Subjob is entirely situational. You must weigh your exp party setup, mob you'll be fighting, area you'll be fighting, etc. Rdm has the advantage of having a few different subjobs to choose from to make the most of your exp party. That's why it is such a versatile job!
So basically you need the knowledge and experience to be able to choose what will work best for each situation. In the lower levels, you just don't have that. So /whm and /blm are the only subs you should worry about. Keep it simple and choose /whm for parties where you will be doing most of the healing and /blm for parties where they need you to nuke. Easy to understand and remember. Once you get more time into the job, you'll be able to see the intricacies of the job and be able to choose the right sub based on more factors than that.
