  • Phalanx II worth it ?

    Hi All

    I am comtemplating on whether or not I should merit Phalanx II or not. I maxed my Paralyze II already and I would rather max Slow II instead of Phalanx II, however, I jsut recently joined a hnmls and I was told to merit Phalanx II as it's usefull against Gods or any other HNM in that matters. I have very little experience with HNMs fyi.

    In addition, I don't want to just put 1 in Phalanx II and It's either max upgrades or don't put anything so I am not sure if full upgrade of Phalanx II really worth it or not.

    I would appreciate if some1 can give insights/suggestions regarding phalanx II.

    I haven't seen anyone crazy enough to fully merit Phalanx II, but if your HNMLS is telling you to merit it you might have no other choice.

    After you do... you could come back and tell us if it's worth it or not for future generations of RDM to know.

    BTW, how good is fully merited Para II? does it kick in more often than Ice Spikes Para effect?

      I need some1 crazy enough to full merit Phalanx II so he/she can tell how good/bad it is :D:D and that crazy some1 is definitely not going to be me lol. I might have to talk to my hnmls leader about this and or possibly ask some other RDM to merit phalanx II.

      I really like full merited Para II and it does proc a lot more than having only put 1 in it (This is solely based on my observation. No data/test has been done). Comparing to Ice spike, I have really no idea as I don't melee much. Last time I soloed was against chigoe for parry skill up and I use Ice spikes incase I am in danger and iirc it did proc a quite often and I was using RDM AF relic tights.

      One thing that's noticable with full upgrade Para II is it's somewhere around 40% procs or maybe even 50% based on my observation. Note that I was a Mithra RDM/BLM with +49 mnd with gob mushpot against ep mobs (Gobs in new ton). In addition ,it's no more random procs like Para I so all in all, I am very happy with max upgrade Para II.

        well here's some information about it I found on alla:

        Phalanx II is a Single-party-target ONLY spell.

        Phalanx II unmerited with 256 Enhancing: 15 Damage Reduction

        Phalanx II unmerited with 278 Enhancing: 16 Damage Reduction

        Phalanx II lasts 120seconds unmerited.

        Phalanx I with the same Enhancing can gain 5~10 MORE damage reduction then Phalanx II and lasts 180seconds.

        This said Phalanx II is considerably weaker then Phalanx 1 unmerited. With each merit, however, Phalanx II gains 3 damage reduction and a 30 second duraton increase. This means at fully-merited state Phalanx II will reach up to 22 damage reduction with 278 Enhancing Skill level and a duraton of 180 seconds. This is still worse then Phalanx I at double the cost but seeing as how this would not be casted on you for any real purpose anyhow, this spell still has its uses.


        With a 22 damage reduction and a three minute duration, this spell becomes highly effecient. Say you have a paladin tank fighting a monk type mob that hits for 40 damage per hit every 5 seconds.

        Without Phalanx II:
        480Damage/Minute
        1,440 Damgage in three minutes.

        With Phalanx II:
        216Damage/Minute
        648 Damage in three minutes.


        Phalanx II alone saves you a TON of mp and can basially allow the tank to main heal himself. Phalanx II is like throwing an auto cure ito every attack that hits the tank.

        The effect is much less effective against a bigger mob that hits say... 80 damage every 2.5 seconds, that would be alot less effective, though it is still useful.

        My opinion of Phalanx II? It's one of the best support spells red mage has and I recommend every red mage try and fully upgrade this spel because it benefits the party GREATLY.

          sounds like a really neat spell to have if you run a lot of dynamis as Rdm.
          Not sure about other situation.
          With limit of 6 this is really a hard choice....

          spells I want - paralyze 2, dia 3, phalanx 2.
          spells I don't want - bio 3, blind 2
          spell I'm not sure... - slow 2.

              Hmm sounds promising if Phalanx II is fully upgrade but wouldn't it better to full upgrade slow II ?

                It seems like an OK spell that would've had some use if it was lvl 50-60 (like all the other merit spells), but I rather merit other things than that, heck, I'd rather level other jobs than that.


                Not much for me to merit (RDM specific) after Convert recast really.

                I think the same, Slow II + Para II would save more mp and would work regardless of the tank.

                    I have Lv.1 Paralyze II, Slow II, and Phalanx II.

                    So far, here's what I've found:
                    1. All three of them look pretty sweet! lol
                    2. Paralyze II can be fickle. Sometimes it's much better than Paralyze, but doesn't last as long, other times I wonder why the hell I spent 3 Merit Points on it.
                    3. Slow II lasts quite a while it seems, and I've noticed a difference in how Slow mobs are. This one I've found is worth it, and a few NINs have been glad I had it as well.
                    4. Phalanx II, with my MND115+ and Cap'd Enhancing Skill +7 from Torque eats 15~18dmg a round. I've only tested this in TP Burn parties. Completely nullifies Spike damage, PLDs and MNKs seem to love that I have it.


                    TP Burn parties have requested that I Phalanx II everybody, but I keep telling them it's Haste everybody, or Phalanx II everybody. Surprised that they all ask for Haste? lol I generally Phalanx II the person who does the most in WS damage, since they get to tank for being so awesome.

                    I've considered Meriting Phalanx II, but as it is I've spent 3/6 for this sub category. I've heard Lv.3 Slow II is somewhere between 22~28%. That's pretty freak'n significant. I have yet to decide what else I'll merit in this category. (I have no HNM activities or experience. Perhaps once I start doing that, I'll decide what to drop Merits into next.)
