  • Please Help!

    Ok I havent started playing yet, but I want to be a red mage. My question to you is what does it take to be a good red mage? I have read some of the Red Mage Index, and I got most of it. I just want to know like what magics are important, and if their are any that I should skip? Or like are they all very vital in being a red mage??

    You're going to want every single spell. It makes you competent. To be a good Red Mage, you need to keep your gear somewhat up to date(as in level-wise) and get all of your spells. Also a properly leveled Mage sub job is your best bet to be worthwhile.

      RDM has two primary sub jobs both of which you'll be using situationally in 90% of parties. Those are Black Mage and White Mage. Both are extremely common, but you'll definitely need White Mage for parties later on when you're main healing. It's also good as it provides a source of income through the tele-taxi service (level it to 42 for best results and don't sell your Teleport Scrolls).

      Extra credit subjobs (highly situational): NIN, DRK, BLU, BRD, SMN

      As stated previously, do not forget any spells. This is especially true for two spells which are quite pricey on most servers but that you will need. Those are Dispel and Erase. Erase comes from your WHM subjob and has come down in price quite a bit. It can still be a bit of a hassle, but not so much as it used to be when the spell cost 500,000gil (I hear tell that way long ago it used to cost 1,000,000gil but if I remember that, it's only vaguely).

      You'll be pretty good with a sword and a dagger before you hit 40th level. However, right about 30-40 you'll begin to see parties where you never touch the monster, and your skills will begin to decline. Make sure you revisit them occasionally and try to keep up even though you will most likely level much faster than you skill up on them. Enfeebling will be forever capped--it's is your first and most common duty. Elemental magic is also quite easy to cap despite it being #4 on the list. Healing and Enhancing magic, two of the most common things you're called to do, will be very difficult to cap and it is highly unlikely that you will be able to cap either while XPing. Capping of these skills is not largely necessary. Once you hit your Cure soft caps, it becomes rather superfluous to increase Healing skill. Enhancing skill, however, can be very beneficial in the solo game as well as for casting the ubiquitous Bar- spells that occasionally step in with a nice resist at a crucial moment (e.g. Goblin Bomb). Red Mage Bar- spells (from WHM sub) are more potent than a WHM's for most of the game until they steal your thunder with merits and Blessed Briault.

      You will spend most of your early life as a second-rate melee and backup healer, most of your mid-life as a mana battery, and most of your end game as one of the most sought after players in the whole game. Prepare for off-flag invites (you'll learn how to use /anon).

          Don't bother to skip any spell. Almost every spell is important in some situation, with the possible exception of a few of the bar- spells. (Even then, they are not bad spells.)

          It's actually fairly easy to fall behind in Elemental Magic, if you tend to be ultra conservative with your MP usage--I do that because I rather hold MP for emergency cures than toss out relatively ineffective free nukes against "Incredible Tough" monsters.

          The good news is, RDM is quite good at soloing, so you can skill up on your own fairly easily. I especially liked to target worms for skilling up elemental magic; silence the worm, and then just keep up Stoneskin and Barstone. Keeping up Sword, Dagger, and Evasion skills are not hard either, but it requires going toe-to-toe against foes; luckily, Stoneskin, Phalanx, and Ice Spikes are all at your disposal.

          (Parrying and Shield skills, on the other hand... meh.)

            Hey thanks sounds like fun! Ok I wont skip any spells then, also are spells really exspensive? I like Red Mage because, I always liked using a sword, white, and black magic in the Final Fantasy series. Plus I loved them in the old FF (FF1-FF6, I think dont remember.)

              This one fact will make FFXI easier for you. It is not FF1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, Tactics, TA, Mystic Quest, Legend or X-2. As soon as you stop comparing them, you're better off.

                I was not comparing anything, I am just saying that I got the idea to be one was from those games, not saying that they are alike in any shape or form because they are not.

                  If you like using a sword and magic, get any job to level 30 and level Blue Mage instead.

                  Red Mages can use swords, it's true, but chances are you'll barely ever get a chance to hit anything with it in XP parties because you'll be too busy casting spells.

                    The one difference about the Blue Mage is that they don't use black or white magic on their own (from my understanding). Althought it is still a nice job to try out.

                      The reason Icemage suggested BLU instead of RDM, because the mix of magic and swordplay is what the OP seemed interested in. Not just the mix of black and white magic.

                        Yeah, but Hinder is new to the game and might not be familiar with the Blue Mage. I was just pointing out that they don't use elemental magic like most other mages.

                            I know what a blue mage is I aint stupid lol. To be honest I like being a rdm even though I am only level 7. I also like magic more then swordplay in the first place. So I guess red mage would be for me, but at the same time I do want to give blue mage a shot aswell!
