in HNM's...it's so random that it's really hard to tell. I've been present for a total of 4 venomous claw drops from Serket and Genbu (I'm sure we've had more), 2 we had at least one thf, 2 we had no thf (other than /thf). Also, when the static I was in began to get paper off liches, we managed to find a lv60something thf that was willing to help us. We were there for ~3 hours, no drops of any kind. 1.5 hours was without thf, 1.5 hours was with. Thf leaves...we decide to kill one more lich. He drops the paper.

Other times, we'll be doing something with a thf...like clearing the place holders for the mob in Sea Serpent Grotto that drops Collossal Lance...and one of them drops Raise II. But then again, clearing diamond quads with a pld and a rdm, we got a scroll of raise II as well...

To be honest, I'll do what you're told to do to increase your chances until it gets silly, and just hope for the best. Too much shit in FFXI seems to be utterly random with no discernable order...but I figure it can never hurt o.O

Last night a PLD and a RDM helped me get paper. First Lich, Ancient Papyryus... I almost jumped out of my chair.. (although I did have THF sub  ) so this proves nothing

Well, my experience has been that TH/TH2 help rare/ex drops. Subjob quest items, carbuncle ruby, keys for RSE, all dropped much more often when thieves were present. My last exp party in Crawlers Nest had a 45+ thf and we got so many Nest chest keys we started losing them because everyone already had one. I've had the same experience with scorpion stingers (also rare/ex) when my LS did RSE in Shakhrami, again with a TH2 thief. I think we got 10-12 patterns in 8 hours - partly because we know the chest locations well, but partly because we got keys pretty easily with a TH2 thief.

Sometime I'm going to try a rigorous statistical test - kill 100 of the same monster (that has a rare/ex drop) with BLM sub recording all the drops (and discarding the rare/ex one immediately so it can drop again), warp, come back and kill 100 more with THF sub and record the drops again. (For the third part - TH vs TH2 - I'd have to have a thf of the same level do the same thing and record their drops, which may be more difficult.) Maybe I'll do Bull Dhalmels - they have pretty decent normal drops (to sell) and a rare/ex drop I won't mind throwing away, and there's usually nobody hunting them on Carbuncle so I won't bother anyone too much or have excessive competition.

This thread is hijacked, I'm partly response doh, at least I gave some farming advice before doing it. Just to note, yeterday, I helped someone get ruby in bub. ! leech nothing, 2nd leech ruby, 3rd leech ruby, 67% moon, *shurg*

As far as crawlers nest, In 3-4k xp, We got 4 keys I think.

Anyway since I'm posting again I might as well add something useful to rdm farming from observations.

Rdm/blm after you get -ga spells, make decent size trains with those nice rdm buffs on, and you get regen, refresh etc, melee and -ga as needed. You won't ahve to rest for mp either I'd assume, so use a weapon with AOE when you get the tp and skill lvl. Sword has a 150 AOE, daggar a 125 one, that I remember.

RDM has it easier than other jobs for avoiding downtime for almost everything they do especially post 41, once you have refresh and convert(although when solo I'd convert earlier if I was rdm since I'd have hate). For example, lets say you take 30thf for 30 rdm and pit them against copper, old, brass quadav(21-23 in pal) or some crawlers in bub. I'd have to take downtime
every 1-2 mobs, wm sub helps a little. A rdm however could do more before resting, that would be your strength to play off I suppose. A rdm+thf combo also makes a viable duo for team farming on harder mobs.
ANYWAY BIG BEN THINK LIKE THIS ITS LIKE HEY GUYS WHY BE RACIST?? RACISM HURTS EVERYBODY ON INSIDE MAKE BIG BEN SADFACE ITS ALL ABOUT SKILLS CUZ WHEN BIG BEN HAD TO WORK ON FARM AS CHILD BEN HAD TO MAKE FARMING PT MADE OF ASIAN MAN BLACK MAN(THATS ME) MEXICAN MAN CHECHOSLOVAKIAN MAN AND IT WAS BEST FARMING PT EVER CAUSE ALL MEN HAD HQ SHOVELS AND TRACTORS AND KNOW HOW TO PLAY SO FARMING WAS QUITE GOOD

RDM definitely benefits from team farming with a damage dealer. You don't really need a tank on easy prey or below - rdm can easily keep up with their damage output - but it often takes a while to kill monsters that are easy prey or close to it by yourself.

And, of course, a thief with TH2 is always good.

              OK. Just my 2 cents.

Treasure hunter makes ALOT of difference. not just a little. I have been getting ALOT more drops with THF sub. Usualy enemies don't drop anything anymore. But now, I kill a few mobs and I am running out of space to carry the drops.

I am not regreting getting THF to lvl 15.

However, I do notice this: there are no drops when someone that does not have Treasure Hunter kills "deafeats" the mobs. The killing blow must be made by the THF or /THF in order for Treasure Hunter to work.

Also Weapon Skills have the same dilema. Something you kill with a WS will not get you the effect of Treasure Hunter.

I am not a mage, but I would suspect the same applies to killing mobs with spells.

So for me, I just make sure that the finishing blow is made from a normal strike, nothing else.

I agree except when I went for coffer key in Castle Oztroja, I ate the Lucky Egg (TH2) and used a weapon skill for last hit and it dropped my key. We had no THFs and it was 4 hrs later that another key dropped. Last night, key hunt in Gusgen, I got last hit with a weapon skill on fly and it dropped key. 2 mobs later, I got last hit and it dropped 2nd key and we were thru.

Yeah I think the last hit thing with THF is viable, as it using a weapon skill last hit sub THF. You were talking about skill chains I think and I have no exp. on that subject.

It's easy to develop superstitions about drop rates. That's why I suggested a statistical test (which I haven't done yet :p ).

I was in a papyrus party yesterday that got 4 papyrus in 6 hours, including travel time (we went to the beaucedine side, which I highly recommend - more liches, less adds). We had one TH2 and one TH1. Most papyrus parties I have heard of are lucky to get one per 2 hours. But then there's no way of telling how much was just good random numbers and how much was the TH abilities without much more extensive testing.

I don't think TH1 or 2 affect rare drop rates...they only increase the number of items you'd get anyways, therefore giving rares more possible slots to pop in. So it helps rares but indirectly. On the other hand we went to take some ppl on rank ups/ZMs with THF that has TH3 dagger and uh, drops were silly. 4+ drops from every mob, testimonies and coffer keys left and right. It was sexy. ^^x

TH1 does not affect rare drop rate.
TH2 does not affect rare/ex drop rate.
The myth that the THF needs to have the killing blow is false.

In terms of farming, there is a significant advantage for people with a THF sub at lvl15. It only takes about 6 hours to get THF to 15, and the amount of time saved farming makes up for it by far. The only times I've not used THF sub is when I was farming rams at lower levels (used /RNG) or very low level linking mobs, which I used /BLM for (for AOE spells and personal entertainment... I think /THF would have had at least the same item/time ratio).
                      There will be cake.

The quickest way I found to make gil is to farm tigers in Jugner forest and Batilla Downs. You can get 2100gil per three fangs for the repeatable "fang Finder" quest in San'doria. That's 8400gil a stack. I can usually get at the very least a stack and a half in an hour with my THF sub. There are a couple of good camps for tigers in Jugner and in Batilla you should just run around cause they're all over. If you sub RNG you can use Widescan (My Fav ability of any job) which will help increase your kill rate, but you may get less drops.

The hides that they drop usually sell ok at the AH. They are part of another quest in Sandy. I just sell them to an NPC though so they won't take up room in my AH spaces.
