    Re: RDM Advice Needed!!

    Regarding using whm sub: http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/sho...327#post473327

I used whm as my sub as I planned up until level 34. From 10-23 I feel it is definately the superior choice. I did a lot of my early leveling in the Maze of Shakhrami hunting worms, so naturally having Barstonra in the party was a must. In the Dunes, a 12rdm/6whm can make a party possible if no white mage is available, since Poisona is such a must against lizards, but the whm sub really shines at 14 when rdm gets Cure II naturally and the sub gives Protectra. From this point forward a rdm/whm can fully replace a whm against most exp mobs. The first exceptions you'll find are Damselflies and Gobs. These guys have nasty AoE attacks that seriously extend your downtime without the convenience of Divine Seal+Curaga. If you're unlucky enough to see 3 or more Cursed Sphere or Bomb Toss in the same fight ... rdm has no tools to ensure the safety of everyone else in the party in that unfortunate situation.

In the mid-20s things get less clear cut. Level 24 presents the first real reason you might want to start subbing blm: Drain. Drain is a pretty MP efficient damage spell with the added benefit of healing you for the amount of damage it does and raising your probably neglected dark magic skill. Especially at later levels this is an immensely powerful soloing tool, so you might as well start training it now.

At 25 all the white mages around you will get Raise, which will drop your desirability as a main healer considerably, but you can still work as one quite effectively as long as you don't let anyone die. You weren't going to do that anyway, right? Protectra is as good as it gets right now and Barwatera will occasionally dull the death-dealing capacity of the dreaded Screwdriver. Since you're still probably fighting on the front lines at this point, there's no reason you can't save the whm the trouble of running up and casting those spells.

At 27 a full-fledged whm will get Protectra II, while only Protect II will be available to you. This is really just enough of a disadvantage to be a nuisance. If your party has 2 members that regularly get hate, it's still easy enough to keep them Protected but it'll cost you twice as much MP and a little more attention. If your party isn't that good at controlling hate and more people regularly get hit, well ... sucks for you.

26-33 in Elshimo presents few new choices. At 32 you will finally gain the ability to do DS+Curaga, just after whms get Curaga II. Generally the former is still adequate and the latter is a waste of MP at this point. Goblin Smithy are another exception to rdms being just as good main healers as whms, since whms will have Barfira in addition to DS+Curaga, and you won't get either until you're about ready to leave the jungle.

From 34 on I used blm sub almost exclusively. Why? Warp. This spell is just too convenient. Against beetles, which will likely be over half of your leveling fodder for at least the next 20 levels, the status curing, group healing, and element shielding abilities that whm sub affords are useless, so go with your personal preference. Nowadays there are alternatives to subbing blm for Warp, but why pay 1k per charge of a Warp Cudgel when you can get it for free without impairing your party?

Frost at 44 is worth noting. If you're subbing blm and don't have a blm in your party (or don't have one that knows to use it), it'll be your job to keep this on the mob. Frost does slip damage and lowers agility, meaning the mob will dodge less and your pt members will hit more consistently. Better accuracy means better damage and also faster tp, which translates into more skillchains and more opportunities to MB for you. Of the elemental debuffs, this is widely regarded as the most useful in terms of boosting party effectiveness.

    Some exceptions:

If you get a rare party that fights Gazers in Eldieme, bring whm sub. Three reasons. 1) It's vitally important to keep these mobs Silenced at all times. The extra bit of MND you get from /whm will help that some. 2) Inevitably Silence will get resisted at a bad time at least once, and something nasty like Thundaga will sneak through. When that happens, DS+Curaga is a chain saver. 3) About 50% of the time, they will use the WS Hex Eye. This inflicts extremely strong paralysis. It's very hard for a tank to maintain hate when thier vokes and Cures keep getting interrupted by para, so heal it asap.

Crawler poison is a terrible annoyance. If nobody else in your pt has whm sub, bring it for Poisona. CN is a short walk from Jeuno anyway.

When you get up to fighting Antica, use whm sub. Like the Gazers, these guys need to be kept Silenced and have nasty AoE. Their WSes are even worse than the Gazers' because they do nasty AoE damage AND a nasty status effect (Blind or Silence).

    ---

I've only gotten to level 48rdm, so this is as far as I can advise based on experience. Based on my time as blm and whm, I'd say the utility of Aspir and Escape will probably keep me using /blm in the majority of experience parties, though I could see switching to /whm against certain mobs for Cursna, Erase, and other status cures.

IMO, /WHM is the better sub until 40+ anyway. Other subs can be good if you have 'em, but nobody ever complained to me about my WHM sub at those levels (or, well, ever).

It's definitely true that we get picked second to WHMs and all, but if they aren't around it can be a short wait for us too =P If you get a good reputation too, that helps. I had repeat invites even to 2RDM parties because I was /WHM and people had partied with me as healer before. "there was no WHM, but I told them you were just as good", that sort of thing.

Thing is, low levels can really fly by in good parties anyway.

        Re: RDM Advice Needed!!

RDMs still get PT invites quite frequently. Who wouldn't want someone who can add extra damage with nukes WHILE being able to throw in any needed heals? Not a 2nd BLM, someone who can pull hate and get themselves killed. (Yeah, you'd think a 2nd nuker would speed things up, but it just increases the chance of stealing hate, and unbalancing hate, from the tank. Thus leaving the WHM on a manaburn mode, and the tank throwing every skill in their arsenal to reattain hate status.)

At least with a RDM, you have more control with the PT. WHM focuses on healing, RDM will do the debuffing and keep a watchful eye for SCs or needed heals. BLMs pull enough hate quickly already with just 1 in the party. Especially around the dunes area.

