The only part of Avesta's choice of merits that is noteworthy is that his analysis (which I mostly agree with, though not entirely) is from the viewpoint of a solo RDM.

For instance, if you're a RDM75 and your primary activity is large group activities at end-game, you're much more likely to invest in Ice Magic Accuracy than Convert Recast.

If you have other jobs at level 75, those are also going to affect your choices as well. Someone who has Monk at 75 and enjoys the job is going to skip the +8 Sword merits and choose to dump those points into Hand-to-Hand more likely than not.

That's one thing that sucks about the merit system. I mean REALLY sucks. Except for job-specific categories, whatever you pick out affects all your jobs. If you're a 75 NIN and you merit your enmity up, you're screwed if you ever decide to raise BLM. If you're a 75 RDM and a 75 BLM, do you merit up enfeebling magic or elemental magic? If you're a BLM and a SAM, do you go with INT or STR?

In short, I think the merit system was created with the idea in mind that everyone has one "primary" job, which isn't really the case anymore, but SE is so out of touch with the playing community that they never realized it.

I agree. This is especially strange considering that the ability to switch jobs is probably FFXI's strongest selling point in terms of cool and interesting gameplay.

Well to be honest "Avesta's recommendations" are pretty substandard choices for most RDMs. There's nothing too special, and I personally would throw in some Wind Accuracy merits too.

Hmm... interesting view point but I'd trust the opinion from someone on my server, not discrediting him but I have more confidence on rdms good at their job on my server who's credibility I know
