So I joined this party today, and immediately knew it wasn't going to be the best ever due to the setup; pld/war, thf/nin, mnk/war, rdm/blm, whm/smn, and myself, rdm/blm.
Well whatever, I needed some exp, had spent a bit lfg, so I figured I'd give it a shot. Off we go to Boyahda to kill some crabs. Along the way there was no discussion of the skillchain, but I figured since I joined the party when it was full they might've already knocked that out. We get to camp, everyone buffs up, and me and the rdm work out who casts what. After a few pulls I noticed that the 3 melee were just randomly using their WSs. Immediately disturbed by this, I asked "why aren't you doing a skillchain?". To that the thf responds "We have no BLM, no need for a renkei.". Wow. Two level 55 RDM/BLM in the party, and no need for a skillchain at all.
Now personally, I own an ice staff (+10 elemental skill), and a wizard's earring (+5 elemental with blm sub), and moldavite earring (+5 magic attack). I'm equipped to currently match or surpass a lesser equipped black mage at my same level using equal nukes. Hell the night before I had played with a BLM that was also using an ice staff, and my damage was 10 less than his (359 vs. 369 my dmg vs. his) on Blizzard II magic bursts. However, somehow in this thf's mind (he was the party leader), he had decided that for the good of our group and our exp, we needed no skillchain, even though he was using the usual SATA Viper Bite, the PLD was using Red Lotus Blade, and the MNK using Raging Fists, and those magically chain together for two RDM both getting two bursts in each with Fire and Fire II. Honestly it amazed me at their total lack of coordination as 90% of the time the PLD would use Red Lotus at almost the exact same time as the thf's Viper, and the MNK would mindlessly spam Raging Fists every time he hit 100% which also never seemed to coincide with the PLD's Red Lotus.
Needless to say, kills were slow, downtime was inevitable even with the entire back line sporting dark staves, and two red mages converting, and we were barely a 1k/hr exp party. Honestly I should've disbanded in Jeuno when I saw the group had a second RDM, but my better judgement had left me for the time being, and the thought of my new Lv56 equipment (Warlock's tights, Shaman's cloak) was enough to make me try anything. I eventually typed /logout instead of just sitting to rest as opposed to just being a total jackass to the group by insulting them with "This exp blows, later losers", and I had other things to do anyway.
Moral of the story? Get out while you can, and don't be afraid to just say "this party setup won't work". I wasted around 2 and a half hours of my time for about 3.5k exp, when all I had to do was politely leave when I first saw the crappy setup, or when we initially started and the exp was awful. Next time I won't be afraid to step on a toe or piss someone off to save myself a total waste of time.
Oh, and since when couldn't a RDM magic burst for nice damage anyway??? Even with crappy gear and a whm sub RDM can still pack a decent punch on a MB (worth the MP anyway) if it isn't resisted. I even recently had a party where the whm/blm was using elemental seal + waterga on distortion for about 150dmg at times on helm beetles in CN. Some people's ignorance just amazes me.
