is red mage funner then black mage? whats better?

i understand black mage can hit harder but cant take as many hits, rdm have better healing skills, rdm almost have infinate mp, rdm more of a support in parties and such but in the long run whats better???

But yeah no-one can tell you the right answer. Personally I like White Mage both either, but if I had to choose, I'd say Black because I dislike Hybrid classes. But after 41 I believe it is, Red Mages become like super powerful.

Some people hate BLM but love RDM. Some hate RDM and love BLM. Some people hate both and would rather level something else. Others like them both...

Level them both. If nothing else, you have a couple of subjobs leveled.

I have to say they're even. They both have seperate strengths and weaknesses that make them both wonderful to play. When I feel like making things blow up, I strap on my BLMness and paint the town red. When I feel like being supportive, I strap on my RDMness and help my party paint the town red. It all just depends on my mood when I log on. The best part I find is that we have the options to change which class we play whenever we feel like it without having to start a new character.

To copy cat what everyone else has said, play them both and decide which one you want to be. I took that advice and I'm playing all my starter jobs since my wants constantly change.

They're both different jobs, actually. So this is a loaded question. BLMs specialize in nuking. That's it. You invite a BLM, you're expecting big bombs of hatred and magical destruction to be laid on the battle field.

You invite a RDM because you're looking for a support member in terms of Refreshing, Enfeebling and Backup curing.

True, RDMs can Nuke, but not at the level BLMs can. You don't invite a RDM to nuke if you can choose a BLM.

And True, BLMs can enfeeble, but not at the level RDMs can. You don't invite a BLM to backup cure, enfeeble and supply the rest of the PT with Yagudo drinks every 3 minutes if a RDM is available.

So the truth is, like every class in FFXI, they're different jobs with different tools to fill different roles.

All joking aside, I actually don't mind the way most of the mage jobs in FFXI work. My online handle is one I chose twenty years ago, and really doesn't do much to reflect my personal preferences.

Besides, if I were really hard-core about ice magic, I'd be playing WoW, where there really ARE Ice Mages (hah!).

Anyway, it's all a matter of opinion when it comes to how "fun" jobs are. Personally, I think BLM is more "fun" than RDM, mainly because it is a bit less complicated. However, I prefer to play RDM as a main job because it is complicated. I love having something to do at every moment, and when I'm bored I can nuke like a BLM and have a blast.

BLM is complicated in it's own way, with magic bursts, elemental enfeebles, elements, and smart MP using, but it's multitasking requirements pale in comparison to RDM. With RDM (at middle/upper levels) you have to balance refresh, enfeebles, haste, curing, and nuking (nukeing?) while making sure they all work properly. You need to know when you can and should rest, and the difference between what you can cast on a mob or player and what you should cast on them.

I'm not going to give you any advice on what you should pick. It's your decision, and you might not agree with me. For example: I think WHM is horrifically mundane to play, which is why I only have it leveled to 26. I have several friends who have taken it to 60+, and a few who have it at 75.

No matter what you choose, you will be leveling another mage job anyway. Like if you choose BLM, you will have to level WHM to sub. If you choose RDM you will need either WHM or BLM to sub, depending on which you like better (I prefer BLM for warp, aspir, and drain, but you really should have both leveled in case your party has a favorite).

I have spent a considerable amount of time developing an algorithm will evaluate the funness of Red Mage versus Black Mage:
