In the early levels you are free to meele as you please. When I say early levels I mean from 1 to 30, but depending on your PT you should know when you can meele and when you should be healing your PT.
Your role in the PT is to keep downtime to a minimum. You achieve this thru enfeebles and enhance magic.
Some early macros you should have at heart are
Slow
/ma "Slow" <t>
Paralyze
/ma "Paralyze" <t>
Blind
/ma "Blind" <t>
Dia
/ma "Dia" <t>
Note: You can also use the command <bt> so you automatically cast the spell upon the Party's Target, but sometimes this get's really bad when your Party has more then one target targetted. You can choose as you see fit.
Cure
/ma "Cure" <p1>
Cure
/ma "Cure" <p2>
Cure
/ma "Cure" <p3>
Cure
/ma "Cure" <p4>
Cure
/ma "Cure" <p5>
Cure
/ma "Cure" <me>
or you could just do a
Cure
/ma "Cure" <st>
*Which allows you to select the players thru the use of the tab key
You should also learn to access some of your magic manually, that way you don't have to kill yourself thru switching tons of macro palets, but this becomes inevitable as you level up.
When you solo, you will want to use a Sword, go buy one if you have to.
Also, you will want to solo from 1 to 10. From 10 you can start to PT. If you want to level up fast, eat food. Some food that helps is Meat Mithakakbobs (more attack) and Selbina Milk (for HP regen so you don't have to rest so much). Dont' worry about equipment too much. At the lower levels it isn't that essential that you have top of the line everything, rather this is the time for you to start develop the skills needed to survive in Vana'diel. Also another thing you want to do is to always keep a Signet on yourself, that way you gain Crystals when you fight mobs which can sell in the Auction House so you can develop more gil as you level up for all your food ,equipment, and spell needs.
Keep in mind the Bar-<whatever> spells are not that essential to buy at your level, but you will need them at higher levels. These are just spells that you can hold off on.
Essential Spells at the lower levels:
Cure
Dia
Bio
Paralyze
Slow
Blind
Bind
Cure 2
Graivty
Aquaveil
Stoneskin
Blink
En-spells (Just choose one, you really don't need all of them and they aren't really THAT essential, but it's some extra damage when you meele which can really add up)
Do not forget to do quests as it is a easy way to gain some early gil in the levels. It is also a great way for you to get familiar with your starting city.
As far as Subjobs, you have 18 levels to go thru before you have to worry about that, but if you want a head start idea......well for elvaans we mostly go with BLM Subjob because Elvaans naturally have low MP and we also need the INT from BLM. A RDM needs a good amount of both MND and INT, and since Elvaans have naturally good MND we use BLM for the boost in INT. Another thing is that BLM helps us with our short MP supply with Job Traits like Conserve MP and spells like Aspir. Also there are those convient spells like Warp, Escape, Shock, Frost, Rasp...etc. However, it never hurts to have more then one Subjob avaliable. So if you can level up a WHM and BLM subjob.
BTW, since you are starting out and if your one of those respectful, courteous, nice and friendly players, then perhaps I can get you a worldpass to my server. I could give you some pointers as you level up your RDM.

Also, thru the Main Menu>Config, go to Chat Filters and check off Party and Tells. This way when theres battle spam you can still read what you party members wrote or what someone sent you in a /tell, it will 'hold' them at the top of the chat. You can hold any text, but its good to start off with Party and Tells.
..:::Communication:::..
/Say or /s <yourtexthere> goes out till the eye can see (?)./Say or /s <yourtexthere> goes out till the eye can see (?).
/shout or /sh <your text here> goes through the majority of that area (longer distance than /say).
/linkshell or /ls <yourtexthere> talks to your current linkshell members no matter where they might be (if you have one).
/party or /pt <youtexthere> talks to you current party members no matter where they might be.
/tell or /t <name> <you text goes here> tells the person you want to talk to, like an IM (Instant Message) (i.e, /t Tipsy your the best!)
Thats all of them! You might want to look thru the config for Misc.(I think) and change the Damage to OnScreen and Off (both) this way you dont have to hurt your eyes bye\looking thru the Chat Log to see the Damage you've done. it will apear on the monster head (under its name). Best of luck!
