There's some interesting discussion regarding this on Killing Ifrit. Couple of people not understanding that just because something is 'assumed' that it is 'fact'. I'm done trying to explain the point to deaf ears.

Awesome job, guys. Cool stuff to know. I think Ka1'e1 already said it, but it does seem weird that its consistently .3% on every other item but earth/terra staff. Almost as if it were intentional. I could understand SE choosing to just round it up, but why make it not a whole percentage to begin with?

And, Im sure you've already learned this, but take anything said by most ppl on KI with a grain of salt. I think for most of them, posting on KI is all their parents will let them do un-chaperoned on the internet.

So, basically physical damage equipment aren't as great as they seem to be? I've always been told Cactuar's 1000 needle attack does exactly 1000 damage. No matter what equipment you wear, or what buffs you have on. But according to Icemage's post, the rumor is false.

I've also tried soloing a cactuar sometime ago, before beating Maat. And it used the attack on me. I didn't have any damage reducing equipment. But apparently buffs like Stoneskin and Phalanx work too. With 950-ish HP at 70RDM/11WAR, I took only 800-840-ish damage. And it wasn't even a fresh stoneskin cast either. Worn out over time as the cactuar hit me.

Here is a small question, how many times was this done? It should be done over serveral fights, and then take the average .

Yes, an average would be useful, and perhaps could be done. With the one small exception that other experiences show damage is always 1000/# of people in AoE.

Any amount of tests will come back with the exact same #'s. Perhaps a difference of 1 dmg or *gasp* 2! But it won't change the average.

If you just have 2 people, that will always be 500 dmg. I've been away from the game a long time, and am getting ready to come back. Could the day/time/moon phase, have anything to dmg?

Na Killa, dont you worry. Icemage is the premiere Red Mage Scientist (hey! someone give Icemage that title- Red Mage Scientist) and is very extensive in testing. Any variables would be accounted for and noted. My head is still hurting around that stuff he did on Magic Defense =X

Most of the data points were collected with 1-2 tests. The results are entirely consistent. This is not the first time Jehryn and I have tested with 1000 Needles, and I am confident that the damage numbers are completely consistent; it really does try to deal exactly 1000 damage every single time.

My curiosity though would be about the gears themselves. It's quite odd that Earth Staff would reduce correctly but the others do not, program wise that would of had to be intentional. So the curiosity is was any attention payed to what day it was when each testing was done? A theory I've been kind of poking at is that given the right day or effect the effectiveness of gear can change.

Like for example with Earth Staff, has it been tested on Windsday, Earthsday, Thundersday, and then any other? The theory kind of being that since the item is aligned to Earth it's description is true on Earthsday. So on like Windsday it'll take -0.5% hit and on Thundersday gain a 0.5% boost or more and any other day probably end up with the -0.3%.

I wonder about this also because of the Cheviot Cape effects and the Earth Staff, when you calculate (k) 20 + 9.4 + 4.7 = 34.1 then (100 - 34.1)/100 = 0.659 so then 500 * 0.659 = 329.5 (330) you don't hit this number if Earth Staff takes the same hit and drops to something like 19.7. Not to mention Cheviot Cape gets that +13 Dark and coincidentally at night time gains an extra 4.7.

Seems like it's very close to find a truth, it would be intresting to get more info on this. If the Earth Staff gaining this true 20% can be debunked would help out a lot on this. Otherwise it looks like a possible factor not thought of is being played.