At least thats what I think^^

Kind of read it late, but, Jei, ur reply did summarize precisely the rdm's roles and reasons for party-invite. A good recap for me along the path as well ^^ .

Was wondering if some other Red Mages have problems getting partys? Also what kinda things do Red Mages do in partys? I know they do abit of everything. Also can I keep my WHM sub or do I need to change it later?
            Any advice would be great.

            Thanks everyone
well as a rdm the only times i had a difficult time getting a party was 37-40....
basically "should we get a 37 or 38 rdm?" (Raise is 38) Guess on answer (same goes for 24 vs 25 whm)
38 vs 39 all depends on pt set-up if you're lowest or highest.
39 vs 40 again the question "should we get a 39 or 40 rdm?"
40 vs 41 ^ look at sentence above.

I would often log on and get a /tell before I even turn on my pt flag. thfs have a hard time getting invites before 15 but rdm? until post 50 (even then) I often have to sort out my /tells and I am an Elvaan Red Mage with an underleveled subjob. people who tell you finding a party is difficult is just jealous. because because of you, you can keep a party from disbanding after the whm d/c'es. infact i was main healer till Garlaige Citadel ~33-35... that was the first time i was able to use elemental spells since I got my first pt in dunes.

enfeble... paralyze, slow, poison, blind (till flash), gravity.. Dia on armored opponents and bio on less armored but heavy hitting opponents
cure, cure II etc and nuke

the strat guide tells you to choose between melee and magic, however the mage route suites rdm more in later levels.
are you not going to cast magic except for dire circumstances? then why be a mage?
or will you cast knowing you'll have to rest negating your TPs? accepting you are a mage?

I'll say this one, if i'm leveling another job and the rdm isnt enfebeling, i'll kick them after a fair enough warning. if you ever get a pt w/ a whm blm and you as rdm, there is no excuse if the blm has to cast blind or the whm slow. you can do both, better. sure you can't do both at the same time, but if the whm has to forgo a cure II to paralyze or slow because you won't or the blm has to cast blind instead of the killing nuke because you want to do all your fights without using 1 MP, then you should change jobs to warrior. you chose the job, if you do it well people will like you and you may be able to pt w/ the same group over and over. if you think of rdm as war w/ a mp resivor(sp?) that you never use, do everyone a favor and do war for xp parties.

I will admit when I started rdm it was because I wanted to solo. sword, nuke & cure we've got it all and if you sub thf, then you are a D&D bard! or something like it anyways. but i've learned (heh liked) to have the pallie or warrior take the hits and i'm an important member of the team. I can't nuke like a blm, but if i wanted to, i'll play blm. I can't cure and -ra like a whm can, but if i wanted to i'd play whm. same goes for the warrior. and as we get higher up we get less like war and closer to the mages. however we still have our enfeble niche and by then we have refresh. I didn't want my sword to go, but it's ok, I'm a Mage.

whm- subbed is ok. excellent if your going to be main healer and no whm looking, it's better than rdm/smn but my whm is still way under leveled.

blm- subbed though "cookie cutter" and "preferred" and some other words I won't mention and I went the longest time refusing to level blm for that reason, but i have found some uses... 1.) Warp. extremely useful utility spell. 2.) Aspir. I have yet to level blm over my smn21 so I can't vouch for its utility but rdms need mps, that'll give a bit more. 3.) Drain. well if you're farming drain might have a use for you. I havent needed it but who knows, maybe one day.
people have said elemental seal actually affects sleep... i dont know but it's blm15
conserve mp, sounds useful too. don't know what level it's at. plan on getting blm out of dunes when invites slow down and i get my AF

            Take care and good luck.

EDIT: Taskmage's post is helpful too... must be a different experience having a full sub... but rdm's just too fun to level subjobs.

                Re: RDM Advice Needed!!

Check the dunes for ep mobs.

BCNM is burning circle notorious monster. Your usually lvl capped in these battles though there are some uncapped ones. So bcnm 20 is lvl cap 20 and so on. It also means how many beastmen seals you need to trade to get the orb to do it. When you fight in a bcnm its a special area. If you have done the mission dragon fight, it is similar to that.

                  Re: RDM Advice Needed!!

i did that, so the mission is more like an example so u can see how it all comes together.. now how do you know if u can solo it or if u need a party or even an alliance? if u know the Lvl of BCNM u can figure it out i guess.. from what i see, if its lvl 70 NM u need alliance of lvl 70 cuz of the killer attacks they have,, and if a BCNM 60 drops a item that is for a lvl 60 i here like a ring u can sell if for lots of gil some 2 million i here.. I guess it cost alot for high lvl armor if somone will pay 2 mil for a ring.. am i rite... how will u know if there is a lvl cap or not all BCNM have caps? and juts the NMs pop at random and no cap correct... and NMs pop anywhere not in burning circle.. seems that BCNM are mission type things and quests while NMs are just for items and quests and farming.. do i have the itedea

The only time I had trouble finding a party as a RDM was at the early fifties. You shouldn't worry about it too much.

Honestly, now is when I'm having problems finding parties. I went from Lv.42 to Lv.46 in one night, then I went one night where I couldn't get a party to save my soul. Then I got a good party that just started way too late. I was on the vurge of hitting Lv.48 and everybody was just too tired to continue. I was less than 2k EXP from {Cure}IV and {Haste}. I also had my Mage pants (INT+3 MND+3), and a new shield to toss in. I'm getting excited to level, and it seemd every other night a RDM's services just aren't required.
