Whats the best race for RMD? Hometown?

I am thinking about buying FFXI, and I think I want to become a red mage. But I can't decide what race I should become. I want to be either a taru, a hume, or a elvann. Which one of those is the best for soloing? Oh, and where should my hometown place be?

Any race can play rdm just fine. pick the race you like the appearance.
Personally I think sandoria is the easiest place to start playing. Beautiful forrest right out of the city and easy to travel to levelling ground.
Or if you want the extra newbie ring then you should start your taru at winduest, and hume at bastok. This ring adds a little bonus to your status, nothing crutial but nice to have

Your hometown can be which ever nation you prefer. However, if you choose the nation your race is based in you will start out with a nation ring with some helpful stats on it (not a dealbreaker though, so start wherever you like).

I'm not going to get into which race is best for the job. Play the race you like, since you won't be a RDM 100% of the time (heck, you may not even like the job).

Hell, before the game came out stateside(This was also before Zilart) I wanted to be a Elvaan Female Dark Knight/Thief... not because of any of the game mechanics, but because that was the closest thing to a badass assassin with a scythe that I could become.

Plus WS like Dark Harvest sounded pretty awesome to me at the time.

So I began playing the game... started as THF, I hated the job. I quit around Lv28(Oh so close to being able to unlock DRK). Then went back and leveled WAR to 37(Unlocked DRK on the way) and you know what level my DRK is now? It's 3.

Please do not pick your race based on what job you think you want to be before playing the game. It might not be as great as you think.

Any race can play any job, especially for rdm. Probably the only job in the game where race makes less of a difference on your performance is bard. As others have said, pick the race you think looks best. The small differences in stats will have less impact on your enjoyment of the game than having an avatar you don't like.

If you're just starting off, Windurstian Mithra or Tarutaru works pretty well for RDM. You get the Windurstian Ring which gives +1 INT +1 AGI and +3MP which is a quick and useful bonus for those early levels.

While it's true that later on job race doesn't make a whole lot of difference (particulrly for RDMs), that city ring does help RDMs a bit. Not much, and certainly not enough to tip the scales if you really want to play something else, but if you're completely undecided, it's certainly a valid choice.

i pick Hume Sandy and now i'm lvl 62 and the home nation had no affect to my game play, hume has a all round stat so thats the best to pick if you want to play all jobs to lvl 75

Remember: that is his opinion. As a Windurstian, I hate leveling in San d'Oria. I prefer Sarutabaruta because it's not so dank and dark, there are lots of mobs to get great items to sell, and of course the warp Taru system inside the city. And I think the story is the most interesting compared to the other cities. You can always change cities in game if you want to, but your rank will be reset.

And, yes, you don't have to match your race up with your country, but if you want the ring go for it.

Ronfaure has mobs that drop items that sell well also. And they have Ghelsba, where you can make a fortune in Dark and Fire crystals. Plus, the way Sandy is laid out you don't really need a Warp system.

Not that I think Windurst sucks (I happen to like it as well), but it's really all a matter of taste.

I am currently Windustrian and HATE the fact the city is so damn big you have to use the warp tarus... Any time you have to do a mission thing you have to run to Heaven's Tower in the middle of nowhere... /fume. I'm only doing it for MCB, then a quick stop in Bastok to get my Republican's Gold Medal then back home!
