Rdm has a very refreshing life past that point.
There are painters who transform the sun into a yellow spot,
but there are others who with the help of their art and their intelligence
transform a yellow spot into the sun.

Ok, so race does affect jobs that much. Here's another one of my noobie questions: Does race influence your crafting abilities or anything like that?

Nothing affects your crafting abilities...not even crafting. Not for me anyway. Therefore, crafting = dung.

Intresting thing though is the NPCs in the starting towns to a degree suggest otherwise. Even some wandering NPCs make refferences of Mithra being better fisherman. The release notes about the game back in like 2002 even made similar refference, but nothing was ever proven if there truely was any distinguishable difference.

After all as race goes not all are equal in everything they can do with items. For example Galka's can eat raw Meat without the need of any special equipment. Mithra can eat raw fish without the need of any special equipment. Though as far as I'm aware raw meat and raw fish hardly gave much in any form of improvements.

Well, I'm a Mithra and possibly the worst fisherman in the universe. I've caught a handful of fish and broken more rods than i can count. The only skillups I got was a .3 from breaking a rod.

The only difference for races as far as RDM is concerned is the selection of gears you'll choose, and your available MP.

Galka: Very low base MP. Galka RDM have to work really hard to find +MP gears, not just for resting, but for swapping in for Convert.

Elvaan: Low base MP, though not as terminally low as Galka. Elvaan also have to work pretty hard to find +MP gear, though they're helped in that they have very high MND, which relieves some of the pressure to boost that stat at the same time as MP.

Hume/Mithra: Average MP. Can strike a happy balance between MP and other gears on as-needed basis.

Tarutaru: The only race where it is extremely possible to have more MP than HP. Tarutaru RDMs are the only ones that end up actively seeking +HP gear.

All races of RDM perform about the same when equipped reasonably well at level 75. Perhaps a very slight nod to Elvaan RDMs who have both Dalmatica and the Duelist's Chapeau, since at that point their lower MP pools are overshadowed by their phenomenal MP recovery speed, while still maintaining their edge in MND - but the difference is subtle at best even in those cases.

Macht, I'm sure that the "Mithra make great fishermen" thing is just NPC RP. If one race had an advantage crafting-wise over another, I think people would know by now.

And be angry about it, because that's pretty crappy.

Nah, RDM is useless post-41. You're talking about the mages' version of the Puppetmaster. [/sarcasm]

Um... I thought Elvaans were better known for their INT instead of MND?

To OP: With Red Mage, it's all about looking sexier than anyone else while remaining top of the game, our AF is proof of that. Pick the race/gender you think is sexiest and you'll be fine... [/joke]

Elvaan have the highest ratings amongst all races for both STR and MND (but their other stats, other than CHR, are subpar to balance it).

Galka are both smarter and faster than elvaan strangely.

Elvaan - worst int of all races, highest mnd of all. Don't forget a lot of endgame rdm spells are mnd based.

I'd definitely try to make a character with a good backside (since you'll be looking at this for most of the game), and come up with a cool name (sorry, no x's or pwn's allowed). Do some research on cities and start on one you think you'll like. I'm very happy with Sandy, for example. However, there are times as a cook that I wish I'd started in Windy. Now that I think of it, you'll probably wish you could change your character and city multiple times throughout the game, for any number of different reasons, so maybe you should just do whatever seems best right now. This game, like long-term relationships, is often more about commitment than excitement/romance.
                          Character: Bricklayer
                          Server: Ramuh
                          31 RDM/ 23 BLM/ 20 WHM
