in manaburn parties from 54+. Still do some pulling in merit parties when something nearby has to be claimed and Slept.
Been main nuker? I try to avoid nuking like the plague. There's much better ways to spend MP than nuking usually. That said, I've been primary nuker a couple of times in lower level parties (RDM WHM BRD backline).
Pulled too much hate? Oh this happens a lot. Divine Seal + Cure 4 in the middle of a fight will turn a monster VERY quickly toward you. Fortunately I've learned to cast Stoneskin before doing this, religiously.
Skillchained (pre-Refresh)? Quite a lot before Refresh. Not for significant damage, but hey, every bit counts I guess.
Skillchained (post-Refresh)? I don't think I've ever done a skillchain in a non-skillup party on RDM post-41 aside from special things like mission fights.
Accidentally Chainspell + Warped out of a party? Nope. Then again, I rarely used /BLM sub, so never really had much opportunity.
Accidentally Chainspell + Escaped out of a party? Never. Did use /BLM for a span of levels in The Boyahda Tree and Chainspell/Escaped a couple of times on purpose, but never by accident because I never used a macro for it.
Shown up with the wrong sub? Happens once in a blue moon. Nowadays I'm almost always RDM/WHM. Would use RDM/DRK if I had it available for endgaming, but because I don't, I don't get asked to use RDM much.

Describe your most horrible death: Wasn't on RDM, but I do remember taking some 2600+ damage through Stoneskin from a Spike Flail from Nidhogg many moons ago. Just... ouch.

Describe your worst red mage moment: Feeling totally outclassed in an XP party in the late 40's fighting Antica in Quicksand Caves. Dispel was spotty, Silence wasn't sticking, and Slow was unreliable. Extremely frustrating as RDM.

How long did it take you from 1-25? Was so long ago I don't even remember. Want to say something like 2 years, as I do recall levelling RDM for a WHM sub up to level 15 when I started playing, and leaving it there for many, many months.

How long did it take you from 1-50? Once I actually started levelling RDM actively, probably 2 months to get from 15-50 of on-again-off-again play.

How long did it take you from 1-75? I took a looong hiatus from FFXI and stalled RDM in the mid-60s for a long while. Probably 6-7 months.

What was your first subjob? I used RDM/BRD almost exclusively from 1-29.

What is your current subjob? RDM/WHM

What subjobs do you actively use on a regular basis? RDM/WHM 99% of the time.

How many times did you fight Maat? 0 on RDM. Did him on WHM.

What is the biggest "close call" you've ever had? Hmmm... not on RDM, but I did survive a ~1200 damage Overhead Strike from Dynamis Lord once and lived to tell the tale.

How long did you solo before xping in parties? I solo'd on RDM until somewhere around level 20.

Did you solo any of your AF quests? Some of them. Most were done as a duo. Already had WHM at 75, though, so it's not as impressive as it sounds.

What was your biggest misconception about the job when you first started playing? Well, back when I started playing, there wasn't any such thing as Refresh available back in the FFXI beta circa 2003, so RDM felt very much like a watered down half measure between WHM and BLM.

What do you like most about being a red mage? Infinite MP. I can cast spells 100% of the time and not worry about running out of juice.

What don't you like? Micromanaging Convert. It's worth it, but it's tedious.

RDM isn't my primary job, and is used primarily for merit parties, so my merits are focused on that role.

What is your primary role in Dynamis? I never use RDM in Dynamis. If I did, it would be as Refresh Tank/Silence/Paralyze/Sleepga support. If I had /DRK available, Chainspell/Stun would be added to the list in lieu of Sleepga.

What is your primary role in Sky? I rarely use RDM in sky, but there's little to no difference versus Dynamis.

What is your primary role in Assault/Salvage? Same as above.

What is your primary role in XP parties now? I pride myself on being one of the few RDM who can stay on top of a 20K/hour merit party and never run out of MP without resting. At my current gear/merit levels, I can handle 8 castings of Refresh/Haste per Refresh cycle for the party while still main healing, casting the odd Dia II/Paralyze/Dispel, and backup link control with Sleep / Sleep II, with some MP left to spare to toss out the odd Blizzard III at the end of a Convert cycle. I'm pushing hard to get enough Convert effeciency to reach 1200 MP returned, but it's hard finding enough +HP gears...

What would you change about how you leveled RDM from the very start? Very little. I'm very happy with the performance of the RDM job, when appropriate subjobs are used.

What was your biggest misconception about the job when you first started playing? That it could both Melee and Cast Magic enough to be effective.
What do you like most about being a red mage? Seeing monsters suffer to my enfeebling, and watch them die as I buff up my party members with refresh and haste.
What don't you like? Main Healing. I will do anything to avoid Main Healing in EXP, because I hate the thought of our A+ skill being useless. Merit Parties I will most likely tolerate, because I imagine the party doesn't take damage anyway. Like I said, I'm on the verge of soloing to get to 75. I take it too personal and seriously start throwing a fit when I'm invited to main heal in EXP, because I always think we're going to wipe or something when my convert isn't ready and I'm all out of MP. I threatened myself to quit Red Mage because of it, but I'm looking through alternatives. Call me gimp, uptight, or not useful, but I present this as a new challenge. RDM/NIN in two statics to 60-63 was one challenge I felt I passed, even though I lost that edge I had (which I'm hoping to regain through solo)...getting the rest of my levels to 75 without main healing will be another, since I sympathize with other Red Mages who were forced into it. I want to do Red Mage stuff, even in Experience parties, so it's best to let me and a White Mage have our way.

What is your primary role in Dynamis? I haven't done any Dynamis runs.

What is your primary role in Assault/Salvage? Debuff, keep everyone buffed.
What is your primary role in XP parties now? Full support, as much as possible. I think I've already talked about how stubborn I am with my Red Mage's party role.
What would you change about how you leveled RDM from the very start? Most of everything- my misconception on what the job does in EXP. I've already played the game too long to change my role into something I've never wanted to do in the first place. Think May 2004, with a short hiatus between September 2006-April 2007.
