So, I learned a long time ago that it is possible for a rdm to fit two well-timed nukes in the MB window after a skill chain. I didn't really toy with it much between being too low level to be worth while, being main healer, learning to manage refresh and convert, antica, etc.
Then at 49 I get this party vs crawlers: nin sam mnk smn blm me. They decide to use Kagero > Raging Fists: Fusion, which the other mages had a good MB for but I didn't. Since it was the easiest party setup I'd gotten in probably 20 levels, I decided to play around with Fire Dia double MB. It did pugil scales for damage, of course, but it worked and I was tremendously satisfied to use my newfound ability—sortof like doing my first MBs in Elshimo.
So ever since then I've been trying to hone my technique using nukes that do practical amounts of damage. It is HARD. This is my macro for Distortion MBs:
/equip main "Ice Staff"
/equip hands "Garrison Gloves"
/equip neck "Black Neckerchief"
/ma "Water II" <t>
/wait 6
/ma Blizzard <t>
If I hit this right as I see the animation for the closing WS start, it will work most of the time under optimal lag conditions. Depending on my connection, I may get "unable to cast spells at this time," so I usually have my magic menu open to Blizzard and spam my Enter key after I see Water II land so I know Blizzard will cast ASAFP. Even then I don't always get the 2nd MB. I'm not sure what exactly I'm doing wrong with my timing.
Fire II/Fire for Fusion is even harder. In addition to the trouble with the Distortion MB, the cast time for Fire II is just long enough that I have to start casting it a moment before the monk uses Raging Fists if I want it to end right when the Fusion animation ends. This is a problem if the monk isn't terribly consistent with when he closes the chain, since if I jump the gun by too much, my nuke will land in the middle of the animation and miss the window. I've only gotten both MBs on this once.
So I'm a little discouraged. Whenever I do it, it's a tremendous personal victory (I always give my party a chuckle whooping about it), but the rate at which I can pull it off is nowhere near consistent. Does anyone do this often that could offer some tips on timing or technique? Should I scale back to using Water II/Water and Fire II/Dia II for now? My friend who told me about this said he was using Thunder II/Aeroga on Frags and doing comparable damage to the BLM's nuke (Aero III or Thundaga II, I can't remember). I realize I have some Fast Cast improvements coming up at 55 and 60, but unless that extra trait and AF hat have a very significant impact, I don't see how I'd be able to pull off my friend's example.
