Re: Thinking about RDM!!!
In terms of weapons and playing tactics, there is a ton of info on this board. Questions such as what to sub and party roles are also here.
Now, once you learn a spell, your character remembers it forever. Once you get a certain skill level in something, it stays with you forever.
So if you learned Cure at level 1 as a WHM, at lvl 3 RDM, you won't need to buy Cure again: You already knew it.
The different mage jobs learn things at different levels(For instance, Dia is a lvl 1 RDM spell but a lvl 3 WHM spell), but as long as you "unlocked" it, it'll be available.
Starting out as a WHM was probably for the best, because WHM will be an important sub for you as a RDM. In my opinion, WHM is the most painstaking job to level for ppl who want to use it as a sub, so the sooner you get it out the way, the better.
The rest of the info you asked for is easily available on the forums with a bit of digging, even on the first page of the RDM Forums.

Re: Thinking about RDM!!!
RDMs are universally powerful jobs. With the proper sub, a RDM can be the key to taking down a near impossible monster, able to solo some experience points, and many different other things.
Weapons: A RDM does best with a Wand in hand. Although Sword ranking is an impressive B+, you won't be wanting to melee much...or rather other people won't want you to. Using a wand means you get both +INT and +MND to help land your enfeebling spells. If you're soloing, a dagger for Energy Steal or a Sword are the best choices, but in a party setting you'll be using first clubs for INT/MND, and later adding Elemental Staves. I frankly myself do not know if Elemental Staves aid in the landing of debuffs in any way, but you'll require them for nuking and curing.
Equipment: Equipment wise, RDM can be very stressful. You need good INT for Black Mage based Enfeebles and Nukes while MND for the key ones of paralyze and slow. Most RDMs swap between rings and neck gear with almost every spell. Torques also become a problem when you hit later levels, as you need Elemental, Enfeebling, and Dark Torque (Dark only assumes for 2 subs)
Subjobs: There are 4 key RDM sub jobs: WHM, BLM, NIN, and DRK. /DRK is for soley for Chainspell + Stun at 75. /NIN is purely for soloing. /WHM is for when you are asked to main heal or if the enemy gives out status effects often. /BLM is the generally preferred sub due to higher Clear Mind, Aspir, Drain, and Conserve MP.
Job in Party: A RDM is technically a mage that can cover all bases. They can cure or they can nuke, but most RDMs agree your main job is to enfeeble. Dia, Bio, Paralyze, Slow, Elemental Enfeebles from BLM sub, Gravity, Poison, and Blind all round out the RDM repitore. At level 40, the key ability Convert is used. Every ten minutes, you swap your current HP for your current MP (unless your MP is 0). Upon hitting level 41, you receive the fantastic spell of Refresh, which gives a job 3 MP per tic (roughly 3 seconds). Due to Refresh's recast time, it is possible to setup a refresh/enfeeble cycle. RDMs are also required to backup cure (if a WHM or SMN is present) and magic burst. RDM doesn't nearly have the +MAttack (Magic Attack) to play a full time BLM, but they can nuke very nicely on there own.
Overal: RDM requires a lot of work to play incredibly well. If you play incredibly well, you'll get invites very quickly. Not to say RDMs don't get invites very fast to begin with, but a good reputation as a RDM will get you in many places. All spells obtained!
Homam Gear: 2/5
